Transfer DL from Florida State
johnnyzip84 replied to Blue & Gold's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Some "Warchant" discussion on Moses' coming to Akron. -
I post this video for several reasons: 1) The Zips have had a somewhat frustrating season (especially in conference), but they're starting to get it going down the stretch. 2) I love to beat Pitt at anything. 3) Beyond the "pitch", how often to we get to hear "and the Zips defeat the #17 ranked......." 4) Y'inz don't get to hear the Pittsburgh accent enough around here n'at. Just jaggin'

There is some discussion about halfway down this EA story in the PD. Potential good news: might be able to close the gap with the football-less WAC (how did they get a $4 million dollar deal, anyway?). Potential bad news: more pressure to play weeknight football games
-
Kyle needs to be pushed and the Zips need a viable backup in case he gets hurt. I don't think anyone is saying this guy is the next coming. Besides, DW13 couldn't even crack the lineup for FCS Stepen F Austin, right?
-
Absolutely. I think KP16 will be a very good QB, but he certainly needed to have some competetion. This is exactly what the Dr ordered. May the best QB win. I wonder if Zips Win! had anything to do with this?

2013 Zips in the MLS, NASL, USLPro Thread
johnnyzip84 replied to Crew8's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
In perhaps his most meaningful minutes as a pro, Evan Bush keeps a clean sheet as the Montreal Impact blasts Toronto FC 6-0 in the 2nd leg of their Canadian Championship matchup, with the Impact winning 6-2 on aggregate. I am especially happy for Evan, as he also played in the 2-0 TFC victory in the 1st leg. The Impact are starting off this season in unbelievable form. -
That's encouraging fo Zeke. It sure seems to me that a minimum 2nd round selection is looking more and more likely. An interesting side note to me is that Munroe Falls native and former OU Bobcat letter winner (football AND basketball) Chet Feldman is Zeke's trainer as he prepares for his professional hoops career.

The PD's EA wraps up the spring game (and another one from those rivals to the east....just ignore). Joe Dunn shoots and scores! Welcome, Mosee McCray! Somewhere, Zips Win! is smiling I agree Stay healthy, KP16!

I'm really happy for Dalton but from a selfish standpoint I'll miss him helping out the Zip QBs this year. I'll be rooting for him to stick, that's for sure. If things don't work out with Dallas, the CFL seems perfectly fitted to DW13's game. The longer and wider field plays right into his strength, which is getting the ball to a spot on the field on time an on target. Like Zips Win! mentioned already, Dalton had no trouble displaying his appreciation towards the UA football program. I hope he has a long professional career and stops back in Akron every time he gets a chance. Congrats, Dalton!

Having seen a few practices this spring, I really wasn't surprised by much of anything I saw yesterday. My previous comments on the LBs speed, back-up QB problems, O-Line depth, etc made the outcome an easliy predicable low-scoring affair. Between TB's comments in the video and in GT's column, there are two very interesting and telling tidbits: 1) In the video, TB mentions 2 O-Linemen who will join the team in the fall with D-1 experience. I was one of the one who thinks Pughs is a key player to the success of this season. KP16 is probably the most important, but Pughs is right behind him and they really go hand in hand. 2) In GT's column, TB makes a public acknowledgment that he would love to have a 5th year (graduate) Sr QB transfer in and give KP16 some competition. Easton has decent accuracy (which is why I think he was playing ahead of Franco who looked a bit wild to me in various scrimmages), but has a weak arm, doesn't move well and makes erratic decisions. Franco's ability to move was about all I saw to have any hopes that he might contribute. I hope he fully recovers from the injury and considers a transfer to a lower division. Unless a 5th year transfer emerges, I think the back-up QB job is Tommy Woodson's to lose. Here are a couple other random observations from yesterday: A - I was disapponted at first that they didn't allow KP16 to run from the pocket much, as this has been something he has shown an ability to do in limited action last season and during the spring. But it became obvious that the staff (rightfully so) did NOT want him taking any unnecessary risks of injury in a meaningless contest. Good call. B - The offensive timing is still shaky. Even some of the handoffs were not performed with confidence. Some of this is attributable to the O-Line's injuries/depth, but I think KP16 and the RBs/WRs need more work in this area. It's a long way from the quick hitting, fast paced offense we saw early in 2012. I think they can still approach that style in 2013, but a few players (new or existing) will have to step it up. C - I liked seeing the use of the TEs a little more, punctuated by Ritossa's TD catch. Suel wa so dominant over the middle that it might take a comination of D'Orazio and the TEs to approach his contributions. D - The arrival of WRs Traylor-Bennett and Wolf in the fall is important. WR is a spot where a talented player should be able to contribute early. I believe it's going to be largely up to them to stretch the field. E - Zach Paul's kickoffs were encouraging, as they were mostly high and deep. I thought he had a much stronger leg than Stein until I saw Robert nail those 50+ yarders! I've long liked the way Stein's kicks get "up" quickly. Now he has added some length as well. I believe with the wealth of speedy LBs, special teams will be much improved in 2013. Skolmuch did fine as the long snapper yesterday, even adequately mimicking Adam Steiner's memorable quick jaunt downfield in coverage after the snap. F - Like gozips19 says, Lot 9 will be a blast yet again this year. Keener's bacon-cheeseburgers with pulled pork were outragious. Zipgrad01's lobster tails posing as shrimp were world class. I'll hold off on any season predictions for now, because so much hinges on players who are not yet with the team. But I think there are reasons to be encouraged.

