2013 Football Golf Outing Summer Jamboree
johnnyzip84 replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Football
I received the same card and mine was smeared a little also. But, here is what I can decipher: Zips Football Summer Jamboree Golf Outing presented by LeafFilter - June 10 at Medina CC Zips Baseball Diamond Legends Classic - July 22 at Medina CC Zips Men's Basketball Summer Classic Golf Outing presented by FirstEnergy - August 19 at The Quarry GC The Invitational presented by FirstEnergy Solutions, to benefit Zips Men's and Women's Golf Programs - October 1 at Firestone CC I have had early June vacation plans for some time and I was worried they would conflict with the football outing, but no worries as I don't leave for vacation until June 11 -
Do they have an unfair recruiting advantage?

....which begs the question: Is Florida's "Golf Coast" on the Gulf Coast or on the Atlantic Coast? When I think about what FGCU has done so far in this tourney, I can't help but to contrast the ROI they have enjoyed versus their in-state brethren, Florida Atlantic and Florida International. I know UA is too far down the road to turn away from football (I wouldn't want them to from my selfish perspective anyway), but FGCU is getting a huge payback for much less of an investment than either FAU or FIU has over the last decade or so. Kudos to the FGC administration.

Zips Football "Recruiting"Camps

Nice to see them address a problem area Thanks for the link. -
You may want to revisit the original post to which Dr Z was responding. In it akzipper said the following:

Maybe that's why that word come to mind

WINNING Sure, we didn't win 'em all and we came up short in 2 NCAA tourney games. But we also won our only 2 MAC regular seasons ever and we won 2 out of 4 MAC Tourney championship games, both of them pulling away in the end (and the 2 losses were in OT and by 1 point). Under Zeke, the Zips simply won more games in a 4 year period than ever before at the D-1 level. His distractors will point to his less than dominant scoring average, but Zeke didn't put up huge scoring numbers at McKeesport, so this really shouldn't have been a huge surprise. He did manage to pick up his rebounding and scoring by his senior year enough make a difference on that end of the floor as well. UA has he best program in the MAC right now and much of this is because of Zeke. Best of luck to you, big guy!

Since we're going off on a baseball tangent, I was born on July 6, 1961. Growing up in Pittsburgh, my dad was a HUGE Pirates fan. Bill Mazeroski hit his famous World Series winning home run against the Yankees on October 13, 1960. You're a lawyer, so you can deduce the rest of the story

It's interesting that D-Baller said that the Rams don't play half court defense when up by 40 because they're no good at it. But when they're down by 25 I see them playing half court defense. What gives????

Interesting. There is someone near NYC who listen's to 1350 am on iHeart radio. He is a Yankees fan (knew you liked the G-Men). I obviously made a bad assumption

Good points, az71. It's a proven cliche that guards win games at this time of the year. If we could land ONE point guard who is talented enough to control tempo, distribute and provide a scoring threat (like Cooper at OU, Huffman at K.E.N.T., Boykins at EMU, etc) the Zips could very well take that "next step". Until then, we're not likely to see much more than playing for MAC championships regardless of how awesome Tree is (and he is!). ps. I think I may have heard you talk to Joe Dunn a few times this season on 1350 am. Was that you?

After a day or so of reflection, here are a few of my thoughts on several recurring themes in this thread: KD'S CEILING - I believe KD has steadily improved the Zips in his time here. But I also believe the MAC, to a large degree, limits just how far he can take this program. And I don't think leaving the MAC is the answer, because of football. It looks like there might be some high MAC level talent coming in next year, but I don't think it's realistic to expect Akron to quickly bring in a team similar to what it faced Thursday. I am more than happy with KD as coach, even if he may have hit his "MAC ceiling". SHAKA - I'm not usually an "old school" type, but if you're willing to accept running it up in any sport I believe you should also expect to see the other team fight back at times in any way they can. What do you think a John Chaney team would have done being down by 40 with the opponent still pressing and shooting 3's? In my opinion, it would have been perfectly justified if Tree or Zeke had thrown a good elbow into one of the Ram cutters to send a message at that point. And yes, that's not just playing a "big boy" game, it's playing a man's game. THE GAME - It's amazing how much better an overall experience Chicago was than Auburn Hills. The score, the time of day, the attendance were all disappontments to me. But NEVER did I question the decision to go there to support my team. Despite the outcome, they did more than enough to deserve my full support this season. The game itself was, just as some have noted, the (im)perfect storm. The prognosticators were spot on about this being a terrible matchup. VCU clearly knew who our shooters were and they blanketed them the entire night.

Thanks I ended up in the Residence Inn at Auburn Hills/Troy. Hopefully we can take over a watering hole after a victory!

Nice Article on Walk-On Darius Hoisten
johnnyzip84 replied to Blue & Gold's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
You have to appreciate the efforts of people like Darius. I like the way he enjoys being from Akron and being supported by folks from Akron. Thanks for posting, B&G! -
Thanks for the info, RZ! I might try to get a little closer to the Palace if I can.

Thought of a few more at work today. Maybe this could be a start on next year's marketing campaign (not to get ahead of myself......still LOTS to do THIS year) Akron Basketball is - Tree-nacious, Tree-silient and Tree-mendous!
-
First I got a call that I didn't get them, but then I got another call that I did (was going one way or another anyways). So JZ84 and DZ84 are headed up after work on Thursday and staying somewhere in the area. Are people staying right around Auburn Hills? I used to travel to Detroit fairly often and I have a few favorite spots closer to the city.

MAC Championship - Behind the Scenes Documentary
johnnyzip84 replied to ZipsBrad's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I watched last night and there are quite a few recognizable faces on there. The footage in the locker room afterward was priceless. Nice job! -
Even though Pat's minutes have been sparse lately, I wonder if we'll see the Twin Tower set at all to try to force a few mismatches. He'll have to be strong with the ball of course.

Been trying to think of a catchy phrase for the Zips play of late to couple with VCU's reputation. How about this? Havoc vs Tree-nacity?
-
Most of us know you lived there previously Dave, but I don't believe most UM fans care one way or another about the Ohio MAC schools. The majority will simply look at an upset as a way to avoid a perceived bigger hurdle in VCU.
-
I'm sure glad games aren't won on paper. It's true that dealing with"havoc" will be a challenge, but it's not like the Zips don't present some matchup difficulties as well. I like the idea of using Zeke on the inbounds and having him make diagonal outlet passes off of it. I also believe we can win the rebounding by a nice margin if the effort is the same as we've seen lately. Tree is a tough opponent for anyone. I think it'll come down to 3-point shooting and FT shooting. We're showing signs of turning it around with the former (have a feeling that both Chauncey and Walsh will be effective) and hopefully things will improve with the latter. Also it's not hard to imagine the Michigan crowd pulling for the Zips in this one. Keep it close and the several thousand Zip fans will be joined by 2 or 3 times as many Maize and Blue. This could get REALLY loud. I can't wait to be there. Go Zips!!!!!
