I'd start with the pass game if they come out in a run stop defense. I think they will target Warren Ball and see if our previously injured QB can pass and if our depleted receiver corps from last year can get open. No read option if Woodson is not a serious threat in running the football for nice gains and the decision needs to be quick if we do run it. Work Warren into the game for 20 to 25 carries with a balanced attack once they back out of the box. I also wouldn't mind seeing a little razzle dazzle fake or a Chapman pass in this game. Iowa State is very good and we will have to do just about everything right to win. Lets hope Bowden doesn't treat this as a scrimmage in order to work into shape for MAC play. These winnable out of conference games mean a lot to the fans and could determine if we get a decent bowl invite. By the way, I have to wonder if the Bahama bowl or some of the lower tier Florida bowls will be available this year after hurricane Irma.

I would like to see us through to Ball if they load up to stop the run. We need to get him the ball, one way or the other.

I noticed this as well.  Our pass rush was pretty weak.

I did think Brian Reinke looked good.

We did have true freshmen in the game fairly early, so I don't feel as strongly about this but I also felt like the OL had more trouble than they should have.

I am troubled that our receivers had difficulty getting open and at times they broke their routes. I would like to have seen Dre Williams and Nate Stewart. Young and Smith have never demonstrated consistency and Smith had too many penalties.

  3. It was also nice to see Reinke have a solid game. He has improved and can make a difference for us.

Brandon Junk got called for too many penalties. We are in trouble at tight end. Who is the next man up at TE?

Also of note: Zach Gingrich kicked an extra point in the second half, his first score as a college athlete, and long snapper Hayden Grover snapped on an extra point in the second half. Chuck Turfe carried the ball for 7 yards on what I think was his first college carry, at the end of the game.

So far in the first 2 games the following true freshman have gotten playing time: Meeks, Williams, Burkhart, Brimage, and Sampson. Seems like more than freshman than usual. I like how Sampson looked on that series. Came away with the sack.

edit: add Kobie Booker to the list.

I also liked seeing Deltron Sands have a good series. He should be getting looks as the #2 guy.

Talent differences aside, does it look like we have improved in any way from last week? I'm not sure we can say that we have.

I don't think you can really tell because we have gone from one end of the talent extreme to the other.

I don't see the alleged "noodle arm" that got some so upset last week, though. I see issues with receivers.

Have yourself a day, Mr. Hunt! I tried to get him in both of my leagues, but I think he got picked up off of sheer average draft position, which was higher than it would have been due to him being named the outright starter from Ware getting injured.

    I tried and failed, too.

Most yards from line of scrimmage, ever, in an NFL RB debut.

We competed like a bad 1-AA.... stop making excuses. A legitimate D-1 team doesn't get completely ass beat like that. The toledo's of the world are in the same position as us. They don't just shrug it off and make excuses like you just did. They expect to compete.

We have some better G5 programs, but Toledo would have been soundly beat, too. Yo7 have unrealistic expectations.

So you missed him under throw a wide open wr on a deep ball that would be 6?

So you missed him yell at the refs, teammates,  and coaches? Those are all facts.

Personally I'd let him sit next week.  Gives Kato some much needed game reps while hopefully growing his confidence.  All while Woody recovers.  To me it's a win-win.

How can you be so sure the long ball misses were not timing issues? He has not thrown to Smith and Young all that much. They were not getting first team reps last year and he is just returning. That being said, I didn't see any better timing from the other guys, either...maybe it has something to do with route running, as well?

Let Woody work out his timing against Pine Bluff next week.

It is not character assasination. Even when Tommy wasn't in the game last year I was watching him pout on the sidelines. He needs to grow up.

As for the game...Tommy left at least 1 and probably 2 tds on the field because he was not capable of throwing the ball downfield. Because of this inability, penn state condensed the field and made us even more 1 dimensional than we already were. Kato needs to be the guy playing.... period.

You saw one thing. I saw another. I did not see enough of KN1 to form an opinion.

Exactly.  Last season, when several of us were talking about his demeanor, and reporting some other things we were being told, some decided not to listen and call it "character assassination" or something.  Maybe it took a few more games for the picture to become clearer to some.

I want him out there because he's the most talented guy we have.  But if the season isn't going well, or the situation deteriorates again, we might have to move on.

I don't see his body language the way you do and it was character assassination. You want a winner to be frustrated when things are going poorly, not complacent.  He leads the offense when he is on the field. He was frustrated with getting hit after he released the ball. I can't blame him. He was frustrated with not connecting with receivers. I can't blame him. His decision-making still gives him the advantage and his timing will return. I did not see anything that showed a lack of arm strength. I saw a lack of timing.

Like many on this board after a frustrating game I have to post some thoughts so here goes.

    • No one expected us to win, but no one expected us to play so poorly

I believe that I predicted that the game was going to be ugly. I totally expected us to be this badly outmatched and do not believe it is a reflection of how good or bad we will play for the rest of the season. I believe PSU to be that good, this year.  I think there are legitimate arguments for PSU to be higher than #6.

I think Woodson is still a question mark, but I think we need to see more.

  13. Honestly, Tommy's body language was the same it always is. I didn't see enough from KN1 to warrant benching Tommy, yet.

I despise the week after we play a P5 group bc ZN completely loses perspective and over analyzes stuff that is generally not a good representation of the season.