MAC player Eric Fisher drafted #1 overall

Good for Eric! I wonder how well he recalls Ianello going for two? -
New QB commit - decommit from Arizona?
johnnyzip84 replied to KentZip's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Completely unrelated to his own actions, Tommy Woodson suffered a bullet wound while on a 7v7 travelling squad back last year. Thankfully, he's OK with no apparent long-term effects. Maybe this is partly why Arizona pulled their offer? If so, it sure looks like a knee jerk reaction in retrospect. Looking forward to seeing Tommy in August. He just might end up as the back-up QB for 2013. -
Zips offer QB Jason Driskel, the younger brother of UF QB Jeff Driskel. It's his first offer.

GT's take on practice #10.

After a couple hours of tailgating in Lot 9, TW might be in store for some interesting questions

Kevin Mills should be back from injury as well, so these three can help with depth. But I wouldn't want to count on effective playing time out of any of them (2 of them true FR and the other 1 new to college football as well) just yet.

Unquestionably, the defense dominated today. Here are a few additional observations: 1) After seemingly hurting his ankle again last Saturday, Pughsley sat out this scrimmage. The O-Line REALLY suffers without him. Cedric B (the big JUCO transfer) looks to be taking a while to adjust as he worked with the 2's mostly. I am officialy concerned about the depth of the O-Line. I think this played a big part in today's results. One bright spot: I predict Isaiah Williams will eventually be an effective O-Linemen. 2) The linebackers continue to impress, especially March, Brown and Rachal (althought March looked to have dinged a shoulder early on and did not return). There are at least 6 LBs who can be effective, and that doesn't include CJ Mizell who will hopefully join the team in August. The added bonus of having plenty of capable LBs is that the special teams coverage should also improve. 3) Pohl could not find a rhythm today, but I think the O-Line trouble caused much of this. I think it's safe to say spectators at the 2013 spring game will not see the offensive explosion they saw last year. 4) The running game also struggled. 5) Most of the receivers are back in action, except for Sconiers. But some of them (Davis, Williams) might not be cleared for contact yet. For some reason, Dillard splits time between the 1's and 2's. I wonder if he's in someone's doghouse? 6) Paul Skolmutch got most of the reps at long-snapper. Christian Allen also was giving it a go in drills. This position is still a work in progress. 7) Grice and Caponi are ready to play RIGHT NOW. Hopefully, Hollis and others will come aboard to keep them fresh in the fall. Joe Dunn said on the Big Time Sports show this week, (paraphrasing) don't be surprised if SEVEN or EIGHT newcomers join the team this summer and make significant contributions in 2013.

Link So much for thinking UA's opening opponent, the Golden Knights, might not be fully motivated this season. I don't think it really makes much of a difference. If the Zips are able to pull off the upset, I think it will wind up having far more to do with UA simply being greatly improved in all phases than anything related to UCF's bowl/conference championship eligibility.
-
I believe I heard Joe Dunn say on 1350 am's Big Time Sports today that they are interviewing Hip during the show tomorrow. No word on whether Andrick will get his say as well.
-
I think a better question MIGHT be, why do any of the top recruits, the vast majority of whom know where they are going to college already, bother playing in a game like this? What, other than possibly jilting the school to which you're currently committed, is the motivation? What happens when a kid gets hurt in one of these games? Do schools pull scholarships in these situations? Perhaps I'm underestimating how much some of these kids want to represent their state versus another.

Another winner from GLBC This is a IPA with attitude.

The PD's EA has a few observations. If we can get CJ Mizell in here come August, I REALLY like the prospects of a LB corps headed by the likes of March, Rachal, Brown, Mizell, Rossi, Turner, etc. Of course, the depth along the D-line will have to materialize as well for the whole defense to turn the corner.
-
No I didn't and in fact I had the same question last week. He isn't on the roster either. Maybe he's enrolling in the fall? George Thomas, can you investigate?
