  1. very informative. I agree 100% with Dave... Games, especially for a running program like YSU, are won in the trenches. Our weak spot coming into this year is our OL.... I wasn't disagreeing with Dave. I was applauding him for command of sports slang and his willingness to explain something as vague as "in the trenches." If I was agreeing with Dave then I was obviously agreeing with you lol!

  3. This is especially true in baseball and tennis where 7 on 7 drills result in the field seeming fairly empty or the court quite full, respectively. Found out that Youngstown State was never stopped on offense, but considering Nicely threw 6 touchdown's I find it hard to believe Akron was ever stopped on offense either. Sounds like each team's defense was pretty ugly.
  4. I did not post this to brag about the team, I posted this to inform you guys of something I had read. Did want to point out that with various coaching contact rules during the summer, that coaches were most likely not involved in this whatsoever.
  5. I posted back last year that CSU beat Akron in a basketball scrimmage and I got the same response. Although it does not mean much, it is a good idea how each team's offense's and defense's look against the back's, tight end's, and wide receivers and vice versa.
  6. The 7 on 7 scrimmage today in Akron against Youngstown State ended in a tie: http://twitter.com/letsgoguins/status/19106108918 http://twitter.com/b_ross27/status/19105033796
  7. If any of those stations are on Clear Channel then chances are you can find them on the I-Heart-Radio App for Iphone and I presume for Droid. I know you can hear YSU on the that app since we are on Clear Channel in Youngstown. Check into it.
  8. I disagree on both counts. The MAC needs to dump Temple at whatever cost (there is no cost, they don't bring in anything that improves the MAC's finances or reputation). They are not worth the money spent feeding another mouth or travelling to and from Philly. They don't help attendance when MAC schools play them at home, they don't get us a better TV contract, and they screw up our scheduling so we can't play rivals that people actually care about seeing us play. And how can they be our best program? They haven't even won their own division, let alone the conference, since joining. They don't even have enough support to have their own football stadium, instead they have to rent one from the NFL. There is so little support for football that their fans are willing to go independant or drop down to 1-AA, or drop football altogether, instead of bringing their hoops program to the MAC. If football was important to them, they would bring hoops instead of risking getting kicked out. Why should the MAC allow them to continue to leech off us with nothing in return but a few token basketball games? Temple football was 9-4 overall last season. They beat Navy. They were 6-1 in the MAC, losing only @ Athens. They were up 21-7 vs UCLA in the 3rd quarter of their bowl game. They ran out of gas, but they had a good showing. The cost to travel to/from Philly vs. any other place the Zips would travel is negligible. No opponent helps the attendance of any MAC program. MAC attendance blows regardless of the opponent. No opponent helps us get a better TV contract... and who the hell wants to watch MAC football on the TV anyhow? The support for Temple football grows at the program experiences success. That's not unique to Temple. You'd see the Zips attendance rise if we'd go 9-4 for a few seasons. What "rivals" do you want to see play in lieu of Temple? Would you have rather watched a crappy Miami OH team play the Zips in 2009 than a quality Temple program? I liked watching Temple kick our ass last year (56-17). They thoroughly out-classed us at every position. It gives me hope that we can do the same (in the MAC) one day soon. Temple was no better than us a couple years ago. It doesn't matter what Temple has done, overall, in MAC football since they became a member. What matters is the direction they are headed. And since they have joined the MAC, they have headed one direction -- up. Playing in an NFL stadium is a plus, not a negative. That stadium is awesome. Didn't they schedule a home game with Penn State? That beats the hell out of Gardner Webb. People on the MACbbs board are, for the most part, idiots. You will figure that out one day. Temple is a top MAC football program. They are talented and fun to watch. They are one of only a thimble full of MAC football programs who can not only escape embarrassment when stepping up in competition, but actually have a shot at winning. And the fact that they give the MAC 5 basketball games per year is a gift from the Gods. It allows MAC fans to see Top 25 programs in their own venue. That would never happen otherwise. +1 Cap'n. Temple is in no way "leeching" off of the MAC. How can they be? They are already a successful football program within the conference, their basketball team has great history and their location is in a primetime media area. How can they be leeching off us? There is no tradition-rich or traditionally winning program in the MAC. Who or what exactly is Temple gaining other than having Akron, Can't, Miami, the Michigans to beat up on? I for one welcome the competition. Maybe Akron can attain Temple's win-loss record within the next several seasons. Temple definitely improved as the year went on. Their 9-4 record definitely made people forget about their week 1 loss to cross town "rival" Villanova: http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/reca...015&prov=ap
  9. I have yet to hear anything official from Illinois State that would make it appear they are considering jumping to the FBS.
  10. They were 10-1 in the regular season. Their only loss was on the road to Marshall 31-28. http://siusalukis.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl...sched-2009.html Western Kentucky is just horrible. SIU just built a new stadium, but it will seat only 11,000 or 12,000 so they won't be moving up either.
