Yep, we missed connections on plenty of short stuff too. I hear you about the lost yards running plays. That trick reverse play that lost a ton of yards when we were driving for the first TD (and had to settle for a field goal) ended up being awfully costly.

Zipgrad....Hard to lean on a running game that only had 88 yards in 35 carries. That was really the story. We were forced to pass a lot, and were missing the mark. I really thought we just tried for too many big pass plays today. It worked last week, but not this week. The underneath stuff may have been a better focus. Hard to tell. Just not enough Offense, period.

ZZZip....I always forget about the carpeting in the stairwells. That's been all torn up for years. You'd figure that might be a rather inexpensive fix. -
The 2.5 point spread seems to make sense to me. If we were playing in Athens, that would be a Touchdown, or a little more. So, it seems pretty fair.

Morris...On a much larger and more permanent scale, you do a nice job making a comparison that illustrates the absurdity of using uniforms that don't have your colors. Could you imagine an entire arena with a color other than our own? -
I was just telling my wife the other day that we never had a T-Shirt Tailgate this season. Three home games, and nothing close to 70 degree sunny weather. What are the chances? I'm bummed. And since I've lived in NE Ohio my entire life, I can probably count on something completely out of the ordinary, and we'll get that kind of day for the home game on Oct. 31st.

Paint...huh? Well, at least the empty bleacher sections won't look as "bleacher-ish" -
Rain, 55 Degrees, and not much exposure from our win last Saturday? Not the best recipe for a decent crowd, just when we need it.

Wow JohnnyZip....I had completely forgotten that all of those games against the NY teams were the same year. That mega-overtime final game at the Rubber Bowl against Buffalo will never be forgotten. I think the Old Bowl was not ready to give up the Zips. I'm glad you got to go to Syracuse for that game. That's one road game that I am sorry I missed, along with the win at NC State. Fortunately, I didn't miss the Pitt game last year.
-
Non-Conference: These two immediately came to mind, but I checked and they were not by 20 points....barely. We beat Syracuse by 14 on the road in 2008 We beat Army by 19 on the road in 2008 also.

They keep alluding to the fact that they knew that "Tommy had the talent", Maybe they were waiting for his mental game to catch up. Who knows. I always loved the way he played, and threw the ball. But, the decent start against OU last year, followed by the stellar 1st half at Ball State was followed by the 2nd half disaster at Ball State. So, I was confused after that. Maybe development time was all Tommy needed. I just think that they had 3 QBs who were good in various aspects, and not in others. And it was difficult to make choices among them. Maybe now that Tommy has playing time under his belt, his development is starting to show itself. I don't think this is a case where they clearly had one better Quarterback, and everyone was just missing it.

It's actually a rather interesting discussion from a business standpoint. When you are reaching out to cater to more distant clients, you risk losing the support of your local base. For instance, if the Beacon suddenly thought that St. Ignatius fans were reading the Beacon, they might start catering to them, at the cost of pissing off the St. V's and Hoban's. That's normally not a beneficial business decision, in the long run. Columbus has a paper that covers their sports market, because they are most closely linked to that market, and can best service that market. Akron's paper should find that they are best suited to cover Akron's sports market too.
-
A "deadline" for the paper would not explain having no game pictures in the physical newspaper. They can take those and send them anytime. We also now know that we had a "staff reporter" assigned to our game. No excuse for that either. Plus, our game ended a little after 10pm. And for those who don't know, oftentimes the game story is already written, except for the ending. This is why you often see those details of what happened in the first, second, and third quarters sprinkled in toward the end of a game story. The games outcome can be put together very quickly and sent in as a full story for a game that ends at 10pm. I'm sure a Browns or OSWho game would be handled just fine. Folks, there's no excuse here. It was decided that the Akron game would get little coverage, and would be a small story by a staff writer in the corner of a far inside page. I'm pretty sure there was no "Plan B" for a great, season-defining performance from their "Home Team".

Akron is #6 in the first NCAA rpi of the year
skip-zip replied to TennZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Sorry TennZip......I meant quarterfinals, not semifinals. But, thanks for the detailed explanation. Dave, not only will the conference games drag down the RPI, but our conference affiliation alone will cause the committee to penalize us again at selection time, like always. If today was the end of the season, they'd probably put us somewhere around #14 or something. -

That's great news. Technically (unless we end up getting screwed again), this would get us Home Games all the way until the national semifinal if we can hold such a ranking, correct? -
Tommy was starting his first game, threw for 268 yards, and nearly got us a road win in a difficult place.
-
And the story came from a "staff reporter". 2/3 of the front of the sports page dedicated to OSwho, and 2/3 of an inside page, and tons of pictures. Akron has a small, upper right corner story on that inside page, and no pictures. That's beyond ridiculous.

Could it be that they were just running plays that they thought would work against ULL, and we shouldn't be overanalyzing it anymore than that right now?

I'm elated tonight, and then have to read that this is a better win than the Pitt last year from a couple of posters? Lets put this into perspective. It's a win against a parallel league, in some people's eyes, and we want to prove otherwise. We did our part. We got a good, quality win against a quality team from a weak conference. However, this is not a win against an ACC team that was playing in front of 40k in an NFL stadium, and was a 21 point favorite.

If we keep winning, and get solidly into the Top 10, hopefully we won't even have any road games until the College Cup, or possibly one game before that. -
If it wasn't for Antino, I might have gone to sleep before the video was over. Thankfully, Josh has 4 years to work on his enthusiasm level

I think most of us have a great appreciation for those who have done so much to keep this going, and for those who take so much of their own time to gather and share information. If it's not said often enough, then I'll add another THANK YOU. But, I also think that this can be a tremendous resource for those on the outside, such as the casual, new, and non-fans who might be looking for an outlet to get more informed, involved and engaged. So, I think we'd be remiss if we didn't view an increase in traffic as a sign that this resource is contributing to an increase in fan support, which is certainly something that we all yearn for.

ZippyRulz...that's certainly an eerily similar stadium. You're right. But, their club/suites/press building is quite puny compared to our current facility

I don't know if anyone else caught this.... I was out to dinner with my wife last Saturday when the Aflac Trivia Question came up on the TV during the Suckeyes/NIU football game. The question was: Who was the only MAC team to defeat OSWho? I actually always knew that it was the Buchtel College team under the direction of Heisman. I was impressed that they knew that this was the modern-day University of Akron, and referenced this correctly when they were displaying the answer on the screen and talking about it. A little bit of nice trivia, and nice national publicity with that one.

ME87....Since you want to be technical, you're counting the previous game, which then makes it 9 days. School issues are understandable. But, I think you were going after a scenario where this was some kind of brutal timeline from a playing standpoint. It's actually funny how it similarly compares to the road trip that the basketball team took last season, right before they played Penn State. Having those two games 5 days apart would have felt like a vacation to them.
