I agree. Player safety should be paramount, Zeke's 7 foot frame was approaching a 45 degree angle with the hardwood. If he let's go of the rim when (apparently) the refs wanted him to he would have abruptly fallen and hit his head on the same hardwood. He was in no way trying to "show up" NDSU. -

That assumes the defense doesn't try to take away the most likely 3 point threats. One of the potential advantages of having Jonas out there in this type of situation, along with the other 3 point threats (Reggie, Chauncey, Jake, Alex), is that the opponent is likely to not consider him as much of a threat. It was just a wild thought, so no need to take it too seriously. Hopefully you're correct that this is purely hypothetical. Something tells me the game will be more of a nailbiter. It seems like NDSU has adjusted a little bit better lately to not having Braun. We'll find out soon enough. -
This is a good discussion, since Suel was such an important part of last year's offense. The Toledo finale depth chart gives an idea of where Zip WRs were primarily used on the field. I could be wrong, but I believe the X and Z positions are outside and the H and Y positions are inside. Suel did much of his damage over the middle, so it makes sense that he played the Y. I think the H term goes back to the fullback/TE hybrid used in the NFL, so it also makes sens that this is an inside position. What's interesting to me is that there doesn't seem to be a consistent set of desired characteristics for an inside or and outside receiver. LT Smith is supposed to be as fast as any current WR and he's playing outside. Dillard used his size to have a breakout year from an outside position despite his lack of speed. Sconiers playing outside is a little bit of a mystery. A look at the inside receivers shows they are either small, quick guys who are threats for YAC (Davis, Frieson, Williams) or physical, athletic types like Suel and D'Orazio who can do a little bit of everything. It's hard to say where Traylor-Bennett and Wolf fit into this array. They're both big and fast from early accounts. Their size points to an outside position, but if one of them shows the ability to make the big catch in traffic they will probably end up playing inside. This may seem like an insignificant discussion to some, but if TB thinks it necessary to have different position coaches for inside and outside receivers, I'd say there must be a big enough distinction between what he wants to see from each of these groups.

I'll admit he hasn't been able to recreate the magic of his "miracle versus Pine-Bluff", where his shooting percentage from 2PT, 3PT and the free throw line were all 100%. But his overall 3PT shooting stats , in limited time of course, is still a loftly 50%. Now I'm not necessarily advocating that he grab more time. His defense and rebounding are highly suspect. BUT, if you need to simply hit one 3 pointer I'm not sure he wouldn't be in my top 3 or 4 choices from the Zips' current roster. -
I second that! :thumb: It's one of my favorite sports related, non-fiction books of all. My brother went to WVU in the 70's and he used to talk about seeing all of those old Southern Conference championship trophies. Pat's account of the road games at WVU, ECU, VMI etc brought some of that home to me. It's hard to imagine WVU being affiliated with the Southern Conference these days.

Zac Jackson writes a nice piece that thoroughly summarizes KD's coaching career. A lot of this is review, but there are some new details in there as well. I've been enjoying Zac's coverage of the Zips on FSO. -
Thanks for the heads up, good Doctor I'll check the one in Jackson when I'm over there.

First, I agree that McAdams should start tonight. The only concern with Reggie (and Jake) is that they have both had periods of forcing the issue on 3's. And this leads me to a crazy idea I thought about (way too much) last night. Is there a scenario, say down by 2 or 3 with only a few seconds left, where Jonas comes off the bench to provide another option from behind the arc (particularly if Walsh's replacements have been struggling with their shot)? -
Been enjoying these lately, thanks to the Zipgrad01 tip

I catch it every now and then and he's pretty entertaining and funny in his role. He's forged a fairly nice career for himself.

Well I hope Deji plays the game of his life then. If there's one thing I can ask, please let's limit the telegraphed passes. Go Zips!!

