  1. y'all can keep asking questions to answer questions if you want...thats pointless...its obvious that conferences like the MAC,Sunbelt and some others of that ilg can not and could not play in the SEC,Big Ten,ACC,Big 12,PAC whatever they are now WEEK AFTER WEEK and YEAR after YEAR and win any games consistently for reasons that others have stated...those schools have far too many advantages and frankly i think its ridiculous that Ohio State gets away with playing several teams a year like Eastern Mich,Marshall,Akron etc patsies they are called just to pad its win total to have a shot at the BCS...OSU is not the only one obviously just the most familiar...maybe there should be another top division where those big schools had to play in order to compete in the BCS or playoff or whatvever..i would rather go watch what should be competetive games week after week...right now the MAC is probably on a level with a conference like the Sunbelt from top to bottom and if you read the mags thats what others think also...maybe we need to play more teams like that, develop some rivalries by playing competetive games and winning more...right now for a lot of teams at this level it ain't working very well...
  2. check page 75 of the program for the Syracuse game...coach 'Ron' Ianello is in his first year...thats the problem...anyway the coach is not going away this year or next...we may not have agreed with the hire but he will get his chance over the next 2 years at least...will the 'light come on' sooner than later?...this coach is still trying to figure out what he has on the field and who can/will play in his system...it is obvious that some players who have been here for a while are not making the adjustment yet...i look at a couple guys on the defensive and offensive lines for example..and obviously the qb and his receivers are not in sync with the new system...so lets go to the games and hope that bright light at the end of the tunnel is not a train and that the tunnel is shorter than it looks...
  3. i totally agree on the point about Biggsy...w/o him the '05 team never does what it does...there ARE players on this team who SHOULD be able to step up and lead...plenty of sr's here...maybe Ianello is not encouraging that, maybe the guys who have been here aren't comfortable stepping up...hard for me to believe there are not 1or 2 guys who are capable...AA seems to be a 'rah, rah' type active on the sideline..hope someone steps up because the majority of the team is not behind this staff yet..
  4. too late to talk about a different coach...many here were hoping for head coaching experience to come in here...but...we all know how this game is played...a faculty member sitting next to us in 212 made the comment about how the football program and the athletic department in general has to live off of student fees...can't support itself...maybe part of the problem is that the AD feels no sense of responsibility to fans because they know their income will be there even if the product is lets say subpar..obviously most of those kids who pay the fees never go to any athletic events...not saying that this dosen't happen in most other places but it sure removes a lot of incentive for the AD and its employees..shoot,coaches get fired and still get paid..oh well 10-2 Northern Illinois...
  5. Attendance was 10,086 of which half were present. Next home game we will get 3,000. These are the lowest of days to be a Zip. i was there...i doubt there were 10,000 of anything there unless you count high school bands, their instruments and the shoes everyone was wearing...
  6. hell it might not just be nicely..could be lots of people unfortunately...
  7. the guy sitting next to us in section 212 commented about what a smart game Gardner-Webb played...well coached...never panicked...exploited akron's weaknesses...the sign of a good coach is being able to finesse when you are physically overmatched...GW's staff did that to akron...BUT the zips are even worse than i thought...the secondary especially the safeties, is a train wreck..still no consistent pass rush...nicely is still lost in this system..thankfully Nate Burney is emerging from the hole that brookhart had him buried in
  8. ain't gonna happen
  9. You are an IDIOT! EVERYONE who agrees are IDIOTS as well! You all are the type of fans that will only be satisfied . First you called for JD’s head and you IDIOTS got your wish. Now 2 games in your calling for Coach I’s head?? You’re a joke, and a complete IDIOT, as a fan you are worthless and the University of Akron would be better off if you never came back to another sporting event! 90% of the people on the board know absolutely nothing about football or the inter-workings of a division 1 program. Yes that includes Captain K I am sick of reading all of the bs on this board. I am going to sit down tonight and school you idiots! So what is your point? agreed, whats your point...brookhart needed to go...we didn't ask for another guy with no head coaching experience, that was the ad's choice...he could have hired a coach with h/coaching experience...look Ianello is not going to be fired no matter what happens this year...nor should he be..but it is apparent to most thoughtful fans that the team has a little more talent than is being displayed right now...i just hope none of the players get seriously hurt against kentucky and indiana
  10. we'll just stick with 'predictions'...this is a good week to see if you can run the ball at all w/AA and Burney...or go elsewhere with the ground game...a chance for Nicely to hopefully get more comfortable under center...you would think the defense could control this thing somewhat...but a big play by GW might be out there...tough to know how good/bad GW is...Akron 27-7... see you there
  11. This post sums up my assessment exactly. Two biggest weaknesses - receiving corps and defensive secondary. first i'm really surprised that the realists have come out...there is a whole bunch not to like about that game...what really continues to jump out is that even when playing a middling big east team like syracuse, the difference in the overall talent level between that team and akron is painfully evident..if akron was starting a bunch of fros/sophs that would be one thing... those were a lot of jrs/srs on the field...look out when you hit the sec and big ten...we all know its only one game and the first game so lets stop about firing the coaches its too late to change that part of the equation...it was obvious the staff did not have the team prepared to play generally especially on offense...its obvious that Nicely, and i love the guy, is really gonna have a hard time under center...he can't see the field and missed some open receivers...the coaches ran him more out of the gun in the 2nd which means they see it too...but he IS slow..not that it mattered with the way the offensive line trashed themselves...those guys especially the left side were awful...its hard to tell about the running game because the o-line was so bad but i'm afraid alex allen may not have the extra gear he used to have...burney will help but he can't pound all the time...the defense is what it is...the safeties are awful right now..the corners are small and continue to have trouble with bigger receivers...minimal pressure on the qb w/o loads of blitzes...the coaches didn't help much with some of the play calling particularly when akron got the ball deep in the cuse end with over 2 minutes to play and 3 TO/s..all of a sudden they decide the have to throw the ball three times...not a run attempt...i get the feeling the staff does not have a handle on what they have in the way of palyer's abilities yet....better hope for good weather this year otherwise attendance will be...how much worse can it get? there's always next week...oh could have been worse...look what happend to Turner Gill at KU...
