  1. House of Blues? The bar section is a bit small, but yes, an alternative. When that place first opened the service sucked.I have noticed an improvement lately.I think they're "on a mission from God." You know, I just thought of another one. It's tucked away on Boliver near the Gateway East parking deck right off E. 9th.Lots of room in there...it's called Champions. That would be a perfect spot. It has changed hands a few times..not many people know about it...but the atmospher is pretty good in there. There's also the Thirsty Parrott in the Caxton Building on Huron...used to be Pete and Dewey's. That's the one with the big deck behind Caxton across from the Bob Feller statue at the Jake.
  2. I wonder if all the attention is the new publisher, who has a saying about making a newspaper successful:local; local; local;I also like the community page in the local section.I was afraid the recent sale was going to turn the Beacon into the Canton Suppository...lets keep our fingers crossed that the bleeding has stopped.Did I just use suppository and bleeding in the same sentence.
  3. The thing was written back in '39.They didn't think of such things back then. perhaps I should clarify.they didn't think of such things as Akron U vs U of Akron. They did think about making a song rhyme, however.
  4. The thing was written back in '39.They didn't think of such things back then.
  5. If they changed the words they should put the accurate version in the programs.
  6. Zip fans...time to start planning for Cleveland.Any suggestions on the pre-game activities? We are probably going to be either the 7 or 9 p.m. game on Thursday.Everyone will be going to the Winking Lizard on Prospect/Huron.Alternatives:Alice Coopers...E 9thAleci's Huron Rd.Clevelander..Huron Rd.Buffalo Bills...E 4thFlannery's...ProspectWhat do you think?
  7. Well, no doubt, the song was written back in the day.I agree, time for an update.I do like our fight song...both words and music. You hear other songs in the MAC and I just don't think they compare.Zip go the Zippers!
  8. I don't know Bum...The words 87 quotes are the same ones in the spring commencement program. If they changed it, you would have thought they wouldn't put it in the program that way.
  9. Zip_ME87 speaks the truth. From the spring commencement program:The University of Akron fight song, "The Akron Blue and Gold," was written in 1939 by Fred Waring, nationally known composer and leader of the wildly popular band, Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians."In response to a request from the Univeristy's student newspaper, Waring wrote, "a distinctive song" for The University of Akron. The Akron Blue and Gold premiered over his NBC hookup on November 17, 1939, and has been used as the University's fight song ever since.Personally, I try to avoid Akron U or AU...but sometimes with friends I think Akron U is an OK slang. However, for anything formal, it has to be UA or The University of Akron.Too much to do about nothing? Perhaps.
  10. thats because the zips have no past in b-ball, other then unfulfilled potential and no championships!!!!!!!!! NOThat's because Can't sucks big time in football and they don't want to talk about the past in that sport. But they will talk about the past when it comes to basketball. They, and I guess you, want to have it both ways. And Akron has had it's share of basketball championships even if only one had come on the DI level. LETS SEE, AKRON 1 MAC FOOTBALL CHAMP, WE HAVE 1 MAC FOOTBALL CHAMP,NOW YOU ARE GOING BACK TO YOUR COLLEGE DIV. AND DII DAYS TO FIND A BBALL CHAMPIONSHIP, OMG THAT IS COMPARING APPLES AND ORANGES. THAT IS WHY YOU WILL ALWAYS BE REGARDED AS THE HIGH SCHOOL ON THE HILL.SEE YOU SUNDAY AT THE MACC. Well, lets see...Akron has been in the MAC since '91 and has one football championship. Can't has been in the MAC since, what..the early 50's..and has only one MAC football Championship.and before '99 your basketball team wasn't worth anything either. And in football, Akron has beaten Can't something like 10 out of the last 11 meetings.Do yourself a favor and don't bring up football.