I'm a big fan of Chauncey's game, but I'm not sure I want him overdoing it at this point. If he feels good, I don't mind him playing more minutes Friday but I'd rather KD spread Walsh's minutes between Chauncey and Reggie until I know Chauncey is near 100%. Get better, Brian. This is a bummer, but the team should be able to overcome until you're back.

I don't know what you're talking about, MDZip I couldn't let the 'Meister's little anecdote go by without comment!

Now I didn't arrive in Akron until 1979, so I'm always intrigued by stories converning the Zips squads from the '60s. So what you're telling us is Coach Laterza was a huge proponent of taking it hard to the hole?

When asked a direct question from an out-of-town caller on the Big Time Sports show this afternoon on 1350 am, Joe Dunn said that the latest news HE had heard (and it was within the last week) is that they are reconsidering a JAR facelift which would improve the overall layout but only raise capacity by a couple hundred. Maybe they feel they should strike while the iron (and team) is hot to bide themselves a little time to work on funding for a long term solution?

At Large Consideration

I haven't been able to follow ZnO as much lately, so forgive me if this point has been made already. Does the fact that this guy chairs the NCAA selection committee help or hinder the Zips chances? -
I wonder if this guy is on our radar?

In a completely unrelated event, I watched the coach's show tonight with KD and Joe Dunn Joe gets bashed a bit on here, but I'll stand by the guy. Hey at least he knows how to correctly pronounce Brian Walsh's home town of Coraopolis, PA, something the JAR announcer botches EVERY game I also listened to Zips Live and KD had a pretty funny retort to a question that was purportedly tweeted from Romeo Travis. It went something like this:   -
Chauncey Was Out - Now Back, and Kicking @ss

Quite frankly, even if it means risking that the streak end prematurely, I really hope they give Chauncey as much of a realistic shot to contribute as close to 100% as possible. As exciting as these last few weeks have been, the best excitement still awaits. -

Bump. Here is an article from the Trib-Review that discusses how KD is pleased he stayed at UA. Having grown up in western PA, I think it's great to see the Zips getting some more publicity in a region, that I know first hand, has long pretty much ignored UA and its athletic programs. -
I thought Frenchy said during the post-game that this senior class had joined the last several in reaching the NINETY win threshold for their UA careers. Since the Zips are one of 8 teams across the country to have won at least 20 games 8 seasons in a row, 90 makes more sense than 70.

That's what makes this time of year somewhat exciting. Neither one of us know what's going to happen, but we can each have different opinions without anyone being wrong. I'll clarify what I mean by "fine". Last year, the Zips averaged 427.2 yards/game and 25.1 points/game on offense. Now those figures were zomewhat skewed by the Morgan St game (753 yards and 66 points), so I don't expect the same averages with no FCS pushover on the 2013 schedule. Still, I will predict the Zips average at least 400 yards/game and 25 points/game on offense in 2013. We can come back to this thread in December to see how this compares to reality.
-
I think we should pretty much assume that Crawford and Calhoun (sounds a little like a law firm) will NOT shoot the ball as horribly as they did in the 1st game. They'll be as dangerous as the Zips allow them to be. Of course the 'Cuse 2-3 zone is their bread and butter, but I expect them to pack it inside even a little more taking a cue from the most recent UA opponents. I expect Alex to bounce back.
-
That figure was based on "campus residence halls" according to the article. That probably refers to UA administered residence halls. If you include places like 22 Exchange and other private rentals, the number of students actually living on or near campus might be double that figure (just a guess)?

I only have a few tweaks to your proposed defensive depth chart, B&G (and I have no problem with you focusing on the defense, because I think we all know that is the key - the Bowden/Milwee offense lead by KP16 will do just fine). I think CSU Ram transfer CJ James will start at DE, considering JT Turner is still somewhat of a question mark (would like to have an update on his status, since he was suspended for the season closer at the Glass Bowl). Also, I believe you mean to have Rossi (not Rizzo, the O-linemen who has graduated) with the LBs. Let's also not forget Horner and Isaiah Williams along the D-line. Horner just needs to get bigger. He made some plays for a true FR last year.