  12. you related to Ed who works in Canton?
  13. show me...nothing that indicates that the players who were here last year on the defensive side will perform any better as a unit this year at least not in the first month of the season....offensively,don't see this unit scoring a ton of points at this point in the season and thats what it would take for a win...syracuse will at least cover...hope i'm wrong...the crowd? labor day weekend, questionable weather, apathetic students, losing team...unless syracuse brings several thousand maybe 15-18K...tops
  14. I'll follow up on those two points... First, I don't care what 11 guys are on the field for us defensively, and what their position says in the program. We just better be a lot better at tackling than we've been with many of these same guys on the field the last couple of years. Secondly, I'm wondering when we suddenly became a team with good talent several guys deep. We've struggled with that ever since our arrival as a 1-A school. And even if that situation has improved, I'd still question whether our talent on the bench is topping BCS level programs. there has been a lot of talk about how this defense has a lot of talent in some places. But,they have just not been able to stop people and take over a game when its been needed. Unless the entire unit plays at a significantly higher level the offense won't be able to score enough points. Syracuse won last year with a bad team. With Carter at RB this will give a good indication as to whether the Zips have progressed on the defensive side of the ball...
  15. Although I agree that RI deserves a chance, I disagree with believing "we got the best that was out there". IMHO, Wistrcill did not give due diligence to the search for a head coach. He took the easy way out and hired a former acquaintance. I don't like RI's qualifications (i.e., "lack thereof") and am not excited about football season. I did renew my season ticket, but I fully expect to just go and watch with little to get excited about. I'm certain there were numerous successful head coaches at FCS and lower division schools who would have taken the opportunity to move to FBS. Although nothing is guaranteed, a successful HC from a lower division would have given me more confidence in his abilities to "run" a football team. wow...looks there are other realists out there...i understand optimism...we had it in '05 and '06 and i think maybe in '75 and '76 too...don't trash the guy personally...but please don't think that ianello was the best coach out there who would have come to akron...was not...the athletic department is not doing him or the team any favors though with this apparent lack of pub about the coach and the team....
  16. BIGGSY was he biggest loss from the '05 team...only took some folks 5 to figure it out...
  17. I think the decision on alcohol sales is ultimately up to the conference, after the individual school. I know a guy from Georgia who says the SEC has a ban on alcohol sales at all athletic events, which is mind boggling to me. Football and beer, what a great marriage. As I posted earlier. The NCAA has no such band. It's up to the conferences and schools. While the SEC ban is true. I do believe that alcohol is available in the suites or loges. I know there were no alcohol concession sales in the Georgia Dome for the SEC championship due to SEC rules. But, I've seen drinks flowing in the suites. buy a suite and invite us...
  18. This opens the door for beer to be sold throughout the stadium, and possibly a student bar somewhere on campus eventually. It also means that there is a possibility of having a restaraunt there that serves alchohol (Winking Lizard in the north endzone, anyone?). can't believe the LIZ isn't in the area already...
  19. 23x4....the cumulative IQ of the folks in the picture???
  20. you can't tell a thing from spring...nicely did nothing to indicate he will not be the starter...last year is a far better indication of his talent...its time to move on from guys who have not played and won't play under the new regime...if you couldn't get on the field with a bad team...well...running back?..need to see AA in a real game...defense?...come see after the 'cuse game...
  21. I won't be surprised if the whole season is a sleeper. ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. at least it is somewhat realistic...they are not expecting the zips to win anything...as should be the case under the circumstances..
  22. nicely still looks good...lafrance made some catches
  23. What if he never figures it out? Almost to my thirties, I am just now fully realizing how much I enjoy chicken wings and beer. I want to fully realize my potential before it is too late. Nice. In my mid 30's and realize wings and beer are IT....nothing more to see here...that's it...oh yeah, boobs are nice too...enjoy. My wish is sometime soon the Zips play YSU and end this pointless discussion. Zips would win 9 out of 10 games played against YSU. I would be highly upset with 9 out of 10. There is no excuse for us not to win 10 out of 10. That was just a hypothetical scenario guys.....dont be specific..... ok ok Zips would beat YSU ANYTIME they played each other...BETTER? GOOD. I wouldn't go that far boys. Once again, you are vastly overspeculating the difference between teams in a crap 1-A conference such as our own and FCS teams. Sure, YSU hasn't been that good in the past couple of years, and most years we're going to have a better team, but in a given year that we're down, and they're up, they can certainly beat us, and history shows that (just ask GP1 ). I guarantee you that about half of the FCS playoff teams from last year would've beaten us. ya...instead of morgan state(leroy kelly's alma mater) or flower gardening and web lets schedule oh, villanova or app state etc etc and see what the difference is...
  24. 20-30k??? no crowds that big..its sad that the team's performance can't bring in fans...LIABILITY is an issue
  25. as usual... weather shitty
