Zips Quiz TTTTE (that team to the east) at Akron
skip-zip replied to MDZip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Blue and Gold. I'm gonna give you a pass on your TTTTE reference, even though it sounds like the Suckeye Honks with their "team up north" phrase. I have no problem saying KENT STATE. Especially when I hear our students add "sucks" to the end. I love the 30-pack graphic. Nice work. -
Yes, there were "bookstores" down there. There was also a "theater" on main street that featured non-family entertainment if you know what I mean. I remember using the term "ballet" quite a bit in my younger days to describe one of my destinations.
-
Oh, there were several "seedy" establishments that popped up in that area during that time.

Funny. Outside The Lines on ESPN was just discussing this situation with Mike Johnson, his son, and Harbaugh. It seems that the experts all agree that it's a bit unethical, but totally legal and justified when you look at Johnson's background. If he had just been the #1 QB prospect's father who worked at Walmart, it would be a different story.

Matt Kaulig (Racing) Former Zips QB
skip-zip replied to Section210Zip's topic in Akron Zips Football
As a Zips QB, Matt might be best known to us "veterans" as the guy who stepped in for an injured Marcel Weems in the final game of the season in 1992 to lead us to a road victory at Cincinnati. As most of you know, that win gave Gerry and the boys their 7th win of the season that year, and that 7-3-1 record still stands today as the best win/loss percentage season in our D1-A history. -
I with you, Joe. Some might not be old enough to remember what our Downtown looked like in the 70s, when the rubber factories were moving, buildings were empty, and nobody even went downtown after the workday was over. Sure, more can be done. But it's come a long, long way.

Yep. He's just fallen behind.

He's even indicated that Hughes COULD be a big help. Yet, he played a couple of minutes against OU and go pulled and never returned. Did the same again against Ball State. "Getting back into shape" wouldn't seem to be the issue, based on that data. I just think Utomi and Poke are doing more for us right now, and the staff is comfortable rotating Big Dog, Kwan, Utomi, and Poke at those 2 post spots, with the majority of that time going to the top 2 guys. I said this previously, but expect to see all of these situation as fluid, depending on the situation, match ups, opponent, etc., from here forward.

Up 4 with 5 games to play. Buffalo and OU (both 4 games back) are the only teams that can mathematically catch us. Everyone else is 6 games back, or more. One more Akron win guarantees a tie. Two more Akron wins guarantees outright Regular Season Title. I don't think we need to look at any other scenarios. I think we have near insurmountable odds of winning at least 2 of our last 5 games.

Keith applauded him for that defensive effort in the postgame. I don't remember the numbers that Steve French mentioned, but he said something about Noah having an unbelievably low number of Turnovers over the last few games. This is probably, like some people have suggested, not the same Noah offensively as he looked like he would be after his Freshman year. Not sure if the injury has anything to do with it. But for me, I just want to see him be aggressive with those open outside shots, like he was doing at the beginning of the year. I thought he passed up several last night, and that's not the first time I noticed him putting the ball on the floor when he could take an uncontested shot.
-
I'm glad people are talking about Josh's defense last night. He seemed to take on the challenge of picking up Toledo's point guys near half court on several occasions, and really showed some great effort. I've said it many times. Lack of defensive talent can be compensated for with DESIRE. This team simply needs to maximize what they have defensively with a little more effort. The longer bench rotations should help. But for God's sake, show me you can do it more frequently than just when the game is on the line !!

I went back and looked at the play by play. That 2nd half run where we went from 11 down to 9 up was a 26-6 run that covered about 8 minutes. It may have been the best combined offense/defense stretch we've played all year. Antino's Toe: At one point late in the game, I saw him get up off the floor and he looked like he was grimacing a bit as he started to walk. I wondered what was up. He said in the postgame that he thought about sitting out last night. If that had happened, we might have lost. But, I'm hoping the fact that he said he wanted to sit out a game to rest it indicates that it's not something chronic. Hopefully 3 days takes care of the problem. But, there's far worse issues one could have. Toe injuries don't usually hamper movement too much. like an ankle injury would, but they can be very painful and irritating to play on.

Screw the Canadians. We're the best team in the league, and THEY have to beat US.
-
LOL...they did play it about 5 min. before the game started.
-
I'd pull him for the sake of the team until he shows that can start making more free throws. But, I understand what he's trying to do.
-
Keith just said in the postgame that Terry wanted to pull him before those one-and-ones, but Keith wanted him to stay in. He said something like....He's going to need to make those shots down the stretch, and he wants to show him he has confidence in him.
-
What a Run going from down 11 to up 9, and virtually close the door on Toledo. But gosh, Big Dog missed the front end of THREE one-and-one opportunities down the stretch. Keith was even pulling him at the end on OFFENSIVE inbound plays, which I don't believe I have seen yet this year.
-
The shots are there, they just aren't going in. And we're getting outrebounded. I'm getting worried.

That's why the City isn't doing it. Something big needs to surface (another sports tenant?) to change how they stand on this. And even if that happens, we'll simply be using the City's Arena. The U of A will do it themselves at some point years down the line, maybe even out of necessity, once the JAR is 40-50 years old. We won't have a choice. But unfortunately it won't be the grand facility some are expecting. It will be something closer to what Bowling Green built, as opposed to what Cleveland State built. I wouldn't read too much into the new Mayor's desire to work with the University. It's all about money. After 500 posts on this topic, I'd sure love to hear some new information, rather than people's opinions about what leaders SHOULD be doing. I always like to feel like some kind of breakthrough is on the horizon somewhere. But, I'm not getting that from anyone at the City, County or University right now.

Thanks a lot Kreed. So was I. And I still have the album in an old box in my basement.

We'd have a 5 game lead with 5 games to play. Pretty impressive. I just hope that's more about how good we are, rather than how average the rest of the league is this year. But even if it's the latter, I still don't think anyone here would have predicted a 12-1 record on Feb. 14th.

That was pretty funny reading their song references. But did you have to pick the oldest imaginable picture of the Eagles that you could find? I had clothes like that. I'm really feeling old now. I'm just glad you didn't show the bottoms of their pants.
-
Ya think he's wanting a shot at getting Johnson's son ? His history seems to indicate that this might be why he's doing this. Frankly, I think Mike should just encourage his son to go to his alma mater

Well, I'll be darned. One of the play-in games that year was indeed a 12/12 game. Alright. Time for me to take a break from this tournament maze. My head is spinning
