What I have seen from 2 blowout games is very similar to last season. ONE exception I think. Finley seems to be an upgrade at QB. Even though he is playing behind a poor O line and a still suspect running game. I hope he doesn't get injured any more than he is. The defense is still getting gouged by teams that run right at them. NIU has them circled again. If Colgate has any kind of O line they are at least gonna try it. If Akron doesn't win by double digits this thing is worse than I thought. Forget South Carolina. Ohio is the real marker for this team. Lets cool it with the 'fire the coach' talk. Moorehead should get the rest of this season no matter what. Just like last season if there is no improvement in October/November then make your decision.

I guess any of us who for some reason picked Akron to beat NIU can cross off that one. NIU, thats a good football program. Has been.
-
I'm liking Finley. Makes decent decisions, so far. Throws a nice ball. If they can develop the O-line and a run game the offense can put up at least enough points to give the defense a chance. The D is getting gouged on the ground. Lets see how they finish. Avoid a blowout. Keep Finley healthy. No serious injuries. CUT THE STUPID PENALTIES!

Inhave a friend who kinda follows OSU. He said Akron Defense was better than expected. The Offense not so much. I only hope that the D doesn't get sobeat up that they are gassed for Colgate and OU. The O-line is still terrible. Moorehead better hope that Bullock is ready because against Rutgers and South Carolina Finley is gonna get beat up. If they can get at least 21 points out of the offense the defense can win a couple of games. Wanna see the Colgate and OU games. Gary Danielson said the OU game is the key game of the season for Akron.

Since the season is about to sart, I'll start psting some. I have been watching posts throught he summer. Some iteresting predictions on the board. First, its difficult to predict later season games until we see how badly physically beat up they are after the South Carolina game. OSU,Rutgers and SC are goung to physically pound them. OSU is going to show no mercy because Ryan Day is coaching for his job. South Carolina is going to be ugly. No chance against an improving Rutgers team. I wish the great minds in the AD's office would stop sacrificing football players for $$$. So who knows who will be standing on 9-14-24 and 9-28-24. With that said, too many other variables. Another new QB. Questionable O-line. Run game probably not as good. On defense, it will depend on who does or doesn't get injured. Healthy, it will be above average. I'm going 4-8 conservatively. I HOPE the wins are Colgate(but they are usually solid),BGSU,either EMU or Buffalo(not both) and hopefully KSU but not comfy witha one either. With an upset of one of OU, EMU or NIU might get to 5 at best. Just stop scheduling so many damn sacrifice games. I have no interest in watching the play OSU, Rutgers or SC. It not fair to the players. That said we will be at the home games with ear plugs in.😄

Apparently when he interviewed here before the AD didn't treat him too well.

As a season ticket holder from the Rubber Bowl on I never gave a rats behind about the scoreboard unless the music was too loud(and it certainly is now) or I couldn't find the score or the clock. I would much prefer to see a consistently decsent team on the field than worry about a scoreboard. Don't care who pays for it. OK the 'taxpayers' and students may not 'pay' for the scoreboard. But they ain't showing up to watch the scoreboard. They ain't showing up much at all. Lets hope the football on the field lives up to the expense of the new scoreboard.

Looks like his last football gig was at Colorado in 2012. Thats according to Wiki. Take it for what you think its worth. I just remember he brought in Brett(Bowling Ball) Biggs and they used him very effectively along with Getsy at QB. Getsy didn't run. JD also got Dennis Kennedy as a transfer I believe from Ohio State(fact check me). I also believe once they got Kennedy running north/south he had 1000 yards his senior year? Again, check me. With JD on the staff I think they have plenty of ability on the offensive coaching side. Got a feeling Moorehead wouldn't have brought JD in if he thought he was too out of touch with the game. Maybe, just maybe, Moorehead will use the running game more effectively than in the past. Gonna depend on who they decide is the QB.
-
I will be curious to see how much influence JD might have on this offense and the play calling.

Hope not. But, am afraid Zips might be in worse shape going into next season after all th portal dust settles.
-
Thanks. Hope he stays. Big loss if he doesn't.

Is Nunnally going to be a senior in2024? Or is he done. They have him listed as a Jr. right now.

Akron to play Ohio State to open the 2024 season

Akron, and other schools have been playing 'sacrifice' games for years and years. In Akron's case those big $$$ have not translated into sustained succes on the field or a rise in fan support.. So in the case of footballwhere has it gotten us? -

Careful,Y.town might make Akron regret scheduling them. They did make the FCS playoffs this season I believe. -

Again, I feel it is very difficult to analyze for next season until the dust settles over the winter. My concern is that there may be some key players who transfer out and potential recruits are going to hesitate coming here due to the condition of the program. Also, if Pittsburgh tries to go after Moorehead potential recruits are going to hesitate to come here if they think Moorehead might bail. I have no idea whether he will or not. Some key players are out of eligibility and some who played didn't exhibit the ability to play at this level. As far as the QB is concerned looks like Moorehead has for now made Bullock the front runner. We will see how that plays out. And, as others have pointed out, coaching on the offensive side of the ball left a lot to be desired all too often. Does that change? How? The defense as a group did an acceptable job generally with minimal support from the offense. Before this season even though I wasn't an Irons fan, I thought the program might get to 5-6 wins. Man that was way too optimistic. 2024 is either a turnaround or off the cliff season.

Akron to play Ohio State to open the 2024 season

I have had season tix since the early 90's. My wife and I go back and forth every year about renew or not. I renewd just to support the program. But, I think next season we will just buy GA's when we want to go. The athletic department lets non season ticket holders sit in our reserve section anyway. Bad way to run a railroad if you are in the college athletics business. And, cut the crap with the sacrifice games. They have been doing it for years with no appreciable positive results on the field. -

But what about the football program which has been bad for years? -

American Conference. Comparing Cincy's record given its competition to Akron's record given its competition is well, the old apples and oranges thing. When was the last time Akron beat Toledo? -

I have always wondered why a team like Toledo hasn't moved to a better conference. That program is consistently the best football program in the MAC. They could compete in a higher level conference once they got established. Personally, I hate the 'sacrifice' games for all the reasons people have already stated. Playing on TV against an Ohio State only reaffirms what people think about the Akron program. Its not any good. Thats bad pub. If the Akron athletic department can't field a football program that can consistently be competetive even in the MAC on and off the field then its time to get out of the business. I am tired of watching Akron start 1-3 or 0-4 every damn season. They can't win enough games in the MAC to even become bowl eligible much less win the MAC. Gonna be interesting to see what happens in the off season with player movement and coaching changes. -
Folks its just not meant to be! Don't feel bad Watson has a broken bone in his shoulder. Done for the season.

Didn't Charlie play because of an injury to a starter? Please refresh my memory. Still have to wonder if game planning/play calling had been adjusted in some games a couple of results might have been different. In any event, if Moorehead's preferred QB is not on the roster now will he be starting over next season with a QB who hasn't played in the system?
