  1. I'm sure I would qualify as an "old man" to a number of posters here, but age is such a subjective thing, don't you agree skip-zip? After all, I was in one of the card sections that were discussed a few weeks back. Like a lot of us, I've seen Dennison, Faust, Owens, and JD. I don't mention this to validate my thoughts or opinions, just to give you a frame of reference.Back to the issue, I think we just have to look at the games BG and Miami have played thus far this season. Yes, it is still early (we con't know how good or bad Minnesota is) but it looks like both have "righted the ship" and since we play both on the road this year, our MAC schedule is looking to be more daunting than at the beginning of the year.I will add one thing. It seems like VanDelay's and such sights tend to give the benefit of the doubt to the tradition-rich MAC programs like Miami and BG. Maybe I'm just a paranoid Zip fan, but this is what I see.
  2. Tyler Sheehan has obviously made a huge difference at BG. I think, with the lack of depth we are all aware of in the MAC, this CAN lend itself to big swings in win-loss records from year to year. Both BG and Miami had a lot of injuries last year. Historically, though, they are among the best in the conference.
  3. Yahoo has the line at -13, which is pretty close to what I expected (2TD). This could be a difficult game, emotionally, for the Zips.
  4. These power rankings are pretty interesting. I think teams like Toledo and Western are probably a little better than what this list is saying. We often make too much out of the 1st few games, particularly when they're against stiff opposition. The conference games will sift out the contenders. Having said that, it does appear like the MAC East is the stronger of the two divisions and that it'll be a dogfight at the top all year. People use the phrase "keep your head in the game" quite often. I think the team in the East that does the best job of "keeping its head in the SEASON" will come out on top. I foresee many close contests and much shuffling of the divisional order before a champ is crowned. Quite frankly, it should be very exciting with certainly 5 teams capable of winning it (Zips, Flushes, BG, Miami, OU). Even Buffalo looks to be improved (that road game up there looks tougher after this past week). So I hope we can keep the D playing hard (could keep us in every game) while the O can somehow get a little traction.
  5. This will be a tall order. I figure we'll be at least 14 point underdogs, but if the D can play like they did this past week we should make a game of it at least. I hope JD takes a little more of a "go for broke" mentality with this game. I'd rather take some some chances and get burned every now and then as opposed to playing it safe. I think we need to be aggressive in games like this to give us our best shot at winning.
  6. I have to agree that this was probably his last shot in Cleveland. I've tried to withhold judgement on him, because it takes time with NFL QB's and he wasn't getting much help the last 2 years, but I didn't see anything today that provided much hope for a future for Charlle in Cleveland, or perhaps anywhere else as a starter. He's a good guy and I hope he sticks it out enough to hang around the NFL for as long as he wants.
  7. Classic, Dr. Z!!! I'll go something like,Us 27Them 23 For details, please refer to my post on The Big Question thread
  8. I agree with you 100% on this. In fact, I might even go so far to say that I almost respect him for that Just kidding....I have long thought that he is a pretty good college announcer.
  9. Zippy dee doo dah....Zippy dee aaa!! Lee always was a Renegade (ridiculously obscure reference to his being the one and only coach of the USFL's Orlando......hence the Disney theme......Renegades).
  10. NICE!!! How about EX-BUCKEYE Kennedy.......
  11. I'm not sure that I'd characterize anything short of a MAC title as a lack of success. Winning the East division, in and of itself, would be an accomplishment, particulary after seeing last week's results. Going, say 8-4 with a bowl bid would be a success in my book, even if we don't win Saturday.
  12. I, for one, do not think that if we were to win Saturday that it would necessarily mean wins over IU and UConn. College football can be hard to figure from week to week, so I'd be careful about those kind of assumptions. That being said, I believe a win on Sat would MORE THAN LIKELY mean a bowl game even if we come up short in the MAC. And, once again, I'd take that trade-off (as opposed to losing Saturday and winning the MAC).
  13. A win over the Red and Silver for sure!! I want Ryno to get the $46 from his boss
  14. The first game that comes to mind is an old AFC championship, where the Bengals beat the Chargers (who had just come off of that crazy marathon win over the Dolphins with KII's daddy having to be carried off the field from exhaustion). It's hard not to think that the negative temperatures had no affect on the outcome of that one. The Chargers were probably the better team. If the game had been in San Diego, the Bolts would have been a big favorite.
