Feb 1 Update - 2009 Recruit Listing
johnnyzip84 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
I'm afraid to imagine what HIS hands look like. :blink:If we got this guy and he actually played I would be really impressed. My guess is his hands would make the Tonganator's dukes look like they belonged on Shirley Temple and that is saying something cause we all know the Tonganator has M.H. Can you imagine BOTH of these guys playing as down linemen? They'd have to set up a good 2-3 yards ahead of the line of scrimmage for every play, otherwise their HANDS would be IMMEDIATELY offsides as they enterred a 3-point stance -
I could be going out on a limb, but I don't think the Cap'n will have Ball St at #3 in HIS rankings

National Signing Day Viewing Party?
johnnyzip84 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Excellent idea, Cap'n! I am partial to OBC and they have a large area in one corner where bands are able to set up. I think this would work fine for something like this. I usually head there on Tuesday evening, and I could ask around there tomorrow (even though it doesn't meet your noon tomorrow deadline) if it would help. -
Feb 1 Update - 2009 Recruit Listing

Thanks for the update, Cap'n Your diligence is much appreciated. With all of the movement that is typical during the latter stages of recruiting, this type of an up-dated summary really comes in handy. Speaking of handy.....err hands........perhaps you should note that Phil Tonga has these --> -
This is now a little off-topic, but something is definitely wrong with midwest football. Our teams are slow and boring to watch. The Big 11 is even more painful to watch than the MAC, IMHO.Even though I am partially an OSU fan, I WILL agree to that. Considering the amount of talent that comes out of this area, youd think the entire conference would be better, but either a. the talent is being recruited out of this region to the the South and West, or B. the talent is being recruited locally, but the systems they are playing in flat-out don't work.It should be noted, however, that the OSU/Texas bowl game this year was a very close game throughout, even though everyone figured Texas would just entirely dismantle OSU. Considering that Texas was the other team that really had a legit chance to go to the national championship last year, had they not been snubbed out of the Big12 championship, I would say OSU held their own against a far superior team, unlike Penn State... Alas, this isnt relevant, so I will shut up now. But yes, I would much rather watch a MAC game than a Big10 game.I think there is a third possibility; let's call it "c" for consistency. Perhaps Ohio and much of the Midwest, while still a "decent" region for prospects, isn't the "hotbed" it once was. It's a simple case of demographics IMHO.

This is one of your better ideas. Which of their teams do you recommend we bring in? SIU participates in NCAA Division II competing in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Tigers field teams in basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, water polo, swimming, golf, and tennis. People might pay good money to watch us take on their water polo team.On a related topic, why does almost everyone other than Akron have their 2009 OOC schedule locked up, but we don't?Perhaps the Faustian 35-0 defeat in the '86 opener lead to the demise of the gridiron Tigers?Well, then, let's go with your water polo idea. I mean how tough can it be to take a few Socceroos, and diver or two, the Tonganator and stick Zeke in the middle (he can probably touch on his tippy-toes) and have, say track Coach Mitchell mold them into a top-notch D-2 water polo team? We can fill the Info with water like the Romans used to do in the Coliseum.Regarding your legitimate question, maybe the Kentucky game snafu has something to do with that?

Penn State Opener Official

I recall Lavell Bailey catching a thrilling (yet totally meaningless) TD very late in the game in which he took a viscious hit over the middle, yet managed to spin away and keep his balance to take it the distance. -

I realize the 81-0 score was an exaggeration. I see now that Clark is getting an extra year of eligibility. That will make it tough. -
And 6'3" Russell Holmes holding his own against 6'11" Roy Tarpley! Not that I took a day off of work at Goodyear Aerospace to watch the game or anything

Maybe we could get Salem U? After all they dropped the alliance with Teikyo U of Japan. Besides, QB Jimbo Fischer has long since used up his eligibility!Wiki SalemWiki Jimbo

Skip, I think the poster is mistaking Akron for Toledo, who DID whip PSU mightily 24-6 (and the stats were just as bad) IN happy valley during the 2000 season.I'm sure Toledo had non-qualifers on their team!I miss "Chuck the Chest"! -

I happened to read some of the comments on the article. One of the posters gives me a humorous reminder of my Western PA youth, while another is obviously confusing us with Toledo, when Pinkel's squad embarrassed JoePa 23-6 a few years back. -
I'm not too surprised. He seemed like the weakest verbal (outside of a Mr. Robinson) on the list.

I know he started off cold in his 1st few games, but it was just a matter of time until the Nitro Net Nuker exploded on the scene. In his post-game inteview last night, Roberts seemed to agree with Dunn when they discussed the merits of having a 4 guard rotation. Of course, I'm sure every one of them wants plenty of PT.

