Despite technically losing money the OSU athletics program produces huge revenue for the area and the university and well as good will and publicity that pays off in many other ways. That can't be said of Zips sports.

The more we discuss the football program the more I look forward in anticipation to the (basketball) season.

I remember back when they did the ESPN deal that the MAC Commissioner touted how it gave the conference long term exposure and stability. They saw the money and the long term stability and never considered what being held hostage by ESPN over the long term was going to do on the campus and community level with things like mid-week football. They still think that some guy with no connection to a school involved is going to tune in on ESPN12 to watch an Eastern Michigan/Akron game on a Tuesday from their recliner in New Mexico, and they'll tout the game as "nationally televised." All the while, the sports fan in west Akron never turns on or attends the game as they have no connection to their hometown team.

I realize Bentley wasn't a huge contributor, but the reverse more often seems to occur, with a kid leaving his original school of choice to "go home" to a school near his place of origin. At the end of the day, I don't think it's a great talent loss but it's not a good look. As the preseason progresses I am becoming less and less enthusiastic about this squad. I need to figure out whether it it's my PTSD from the last two seasons or just the lack of anything positive news wise from the program. As I have said on here before, it is tough to get excited about the team when there's no indication of excitement from the team itself.

Not good when you lose hometown kids.

I wouldn't expect to get Florida State's starters. While this is not the Florida State football of old, as you suggest, the kid had to have some talent to get there. I am also pretty confident that the talent level of FSU's scout team is above that of the 1 win in two year Zips, so he should be an upgrade.

Maybe KD should get a Realist Coach to sit kids down and explain to them they're not likely to have a brand as their talent level has them at Duquesne.

The university has a law enforcement entity that can do background checks and people that can call around to get other info. I get that the executive recruiting companies do more than just search for candidates but there's nothing that they do that a salaried employee can't do (especially at a time of financial crisis as alleged by Miller himself). I suspect that the hiring of such a firm is more tied to the higher ups engaging in a CYA move than it does with anything else as it gives them somewhere else to point a finger if the hire blows up.

Wouldn't that be classic? Hire a recruiting firm to locate the guy you already knew from your time at UWGB.

I clicked on the link in the email and it went to a commercial for Ohio 529 plans then rolled into Gary Miller and his couple of minutes of basic introductory babble. I listened for a couple of minutes to Guthrie saying all of the SOS as every other one of these then gave up. I assume the two questions came from GT as he's usually the only one there.

I believe the Arena Football League has been defunct for a couple of years. There is now the Indoor Football League and some regional lesser leagues.. The IFL players average about $37K. Hopefully, Arth is improving and maintaining the graduation rates to help some of these kids get gainful employment. Indoor or arena football certainly are not the answer to a profitable future.

I'd say kids more often lack discipline, not guidance from coaches. Certainly, many of them lack guidance from a strong male parental figure in their youth and that contributes to a lack of discipline, but the coaches may actually be the first guidance they've ever really had. I'm not clear on your original statement. I'm not sure if you think coaches didn't give him the guidance to be successful or whether you think coaches weren't honest with the kid as to the level of his talent.
