Of the supposed "finalists"... Who's your choice
eguins replied to InTheZone's topic in Akron Zips Football
Is Mark Stoops the 4th candidate or is that just speculation? Two years ago, Mark Stoops was very close to becoming the head coach at Youngstown State. YSU was going to offer him between $250,000-280,000/year to coach here. Many websites and even sources close to the Stoops family said it was down to whether he got the Defensive Coordinator position at Florida State, which paid close to $500,000 according to report. In the end, he got that position and has done pretty well down there. As you can see, money seemed to be a sticking point with him. Source: http://www.vindy.com/news/2009/dec/01/land...-ysu-athletics/ I would say Narduzzi is a good choice. The guy's father coached at Youngstown State, but the young Narduzzi is not too fond of YSU for firing his father. He played here one season before transferring to Rhode Island. It got us Tressel so how anyone can still be upset about that is beyond me! Did you guys read the article on Akron-Narduzzi in the Vindicator from Sunday? http://www.vindy.com/news/2011/dec/11/nard...leys-toughness/ -
FootballScoop.com, a much better source, says otherwise.

He has turned around the worst FCS program. Would not be a bad guy to go after. However he failed to get his VERY talented team in the playoffs this year. I don't see another 6-5 season for his team next year.
-
Point taken, and it looks like they took a slight step back in that regards with Beck in charge in 2011. It's Martinez who is pretty imaginative If we're looking for a coordinator who will (eventually) score lots of points, put an exciting team on the field, and (hopefully) put people in the Info, I still like Campbell the best of the names I've seen so far. I like Campbell too. But he is very young and it is doubtful that he would have a list of contacts to put together a great staff. Who ever gets Campbell will put in a year or two while he gets up to speed. Any first year head coach will be learning on the job. I am not sure we have the patience for that at this time. The guys I think are ready for the job are: 1. Pat Hill 2. Paul Winters 3. Chuck Martin The next group of guys with potential (possibly more than the first group) are: 1. Matt Campbell 2. Mike Bajakian I am sure there will be more names come up...I am open to someone I have never heard of. Can't go wrong with a Mooney guy.

Link: http://www.vindy.com/news/2011/dec/06/ysu-...ff-teams-ahead/ There are have been rumors over the past two weeks that YSU coach Eric Wolford has applied to be an offensive line coach for new Ohio State coach Urban Meyer and that he was a candidate for the vacant head coaching position at Akron. Both false, Wolford said Monday. “I took the YSU job because it was an opportunity to be a head coach and an opportunity to restore the program and get back to being in the playoffs and winning championships and all the things we set out to do,” said Wolford, who is 9-13 in two years at YSU. “I’m committed to being here.”

And Milwaukee is blowing out DePaul. Who would have thought the Horizon would be 2-0 against the Big East in one night! Crazy year in college basketball. The talent level between the mid-majors and the big conferences is diminishing!
-
They added that Anderson after the 64-61 loss to YSU on Thursday. He played against CSU in that loss. Holman dressed today but is still out. When he gets back, Detroit will really become a force. But yes, very nice win for you guys, especially by 18!
-
He is often brought up in FBS coaching discussions. Matthews has his James Madison team in Fargo to take on #2 North Dakota State tomorrow on ESPN3. I think he is one to consider, especially if he loses this weekend which is expected. However they are expecting to go to FBS in two seasons with their massive new stadium:

K.C. Keeler from Delaware Mickey Matthews from James Madison Two coaches I think would be terrific for you guys. Both have been successful in the FCS ranks.

Interesting tweet: http://twitter.com/#!/letsgoguins/stat...435920656871425 NCAA MBB: Northeast Ohio Mid-Major's: Cleveland State 7-1, Youngstown State 5-1, Can't State 4-1, Akron 3-3. 19-6 overall. Hope we all can keep it up! Go Northeast Ohio!

at this point i want to just for the lolz at eguins We can hire him so he leaves YSU, then fire him the next day to leave them without a coach. Just to piss of those losers. Say what you want about Akron but at least we don't pretend to be some football powerhouse like the penguins do. Least one buckeyeplanet.com poster seems to think Wolford interviewed with Meyer in Columbus Monday. However people inside the athletic department state otherwise as he was in Youngstown having one-on-one meetings with each player on the roster. He was exiting town today to get complete this 2012 recruiting class. But I still think Shane Montgomery is going to be a hot commodity. MAYBE not as a head coach, but definitely as an offensive coordinator. His gameplan at Michigan State was a sight to see as we just chewed up clock and got first down after first down. We only scored 6 points, but a missed XP and missed FG cost us a few additional points. Hell we had more offense vs. MSU than OSU. I honestly forgot he coached for you guys before coming to YSU. Bricillo has turned out solid for us. Did you guys like him?