I hear what you're saying, Cap'n. But there sure is a fine line between "swagger" and "overconfidence". I guess it boils down to whether we trust KD to accurately read his players in this respect. Perhaps the busy schedule is actually a positive in terms of guarding against a let-down. Tonight's game, I believe, will provide the bellwether. If we take care of UT in a methodical fashion, comparable to the YSU game, then I predict a minimum 5 wins against the West this year. If we either eke out a close win or manage to lose, a 3-3 repeat becomes more likely.

I checked to see if the College Basketball Invitational was still going this year, and it looks like it is (see Link) with 16 teams once again.CBI BracketNow as far as these additional tourneys further assisting BCS conference teams, I'm not so sure about that. The CBI's selection criterion is somewhat nebulous, but the CIT's stated criteria (below) would seem to favor mid-Majors.Eligible Teams: Participating teams must finish the regular season with a winning record against division I opponents. Teams whose conferences have less than fifty-percent (50%) of their teams participating in the NCAA and NIT tournaments will be given higher priority for selection into the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.

If I had done a complete copy and paste, it would have been too vulgar Oh yes... very much so. Even without the vulgarities, its still ridiculously hilarious. That's a big affirmative!

Very nice analysis, timmyboy My only minor comment is that I wouldn't exactly call CJ7's season at Morgan State in 2008 "very good". It was only fair in my estimation (see link). BTW, while checking for his stats, I stumbled upon the website shown in the link. That's one pretty nice research tool for sports stats of ALL kinds! Everyone should try it out. It has plenty of individual Zip stats for football and basketball, both current and past. There are various sorting and graphing techniques available as well. It's extremely comprehensive. For instance, a few clicks told me that Humpty, despite his trials along the learning curve of MAC hoops, still has a higher FG percentage (40.5) than Jimmal Ball's career 40.0 mark. Unfortunately turnovers are not included.Link

Recruiting Florida
johnnyzip84 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Interesting stuff, Cap'n. I am curious as to how these numbers would compare to other recruiting "hot spots" around the country. -
Was the 1st thing that occured to me at the final whistle I say you're on a roll ZM. Why not stick with the "Zips by 14" prediction until it proves you wrong.I congratulate you on your keen insight at the conclusion of today's contest johnyzip, but a lot goes into my predictions. What follows is the process I have been using this year. Step 1: Calculate the combined W/L record differential of Zips and opponents. For example, say the Zips are 10-2 and the opponent is 8-7. The combined W/L record differential is 7. That is 10-2 = 8 and 8-7 =1, and, therefore, 8 – 1 = 7. (Do not simply combine the two teams wins and losses. To illustrate (10+8) – (2+7) = 9, not the correct 7. Step 2: Take the combined W/L differential (e.g., 7) from Step 1 and add (or subtract if the combined W/L record differential is negative) from the most recent Zip’s Sagarin rating (and add 2 more if it is a Saturday game). Step 3: Using 4 for a senior, 3 for a junior, 2 for a sophomore and 1 for a freshman, calculate the starting lineup experience differential. Step 4: Divide the Adjusted Zip’s Sagarin rating from Step 2 by the starting lineup experience differential from Step 3. Step 5: Calculate the starting lineup height differential . Step 6: Finally, the game score differential is calculated by first dividing the experience adjusted, adjusted Zip’s Sagarin rating from Step 4 by the starting lineup height differential from Step 5, then multiply the resulting value by zero and add 14.Classic! I love it!!! Go Zips!!!

Was the 1st thing that occured to me at the final whistle I say you're on a roll ZM. Why not stick with the "Zips by 14" prediction until it proves you wrong.I can't help but think that maybe Can't's uncanny knack of selecting good coaching successors has finally run dry. Geno was a tough, gritty player, but I'm not sold on his coaching ability. His game decisions and substitutions weren't so bad, but this team plays less like a "team" than any Can't State squad I've watched in at least 10 years. Here's hoping this continues.Brett's contributions were obvious, but Chris made a couple of shots that were BIG-time in key moments. It looks like his ribs are finally not an issue. I just LOVE watching Nik bust his butt up and down the floor. The play in which he shadowed Fisher (I think) from one end to the other until he (Fisher) ended up charging into another Zip was a perfect example of the energy this guy brings. KD's going to have his hands full doling out minutes over the remainder of the season. It should be fun watching the younger guys continue to develop.

Quick Recruiting Update

I just realized that losing Jermaine Robinson back to the Rockettes means we'll probably be shut out on the Post Gazette Fabulous 22 this year
