MD Zip. Thanks for laying that out for us. Great work. Wow. I had no idea that we ever got to 53 votes. I thought it was about half of that amount.
-
Yes, you have all of that right. I was wondering if anyone knows how our number of votes progressed from week to week as the winning streak progressed.
-
Yep, that's a little disappointing that we didn't pick up any additional support after a good week. I asked this earlier, but can anyone recall how our number of votes progressed in the polls during our 2013 win streak?
-
I'll be interested to see how this works out. It's certainly logical to think that if we "look" like everyone else, the local media may have more desire to use our footage, and the local fans may take more notice. That might prove to be the biggest breakthrough to our growth as an athletic program.

I just always wonder why you go to college for several years....whether you like being in class or not....and get so close to finishing a degree but walk away. For the guys that are going to be pro athletes, it's not probably going to have much of a financial impact on their lives. But for the guys who are simply just hoping to make some kind of paycheck as a pro athlete, I'll assume that it's a big mistake, most of the time. Heck, I hated going to class, hated studying, and hated taking tests. I'm sure I'm not alone. But, there was no way I was walking away once I had a few years in the books.

Channel 3 tonight (Sunday, Jan 22nd)
skip-zip replied to Zip_ME87's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
I stayed up to watch it. First, I was shocked it was such a long segment. I expected the usual....just a short blurb. Secondly, I was happy it talked about the success of the entire program instead of just the success of one local guy. That kind of publicity for Akron Soccer from the Cleveland Media is not something we get except for once in a blue moon. Kudos to WKYC. -
I've been to the Dayton games. Nobody there considers it a "play in" for the #11 seeded at large contenders. Sell-out crowd and a great atmosphere. Plus, only a few hours drive for Akron fans. If our alternative is to be playing as a #11 in Dayton, instead of getting a "2nd round" game as a #14 against a #3, it's not a big deal to me. Sadly, they will not be getting invited to the tournament for the 2nd straight year.

In the words of Mr. Dunn......No Doubt About it. I agree. I can't believe someone posted that it's not possible when we just won won 14 of our last 16 games and already have a #39 RPI. If we lose another game or two in the next month, then I'll agree that's highly unlikely. But that hasn't happened.
-
As I said previously, I agree with you on a lot of what you are saying. I just think it's silly to reach a conclusion about the conference getting one bid in mid-January. And let me clarify that you said that the MAC will only get one bid. Now that you say nobody else besides Akron would get at At-Large, I agree with you 100%. There's definitely no other team with a path to a high enough win total. I'm not sure if Akron needs to win every remaining conference game to get in. 28 or 29 might be enough. Nobody knows. We probably know that 26 is not enough because we've been down that road. But the only thing I said is that we're certainly IN with 30. So right now, we have a path to that number.

I've already made it clear what the YSU loss meant to our chances. But that was before we ran through the next 18 game with only 2 losses to Top-10 teams. Read my post. I only responded when someone came out with the "Akron has no chance" already, because it is indeed too early to see how this turns out.
-
Kent won 28 games in 2008, and was a #9 Seed. That's well within the pool of At-Large participants. Let me just say this. I only responded to that previous post because I think it's ridiculous to be looking at a 16-3 Akron team right now, in mid-January, and proclaiming the "a MAC team is not getting an At Large" crap. I'll wait until we have a couple more losses before I do that. But, I am not putting any games in the loss column until they happen. Right now, we're better than every team in this league by 2 games, and I hope it doesn't end.
-
Way too early to say that, unless you're adding losses that aren't there yet. At only 3 losses, it would surely be a lock. I agree with part of what you said, meaning that we don't play enough top teams. And we don't beat enough top teams. I'll also contend that the YSU loss is a killer. But on the flip side, playing 2 Top-10 teams this year has helped the RPI (currently 39 - see above). Have we ever been in the Top 40 in mid-January? And winning two neutral court tournaments might help too. Besides all of the negatives that work against us every year (and there's plenty), I've always said that going "close to undefeated" would trump all of that. And I'm not ready to start adding more losses quite yet. 30 Wins and we're IN for sure. Take it to the bank.

In many cases, they don't technically "buy" them, so that's why they probably don't care. If you're spending thousands in advertising with the U of A, and someone throws in Lounge Passes and Tickets for you, and you don't really care about Akron Basketball, they sit on a shelf in an office somewhere all season.

There's a lot that can be done with all of the empty Blue seats, but giving those perks to the elderly donors and corporate sponsors is not going to change, unfortunately. I believe 3,600 was the actual number. And that included all of the people who walked in, collected Bobbleheads, and left. But I still think that appeared to be the best GA of the season thus far.
-
I wish I could see a clip of the segment. It looks like SportsCenter, because it's news, is about the only thing that ESPN does not provide a link to see a Replay.
-
True. But I was indicating that he can still be valuable to us as a long range shooter, right now, if he can get back to the form he showed earlier this year.
-
Yes, lets not overplay this situation. Don't get me wrong. I'm not crazy about him right now. And I also think he's very limited in what he can do for us at this point in his career. But, he does have the ability to hit a lot of shots in a game from long range. He just needs to work himself out of this slump.
-
More than anything else, I have to applaud the defensive effort tonight. Antino, especially, was noticeably emotionally into the game. I thought that extra effort created a lot of those EMU turnovers and 38% shooting that really made the difference in this game. I want that desire to continue from here on out.
-
That seems to be the most logical response so far, to me. I was just wondering what everyone else was thinking. Keep in mind that regardless of the fact that we only have one vote right now, there's only 7 schools between us and #25. A few losses here and there over last week and this weekend could certainly move us much closer. I was also wondering if anyone remembers the particulars of our big winning streak back in 2013. At what point did we really start to pick up votes? And didn't we eventually get up near twenty or so?
-
Not trying to jump ahead here, but has anyone else pondered this.... We could beat the OTHER best two teams in the East and West divisions within a few days. And another AP Poll comes out on Monday after two potential big victories. With a few losses around the country, how close can we get, or can we get into the Top 25 by Monday?
-
Jimond is definitely someone with the ability to get behind the zone and score, which is the real backbreaker when you play that kind of defense. Hit some 3-pointers early, and that Zone will spread out a bit and might allow that.
-
This team is still making a lot of defensive mistakes. But this is the night we put it all together. I expect everyone to be focused. You won't see another first half like we played against OU. It's time to take over and continue what we started last year when we won the conference easily by 2 games. I keep having flashbacks to that MAC Quarterfinal game last year, and can be sure that Keith has made sure that this game will not be a repeat.
-
I bet if he brought them to an Akron game and was signing them and giving them away, they'd be gone in a matter of minutes.
-
Maybe I have several decades of history to make such a prediction? Including what happened on Tuesday? Better yet, maybe someone sees this and realizes that providing more help would make the fans happier? Yes, I wasn't happy that I missed the most exciting part of the game last week (the scoring run to start the 2nd half) while watching people scramble through lists of season ticket holders to hand out mugs. Don't heed my advisory. I don't care. Enjoy the game.
-
Let me guess. There will only be 2 people there while hundreds are entering the gates. They won't know which bobbleheads are in which boxes. I'll make sure I account for at least a 10 minute delay getting to my seats.