  11. That may make sense, but I hate the idea of more "directional" schools!!!! Southern Illinois would have killed Akron, Cant State, and most teams in the MAC last year they were that good. I expect them to beat Illinois this year, they are that good.
  12. This ship has sailed. The reputation of the MAC is going to be even worse after realignment unless it becomes part of a lower division. No self-respecting conference would invite a MAC school to join. With all the talk of these mega-conferences, some in the FCS are community are wondering if there is a possibility for a 3rd division to be created. Something along the lines of this: 1. BCS - Mega Conferences battle it out in a playoff for the BCS National Title 2. I-A - Non BCS conferences would compete at this level, perhaps add Colonial Athletic Association and Missouri Valley Conference to this level due to stadium size and overall competitiveness of each league. 3. I-AA - Leave the rest of the I-AA conferences for the FCS National Title. Link: http://www.championshipsubdivision.com/for...tart=25#p302637
  13. We were a big boy in the 90s when we were denied into the MAC by two programs, which will remain nameless.
  14. It is official: The Vindicator reports it is a done-deal.
  15. In 2010, YSU is having a local high school band play at halftime of each of our home games. And we are not talking about small 50 member bands, we are talking about the 250-300 member bands from Boardman, Poland, etc. That one is an easy way to boost attendance because family and friends from those schools will buy tickets in order to see their kids play at halftime at a college game.
  16. Check this out: http://www.letsgoguins.com/columns/footbal...-ua-Can't State-and-ysu At least we aren't as bad as Can't. How they remain in the FBS is beyond me.
  17. The only reason I would see YSU backing out of the deal because as it stands now, they will have to have three road games this year to Akron, Can't, and CSU, and just one home game against CSU. They should schedule where there would be two home games and two away games for each school. However I hope they stay in it because I enjoyed these games!!! Maybe STO or FSN Ohio could pick these up. Considering STO is all over CSU, I am sure they can make a deal happen.
  18. It is more than just winning, it is winning consistently. When Stambaugh opened in the mid 80s it wasn't packed until we had 2-3 winning seasons and made the playoffs. If I were Akron, I would be striving to win 7-8 games a year and beating one bigtime school on your schedule. If you could do that, that is without a doubt a good start. Promotions only get you so far.
  19. A link to three sentences that has the original link that was posted in the top of this thread a month ago?!? You guys are really on top the situation. Well here is some inside information for you. We are playing NC State this upcoming season. Good luck finding that anywhere else on the web.
  20. We are watching the situation here in Youngstown as well. This is what I found: http://www.letsgoguins.com/columns/basketb...io-still-intact
  21. As a person that actually played in a OHSAA State Championship game, I strongly recommend they actually keep them in Canton and Massillon because they are the most intimate high school environment's you will find in Ohio. Playing at Columbus = Empty 'Shoe Playing at Cincy = Half Filled Nippert Playing at Akron/Can't = Half Filled as well We need to remember that these are the HIGH SCHOOL State Championship games! Keep them at high school stadiums. The folks from Western Ohio in the M.A.C. do not mind the trek at all. They travel VERY well!
  22. Missouri Valley Football Conference
  23. Devoe Torrence is better than any YSU running back there or coming. Regardless he is a linebacker first and foremost and eventually will figure that out. Also, I dont see him as this "bum" as some people are calling him. He is a tremendous talent that just hasn't got his chance to shine, like i said, when he figures out what his true position is he will be a star. Same thing I was thinking. There is no way YSU has any running backs anywhere near as talented as him haha I can't help but laugh when you come around here and try to act like YSU is so superior to akron. Trust me the worst players on Akron's team would be stars for the penguins... With all due respect, Mr. Adaris Bellamy is a 4-star recruit with SEC and Big East offers and he is coming to YSU as a freshmen. After USF pulled his scholarship when Holtz came to town, he was set to sign with the Cincinnati Bearcats but one thing prevented that from happening: Big East rule prohibiting a recruit to sign with a Big East team after previously signing with another. This kid will likely be in the running for the FCS Heisman, the Payton Award, by the time he is done here. Anyways we got our Spring Game tomorrow, enthusiasm is at levels we have not seen since Tressel with Coach Wolford, and we are expecting a great season. We ought to compare the attendance's at each Spring Game and see how that turn's out! PS: Yes, InTheZone is exactly correct. From top to bottom you guys have much more depth than us, but I can assure you we have some kids playing here that would also be able to compete there. Worth mentioning Allen Jones broke all of Alex Allen's records at Ursuline. Hope to meet up with you guys on the gridiron one of these days!
  24. I beg to differ. He is talented, but I saw a lot better in Northeast Ohio the past few years. And yes, I do believe Allen Jones is better than Torrence.
  25. Akron and Can't both lost to the Horizon League's #3 team at home in Green Bay. Butler was far and away better than Green Bay this season. At home, you could give Butler a game like YSU did.. It was tied with 7:00 left, but on the road you stand no chance at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