  15. I'm SO envious!!! Where can the REST of us get those odds?????? Come on Zips!!! Appy St. is probably pulling for you!!
  16. Probably the same way all of us forgot about it (at least temporarily)......Getsy to Hixon!!
  17. I think we'll be OK against the run this year, but aren't you forgetting the obvious Captain? In the MAC championship, Wolfe went crazy for well over 200
  18. The Columbus Dispatch has a nice write-up on Chris Kemme and other central Ohio locals who play for the Zips. I didn't realize how light he was as a HS Senior. Nice job in recruiting Zips!Link
  19. I generally agree with this, from the standpoint of the difficulty posed when trying to gain good footing while playing defense on a sloppy field. However, the wet conditions COULD lead to more fumbles and if Akron just happens to create a few more than they give up, this could be a potential equalizer.BTW Ryno, I'm sure some others noticed, but the Zips did not beat NC State and lose to Army in the same season. I'm not sure if that what you meant, but I wanted to clarify. Your point is still valid, though. The Zips do seem to follow that trend. If I have to pick, I will say we beat UConn. I'll skip the other part (picking a team that shouldn't beat us to beat us), because I want us to be
  20. OK, here goes. On 4th down from the 19, we line up in the “spread” punt formation. Tressel calls a timeout because his players are laughing too much to focus. After the timeout, the Zippers assume the same formation. The laughter returns, but it’s primarily from the Red and Silver (please do NOT correct me on this, thank you!) fans this time, as Flaherty suddenly snaps the ball to CJ, who has snuck in the lineup as an up back. Meanwhile, Stec darts to his left then pivots 180 degrees and heads to the right flat. The rest of the team follows CJ who is slowly fading to the left side of the backfield. Just as the silver helmeted dudes are closing in (close enough, in fact, so that CJ can view the Appy St. undergarments on each of his pursuers) he heaves the ball with the trajectory of a mortar in the direction of the lonely Stec. John stumbles and bumbles for what seems like the last 10 seconds of the Zip-Redhawk basketball nightmare until the balls somehow lands between his left bicep and his helmet. He’s at the 10 yard line when it looks as though 3 Red and Silver dudes are about to hand the punting chores over to Hildreth for the rest of the season when all of a sudden, in a blaze of Blue and Gold glory, there comes none other than old #40 flying to the rescue. Laube simultaneously clocks the 3 Red and Silver dudes all the way to the Island of Misfit Toys as Stec waltzes into the end zone, untouched!!! Zips win by 4!!! Zips win by 4!!!
  21. Thanks for ther info, BB, I'll definitely tune in while getting ready for work. We all know that Zippy !!!!!
  22. Actually (although I hate to give THEM any props), equins would be somewhat justified in saying that Appy St. is the next YSU (not the other way around). Your tone seems to indicate that my punting concerns are either totally unjustified or that they are a knee-jerk reaction to one freak play. This is something that has been brewing for all of last season. I certainly hope JD does correct things. I'd like nothing better than to say that I've been overreacting.
  23. There's a silly temptation on my part to mention another FCS school from North Carolina at this moment, but I know it would be silly of me to compare Gardner-Webb to the two-time defending national champs. However, I wouldn't merely discount what OU was able to do on special teams simply based on the fact that (perhaps) you have never heard of Gardner-Webb. My original point was simply this. We've had some difficulty getting punts off, and OU apparently has a knack for blocking them. I hope nothing comes of it when we meet them, but I'm not exactly reassured in this just because Gardner-Webb is not a household word in NE Ohio.BTW, from recent history, G-W looks to be an average FCS squad. They were 6-5 in 2006 (including a 41-6 loss to Appy St.) and 5-6 in 2005,
  24. We NEED to watch this guy when the Bobcats come to town!!!!
  25. Ahhh, the suspense is killing me! Maybe JD has a few trick plays up his sleeves based on this alignment? Or are we simply paranoid about the big return (albeit for good reason)? I might be in the minority, but I actually think Stec has the potential to be a very good punter. Last year, as someone here pointed out, it seemed like he was positioned a few yards too close to the line of scrimmage. The block last week just looked like a breakdown in protection to me.
