Don't blame Finley. Moorehead allowed him to get beat up!! I said last week Moorehead should have considered not playing him or at least removed him from the game before he got beat up anymore. Agree, this team is beaten physically and mentally. I still refer to Gary Danielson's comment during the OSU game. The most important game on the schedule would be Ohio U. Now I am afraid there isn't enough gas in the tank to beat, not just compete against OU. Point the finger at Moorehead for getting Finley beat up. Without Finley Moorehead hasn't got the QB to run his offense. And, the way this defense is playing, its not gonna win them a game. If they surprise and win at Athens they can save the season. BUT...

None coming any time soon.

People in the Akron area showed more interest in Akron football when the program was a very good D2 program. Consistent winning,playoffs,Acme-Zip. Don't get me wrong not like they drew 20,000. But, attendance was good for that level. It seemed the ABJ payed more attention. They were competitive. Lost to Terry Bradshaw in the playoffs. Won 2 home playoff games at the Bowl. One was the first NCAA overtime playoff game as I recall. It was just more fun.

Week 4 - Zips vs. Gamecocks @ 7:30 pm EST

Only one goal against South Carolina. Keep Finley healthy! -
Have a little different take on that game. Haven't seen a QB make throws like Finley maybe since the Frye/Getsy era. The 56 yarder he threw to Golden, (I believe) was beautiful. He was getting beat up again because the O line still isn't much good at pass protection. Finley sometimes scrambles a little too quickly. But sometimes its self preservation. Moorehead's' lets kindly say strange play calling(I have a different word in mind) is contributing to Finley getting beat up. Moorehead better realize that if Finley goes down for any length of time his offense is toast. He has two quality RB's but won't use them consistently. Even Joe Dunn was wondering out loud why Akron wasn't running the ball more especially in the 2nd half. Wide receivers looked good for the most part. They have a QB who can get the ball to them. Defense was adequate against lesser competition. Still getting gouged on the ground too much. Colgate O line 'looked' bigger than Akron's defense. Db's looked good. Again, against lesser competition. Finally have a punter and kicker who can contribute. The lack of discipline on the field reared its ugly head again. Dumb, preventable penalties. I guess Moorehead isn't going to deal with it. New scoreboard was nice. Free T shirts nice. Granddaughter had a great time. I fear for Finley's health against S.Carolina. He is already hurting. If I'm the head coach as soon as it starts to get out of hand I sit Finley and some other starters and point to OU in Athens.

Watched a good bit of Toledo demolishing Miss. State. Akron and a number of other MAC programs can only dream of achieving at that level. Didn't realize Jason Candle had been there 10 years according to the announcers. Vince Kheres on the staff. Don't see that kind of success ever happening at Akron. The commitment to building a Toledo type operation has never existed here since Akron went to full D1. Sad.

What I have seen from 2 blowout games is very similar to last season. ONE exception I think. Finley seems to be an upgrade at QB. Even though he is playing behind a poor O line and a still suspect running game. I hope he doesn't get injured any more than he is. The defense is still getting gouged by teams that run right at them. NIU has them circled again. If Colgate has any kind of O line they are at least gonna try it. If Akron doesn't win by double digits this thing is worse than I thought. Forget South Carolina. Ohio is the real marker for this team. Lets cool it with the 'fire the coach' talk. Moorehead should get the rest of this season no matter what. Just like last season if there is no improvement in October/November then make your decision.
-
I guess any of us who for some reason picked Akron to beat NIU can cross off that one. NIU, thats a good football program. Has been.

I'm liking Finley. Makes decent decisions, so far. Throws a nice ball. If they can develop the O-line and a run game the offense can put up at least enough points to give the defense a chance. The D is getting gouged on the ground. Lets see how they finish. Avoid a blowout. Keep Finley healthy. No serious injuries. CUT THE STUPID PENALTIES!

Inhave a friend who kinda follows OSU. He said Akron Defense was better than expected. The Offense not so much. I only hope that the D doesn't get sobeat up that they are gassed for Colgate and OU. The O-line is still terrible. Moorehead better hope that Bullock is ready because against Rutgers and South Carolina Finley is gonna get beat up. If they can get at least 21 points out of the offense the defense can win a couple of games. Wanna see the Colgate and OU games. Gary Danielson said the OU game is the key game of the season for Akron.

Since the season is about to sart, I'll start psting some. I have been watching posts throught he summer. Some iteresting predictions on the board. First, its difficult to predict later season games until we see how badly physically beat up they are after the South Carolina game. OSU,Rutgers and SC are goung to physically pound them. OSU is going to show no mercy because Ryan Day is coaching for his job. South Carolina is going to be ugly. No chance against an improving Rutgers team. I wish the great minds in the AD's office would stop sacrificing football players for $$$. So who knows who will be standing on 9-14-24 and 9-28-24. With that said, too many other variables. Another new QB. Questionable O-line. Run game probably not as good. On defense, it will depend on who does or doesn't get injured. Healthy, it will be above average. I'm going 4-8 conservatively. I HOPE the wins are Colgate(but they are usually solid),BGSU,either EMU or Buffalo(not both) and hopefully KSU but not comfy witha one either. With an upset of one of OU, EMU or NIU might get to 5 at best. Just stop scheduling so many damn sacrifice games. I have no interest in watching the play OSU, Rutgers or SC. It not fair to the players. That said we will be at the home games with ear plugs in.😄

Apparently when he interviewed here before the AD didn't treat him too well.

As a season ticket holder from the Rubber Bowl on I never gave a rats behind about the scoreboard unless the music was too loud(and it certainly is now) or I couldn't find the score or the clock. I would much prefer to see a consistently decsent team on the field than worry about a scoreboard. Don't care who pays for it. OK the 'taxpayers' and students may not 'pay' for the scoreboard. But they ain't showing up to watch the scoreboard. They ain't showing up much at all. Lets hope the football on the field lives up to the expense of the new scoreboard.

Looks like his last football gig was at Colorado in 2012. Thats according to Wiki. Take it for what you think its worth. I just remember he brought in Brett(Bowling Ball) Biggs and they used him very effectively along with Getsy at QB. Getsy didn't run. JD also got Dennis Kennedy as a transfer I believe from Ohio State(fact check me). I also believe once they got Kennedy running north/south he had 1000 yards his senior year? Again, check me. With JD on the staff I think they have plenty of ability on the offensive coaching side. Got a feeling Moorehead wouldn't have brought JD in if he thought he was too out of touch with the game. Maybe, just maybe, Moorehead will use the running game more effectively than in the past. Gonna depend on who they decide is the QB.
-
I will be curious to see how much influence JD might have on this offense and the play calling.
-
Hope not. But, am afraid Zips might be in worse shape going into next season after all th portal dust settles.
-
Thanks. Hope he stays. Big loss if he doesn't.

Is Nunnally going to be a senior in2024? Or is he done. They have him listed as a Jr. right now.

Akron to play Ohio State to open the 2024 season
Lee Adams replied to LZIp's topic in Akron Zips Football
Akron, and other schools have been playing 'sacrifice' games for years and years. In Akron's case those big $$$ have not translated into sustained succes on the field or a rise in fan support.. So in the case of footballwhere has it gotten us?