  12. Dr.....I think the Beacon does OK in covering the Zips.they run features...game previews...game stories...an occasional column from Pluto.Coverage on the road may be a question at times when they just run a small wire story or one from a freelancer. All and all, I'd give them a B-.Remember, we're fans, so we are always going to want more. They are a newspaper that must judge the interests of ALL their readers.
  13. Report this discrimination the Better Business Bureau! What the did violates the fair-ticket buying act of 1933.
  14. Hey. I have no problem with Can't having another 20-win season. Here's to them keeping it only a 20-win season! I toast your toast!!!
  15. Well, we're guarenteed at least the number 3 seed.Other than the pleasure of beating the Flushes on their home court, there really isn't any other significance to Sunday's game....not that there needs to be.The Flushes on the Can't board are bathing in the glow of 9 straight 20 win seasons.Isn't it funny that when you talk football with them, they only say the present counts (because they beat us last year). But when you talk basketball, they're all about bringing up the past.
  16. I'd like to think so, but Frenchy just said they only hit 63 percent from the line.
  17. I can't imagine people ragging on any student who shows up to support the team....even if they only come to the game they wish to attend. As someone who went to Akron when there were no such organizations, I say thank you to those who paint their faces, wear the gold T-shirts and yell till their voices are no more...no matter how many times you show up to the games. Because even if it is only once, you've already done more to support the team than 90 percent of the student population.Zippy tips his cap to you.

    Rifle Team

Third consecutive championship.Way to go!!!Zippy is proud!
  19. I'm glad we won and all, but I do have a soft spot for Duquesne. My Dad played football there from 1946 to 50.I danced through their media guide, and they played DI at the time. Teams like Mississipi and Miss. State, Alabama..yes, even Ohio U.Elmer Layden, one of the Notre Dame four horsemen, was their football coach at one time...I did not know that.
  20. I wonder how the reporter thinks we regained the lead in the MAC East??????
  21. You make good points.First of all, yes, I graduated in '81, so when I was a student, we were still DII and playing in Memorial Hall with Ken Cunningham and Bob Rupert as our coaches. Rupert, by the way, was KD's high school coach at Firestone...but I digress. The Huggins era was electric to be sure. Even though I graduated, I was a big fan and went to the games on a consistent basis (pre marriage ) The OVC tournament down in Murfeesboro...the NIT game at Ohio State...it was a blast. However, the Coleman and Hipsher eras took a lot of steam out of this program. We've been D I for some time now, so I think the newness of success at this level has worn off.I'm not trying to say that we have mirrored the excitement or fan support of the mid 80's.All I'm saying is that it can happen again...that's all...but we're not there yet.Hell, remember when we used to sell out the Bowl for Acme Zip? That place was packed. I remember we would hop on the buses in front of the library and take them down to the bowl..we had enough fans for a card section....a card section..at Akron?Things have changed. There's so much more competition for the entertainment buck. It is difficult comparing eras.I hope that with KD's committment to his alma mater, and I really believe he is a good coach..that if we have a couple of winning seasons...like Huggins...the electricity may return, even with all the entertainment competition and distractions.I have to believe, though, that if we ever get a string of great basketball like, and I hesitate to use the word, K E N T, and we still draw as pathetic and the flushes...then it will be time to wave the white flag.Proud to be Blue & GoldDid I mention that ?
  22. Article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.Duq coach said his players were not ready to play at this level.http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07058/765299-135.stm
  23. It's very difficult to compare the Huggins era with the current one.First of all, our program was growing back then. We were in the OVC with a bunch of schools with which we really couldn't relate. We were in the infancy of our D I experience.Much different.
  24. It's official. BG is staying in the East...according to a Temple Football news release issued today."After being an affiliate member of the MAC for the past two seasons, 2007 marks Temple's initial campaign as a full conference member. The Owls will play in the MAC East Division with Akron, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Can't State, Miami and Ohio. Under the leadership of second-year head coach Al Golden, Temple will play eight league foes in 2007, including four at home, in what will be their 109th season of football."To read entire news release:http://owlsports.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/.../022607aaa.html
  25. Sorry, poor excuse. If the Zips would ever rip off 9 consecutive 20 win seasons, mulitple NCAA berths and in turn barely draw an average of 3000 fans during another 20 win season, I would seriously find another favorite team and disown my alumni. Thats embarrassing and pitiful. What it shows to me is that Can't has had no idea how to market and build a fanbase. 10 years of winning and you can't develop a solid following...its a small 6000 seat arena with cheap tickets....it's not that hard with winning...That is the pinnacle of failure....it's classic Can't....It's why 10 years of consistent winning in Akron and additional corporate suppport that comes with it, you're talking about building a larger arena to handle the crowds, not worrying about getting a thousand additional fans out to a game. Think Big. Dont think like K.E.N.T. I agree Z.I congratulate Can't for their success on the court. However, their fan base is pathetic. Can't fans have no business talking smack when it comes to attendance or faithful fans.
