Game 3—@Marshall Thundering Herd
skip-zip replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
I'm actually going to give a lot of the credit for this win to the coaches for what they did during the course of the game. 1) Marshall was passing the ball like crazy, and we eventually found ways to frustrate them and get some stops. 2) Marshall started having success running the ball, and we made adjustments there to take them away from it again. 3) We found ways to get some big running plays with a #3 Running back. 4) Getting Traylor-Bennet involved? Really? Even on a TE screen and TE shovel pass? 5) We found some pass routes that started opening the field. Forget the big deep balls for a second. We're always going to try to exploit those one-on-one matchups. But, some of the biggest pass plays that kept chains moving included some of those catches that Lane made on shorter inside slants. 6) And maybe more importantly.....they kept these guys focused when it looked like Marshall was pulling away early. -

Ok....Who wants to admit that when Marshall was up 21-7.....AND had the ball....that it was "here we go again" time ? 2nd Quarter Scoring was really 34-0? Isn't that nearly mathematically impossible? Who knew that this was also our first win EVER in Huntington? What a day !!! Hope we saved some explosive plays for next week. -
It would have been a great idea, that's why we don't see it here. Hopefully, things like this will be better coordinated in the future with better leadership decisions being made recently. This reminds me what ruined my day today. I had to go to an Akron General facility today, and everyone was dressed in Ohio State gear. I'm assuming that they all want to show their support for tomorrow for their "home team". Yes....I said Akron General. Our hometown hospital. Do you think hospitals in Pittsburgh PA have Penn State Pride day at work? Or, hospitals in Buffalo have Syracuse Pride Day? The answer is a big NO.

I was hoping to hear more also. It seems that the App. State game is getting all of the attention. Heck, a few of our own posters are even ready to put them on a pedestal for playing a close game against Tennessee. But nothing at all about Marshall? Frankly, I hope App. State is the easier game, since it's a home game. -
I wonder how disappointed our opponent's fans would be if they had to pay $6.95 for our crappy broadcast?

Call me biased, but I like the way his career accomplishments and records stack up against many of the people on this list.

I was there, and I agree. Despite the fact that their running game eventually created some open areas for receivers, those guys still made some really good catches. I don't recall a ball in the hands of a receiver or TE that was not a catch. I was actually impressed and frustrated at the same time.

future mens college cup locations

Shameful that the body that regulates college athletics is going to join the little "righteous" parade in saying that telling men to use men's restroom, and women to use women's restrooms is discriminatory. -
Yep, that's the objective. I don't think we'll venture from that anytime soon.

The bigger question is...how did people miss the blatant spelling errors on the cover of this video above? -

At first, I thought maybe he was trying to lie, so nobody would fear a drop off, since we have to go to our #2 running back. But, he did go on to say that Ball had solidified the #1 spot at some time since then. -

Maybe not, but you'd be a fool to believe that others did not pay attention to what we were doing. And since it's only been a few posts since I mentioned Arkansas State, the perennial power of App State's conference (Sun Belt), few know that they made the jump to I-A about 5 years after us. Some things that they did mirrored what Akron had done, and some things did not. They've had a pretty magical last 5 years on Sun Belt standards (with occasional flirtation with national rankings), but they struggled for many years to get to that point, which started all those years ago with a big PR boost with the hiring of a legendary coach. -

I'll give you Marshall, to some extent. OK. But, you really want to put App. State on a pedestal right now? As a team that MAC schools should aspire to be? Arkansas State has dominated the Sun Belt for 5 years, and I am not even sure if they measure up to a top level MAC program (beating Ball State and Kent in bowl games, while getting destroyed by Toledo isn't going to convince anyone). But when/if App. State can ever approach their level of success, you might have the beginning of a discussion. -

Here's what I predict will happen. 1) We'll throw in another capable RB who can easily handle 10-12 carries a game. If the line can run block, we'll get what we need here. 2) Tommy will be asked to run about 5 QB draws per game. 3) We'll continue spreading the ball around the field with a loaded receiver corp in the passing game. A little adjustment, but we have smart coaches who can make that work. Getting defensive stops against teams that are somewhere between Wisconsin and VMI is my primary concern right now. That is what will make or break this season. -
Every once in a while, we have to go back to correcting people on this one. 1) Owens was 21 games UNDER .500 as Akron's football coach (40-61). And please go back and look at how many of his 40 wins over 8 season were against lower division teams and pathetic MAC teams like Buffalo, EMU and Kent. This was an era where the MAC had true cellar-dwellers, and he feasted on them. His lone significant MAC win was against a QB with a broken leg. Case closed. 2) JD broke through that barrier and won early in his Akron tenure because he brought in QB Getsy, OL Aleman, and RB Biggs as transfers, and made the brilliant move converting Hixson to WR.

That's not correct either. We played D-III and D-II, before moving to D-1AA, and eventually to D-1A. And for the record, we didn't just "decide" to move divisions. We needed to meet many requirements, which included meeting minimum attendance numbers, before our move was approved. -

So, you're saying that since there was no real divisions between programs "back in the day", then it's acceptable for every program to say that they are "rejoining" D-1A when they move their way up to the largest division? This was clearly a case where the writer erred in their description of Akron's move in 1987, and didn't do their homework. -
Just got back from the long weekend trip, which turned into a mini-vacation. Here's my thoughts on Madison: 1) Loved the layout of the town. Very unique. It sits on a rolling "isthmus" (as the locals call it) between two bodies of water, and a rich history as a former Civil War camp (thus the name "Camp Randall"). If it was warmer, we would have seen more beach activity, but we did get to see the sailboats and windsufers. Makes me wish our campus was on water. 2) Came home with tons of cheese curds in the cooler. We had to do it. 3) Their gameday atmosphere was among the best of the dozens of road games we've attended over the years. The rally on campus made me jealous. So did all of the traditional things that they did during and after the games, which got nearly 100% participation....students and old people. Unbelievable. The game: I talked all week about "big plays" (or lack of). And here's what buried us early. 1) Two interception chances that dropped through our hands. 2) Fumble by Ball following our only big early running play, which could have helped put us back in the game with the JoJo punt return TD that soon followed. 3) Lane getting called for offensive pass interference on a push off.....and then inexplicably cannot get a call after being spun around by his waist by a DB on a play that resulted in an interception. GAME OVER....if we couldn't get those opportunities to go our way early, we were doomed playing a solid team that was disciplined, and overmatched us physically.

Do you expect this LV guy to understand that these "Big 10 Bottom Feeders", as he calls them, would have to play ROAD GAMES if they competed in the MAC?
-
No, I was just correcting your lack of knowledge by indicating that we have to play Chryst on the road this time. You obviously missed that we beat him on the road. Maybe you should check your facts before you post?
-
In case you missed it earlier: 18 MAC victories over Big 10 schools in a 9 year span. As many as 4 in one year. And these were not just "bottom feeders".
-
Knock Knock. Is anyone home?? Our win against Chryst's Pitt team was ON THE ROAD.
-
Akron is a MAC team. And I was directly responding to your misinformed notion that the bottom of the Big 10 is somehow still vastly superior to the MAC. Two more things: 1) Plenty of the MAC wins over the years against Big 10 teams were not just "Big 10 bottom feeders", as you call them. 2) Akron doesn't play Big 10 teams very frequently in the OOC part of our schedule. So, we have far less opportunities than some of our other conference foes. And with the exception of one game against Indiana several years ago, no Big 10 team has ever played us at home.

And maybe the most significant fact that Wisconsin fans wouldn't know. Even though he was RAW last year, he still finished the season something like 2nd in the country in Yards per Reception?