Why did Akron stop the series in 1994? At least we still play in basketball!!! Can't wait for the game in a few weeks at the JAR!

League Rule: MAC schools are not permitted to play away games at 1-AA stadiums. YSU will not play the Zips unless it is a home-home. The Zips have offered to host YSU, and YSU has declined. End of story. If this was such a rule, please explain to myself and ALL YSU fans why Ball State is playing an AWAY game at Illinois State (same conference as YSU) in the next two seasons???
-
I offered my two cents. I really could have ripped on you guys about the whole Tressel-to-Akron thing, but I chose not to. I can assure you YSU will not only be a playoff team and make a run for a title next year, but Montgomery will be a hot commodity in coaching circles. And I would just love to see how you guys would do up in the FargoDome against North Dakota State. We beat them in week 10 when they were 9-0 and #1 in the country. Of course we blew it a week later by losing to 1-9 Missouri State. Had we won that game, we would have been playing at noon on ESPNU vs. James Madison. Hope we can meet again on the playing field one day, but until then, we will have to duke it out in recruiting. Best of luck in your coaching search. To be honest with you guys, there is no reason you should not be able to field a winner in the MAC with those facilities you have. In my eyes good coaches help, but great recruiters can do wonders. I think that is the way to go for you guys.

With talent, he has proven he CAN succeed at YSU.
-
I would recommend YSU Offensive Coordinator and former Miami (OH) head coach Shane Montgomery. Let me tell you guys something, he is an offensive mastermind and has helped bring in some quality recruits to Youngstown State. YSU led the Missouri Valley Football conference in offense this past year and was top 5 in all of FCS football. Definitely think he would be throwing his resume in for this job, however I do NOT want to see him go!
-
You are NOT getting Eric Wolford. Thank You.
-
OK there bud. Keep him. Also, why the post that seems so troll-like when ZN is celebrating at the removal of The Grim Reaper? We wouldn't do that on a YSU board when your program is down. The ONLY reason I posted was because his name was on that list in the poll and it left me scratching my head. I think you would agree it would make no sense for Wolford to leave YSU for Akron, correct? And look at all those Youngstown guys on that list, can't go wrong there. At least you have the right idea, though I doubt you get Tressel.
-
With all due respect Akron fans, you are not going to get Eric Wolford of Youngstown State. The ONLY job I ever see him leaving for is Kansas State for Bill Snyder, where he graduated from in the early 90s. I can't see how moving from YSU to Akron is a step up for this guy, that has our program moving in the right direction and will likely be a preseason top 3 team in the MVFC next season. Best of luck in your coaching search.

Their other big man Minnerath is out for the year. They were the pre-season HL favorites and may now finish in the bottom of the HL. If Akron loses this one, shame on them. Zips by a dozen.

YSU: 96 Can't STATE: 126 AKRON: 196 That certain troll says HELLO! This is the way it used to be in the 90s! ;)

Quaison Osborne commits to Youngstown State over Akron, Ball State, Can't, and Lake Erie College: http://letsgoguins.com/recruiting/football...borne-ysu-offer YSU picked up 3 commits in the past week after beating #1 North Dakota State on the road last week.

Keeping tabs on the Zips non-conference opponents
eguins replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
YSU 3-0 for the first time since 2000-2001 season. Beat UC Riverside in OT at home 53-49. Excited for our meeting against you guys this year. If we have a good record heading into that one, I anticipate us actually bring a couple hundred fans. Hopefully we don't let you tie it with no time left and beat us in OT. Best of luck this season. -
no they are awful. they never deserved to be in this game Valpo is not awful. They may look awful with their ugly ass style of play the Drew's instill in them year-after-year, but I've seen them do this to YSU numerous times! Ever since they joined the Horizon League, every game against YSU has been like this, only we are in Akron's shoes and blow it vs. them every time!
-
They are likely using Youngstown's Facilities because they are owned by Denise DeBartolo York and John York, The DeBartolos are from that area.Alex is a great kid and helping out with my Fighting Irish... DeBartlo's are big in Youngstown, as is noted in the previous post. If they aren't using the stadium, they will be using the WATTS which is nearing completion, 98% complete. Worth noting the DeBartolo's joined Jim Tressel and Anthony Cafaro in donating to the $12 million facility: Great practice facilities are the kiss of death. The only thing worse is to build a great new stadium. Welcome to the abyss. We aren't falling into the abyss here in Youngstown. Although we are probably a year away from competing for a conference/fcs crown, this year is a huge year for our program...I like you guys by 17 over VMI Saturday.
