Second round of conference expansion is beginning.
GP1 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
You lost me here. Nobody will exit one of these conferences after getting into one. The conferences are setting up huge buy-out clauses right now. The decisions these schools make the next few months will live with them for at least 50 years.MAYBE if Missouri is getting destroyed in the SEC, they will want easier competition in a few years and move to the Big Ten. Not likely, but that could be an option. -

How about WVU and L'Ville? That's how I read the stories. My esteemed colleague from Green should know it doesn't always have to be one or the other. -

Looks like WVU to Big XII. I guess schools with low academic standards like Baylor and Texas will have another friend to play football with.Want to know why teams like Missouri, WVU, etc. are passing on the Big Ten? It has nothing to do with academic standards and the Big Ten passing on them. If it was, Nebraska wouldn't get in. It's because the league is crap and schools want to be part of something bigger, not smaller. Adding Nebraska to the league does nothing more than add an average Big 12 team to the league. Granted, Nebraska is still better than 90% of the Big Ten, but the rest of the league isn't very good.Academics have noting to do with the moves conferences are making. You honestly believe that WVU and Missouri took a "pass" on joining the Big Ten? Wow. They would kill to get an invite.Maybe pass isn't the right word. They looked at better options. Missouri was always rumored to join the Big Ten and they didn't because the SEC is a better league. WVU didn't go crawling on their hands and knees to the Big Ten. Outside of Notre Dame, future Big Ten expansion will be adding garbage to an already bad league. Certainly not a Leader in college football. -

I have blinders on? I'm not the one who wants the AD to go after only one guy. Only Tressel can do well at Akron?...I simply can't bring myself to believe that. Lots of guys could do well at Akron...this is called being open minded. Brookhart won a MAC Championship...that's called doing great. We need winning to come to town, not the circus.

One can talk himself into a lot of things. Something about Rome burning.......

Faust was plucked from a high school program. ND played about a gazillion times more difficult schedule than tosu. It's easy to win against the MAC and the crap that is the Big Ten. Just show up with bought players, beat a crappy schedule and it becomes pretty easy to make a national championship game. This is a Zips board, not the Hire Jim Tressel board, so let's talk Zips. A better example of what Faust is, in relation to his time at ND, is how an AD can make a horrible mistake in hiring someone. It isn't Faust's fault ND hired him. It isn't Coach I's fault UofA hired him. The fault lies with the AD. Our current problems lie with our AD's decision making.Tressel will never be the coach at Akron.

In honor of Beavis and Butthead coming back on TV this week, I'd just like to say.....Uhhhhhhh he said sniff....Dude! I had almost forgotte that. It is going to be epic. Just that 5 minutes of them watching Jersey Shore slayed me.My wife saw a scene where there are watching 16 and Pregnant and Butthead says to Beavis, "Hey Beavis. I just realized this girl isn't a bad actor, she's a bad person." Our society is so in need of this show it isn't even funny. Thursday nights on MTV.

On a MAC level, I believe if the University had ANY clue, Faust could have done much better than what everyone saw at the end at Akron. Faust had nothing and had the highest percentage winning season in school D-1A history. What we don't know about Tressel is if he can win without cheating. Anywhere he goes, the NCAA is going to watch him like a hawk...which is why he'll never coach again. For those of you who think Tressel would come to Akron....dream on. It's about the same chance of Urban Meyer going to tosu.Emphasis on the word NOTHING. We didn't even have grass practice fields back then, even though we played many opponents with grass fields. There had to be high schools that were better equipped than us to elevate to 1-A. I think we've only now begun to understand what Gerry accomplished with meager resources at the absolute infancy of our D-1A era.Even worse, the University had no idea as to what to do. People can say what they want about Faust, but he was at ND. He saw what needed to be done...maybe he didn't know exactly how to get there, but he knew what it should look like.

Browns fans have been doing this for years. How is that working out? They have big egos, but they are also smart enough to see an empty stadium and understand there is a problem. The time you spend making signs could be better spend doing just about anything else.

I wonder how many pages were in the NCAA rulebook 40 years ago. They can regulate salmon on bagels, but they can't figure out how to get more money to those making the money for them.1903 the Wright brothers flew the first plane...1927 Charles Lindbergh crosses the Atlantic. A little over 40 years later, man lands on the moon. Seems to be easier to build more advanced flying ships than changing the NCAA.Bye, bye NCAA. You did it to yourself.

This is a very good post. It's not the losing...It's the not being competitive. When I go to a game, I want to see teams compete at a high level. The Zips don't do that right now and it is a killer for any fan because the hope is gone. Tom Jackson said something last night about being upset when he watches a game and one team or both isn't living up to the "professional standard". I'm sure a lot of Zips fans feel upset the Zips aren't living up to even "MAC standards". It's the best reason to not go to a game.

I used to get notes like this all the time from people on this board. Never responded. I got sick of the notices so I turned off my PM function.it doesn't bother me in the least....but something keeps urging me to teach morons like this a little life lessonJust enjoy the game. There are too many morons in the world to correct all of them. It's a losing battle. Go Zips!

I am relaxed. I thought my response was pretty balanced. And, I'm still not buying any MAC "building process".

None of them had access to Tressel's payroll.

Sunday Special: Time for MAC to step up and recruit Stark
GP1 replied to Hilltopper's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
This coach is a jerk and is killing any chances his kids have of being recruited. Not only that, the guy should know better. Go to any high school football game and the parents and fans will believe there are 5-6 D-1A players on their team. If they are lucky, there may be one, but that's OK because they are fans and parents. A decent high school coach should know what a D-1A player looks like. He's acting like a parent. He should in fact have serious conversations with these kids parents about their abilities and what their expectations should be.Think of how stupid this logic is. Akron needs to recruit more in Stark County so the kids can get more scholarship offers. Does that sound like a good use of resources for UofA? Stupid....just plain stupid. Also, if the kids are any good, they get found and recruited. It's too easy to get information on someone because technology is so good. If every school is taking a pass on the a kid, it is because the kid doesn't have it, not because the local university isn't recruiting him. What a lot of people in NE Ohio don't want to admit is high school football around Stark Co. has fallen off quite a bit in recent years. Massillon? Every kid I knew on the team from Massillon when I was in school wasn't very good and certainly not nearly as good as they thought they were. -
Are we trying to run up the middle at all? Sometimes when a team is struggling to run, it can be helpful to just line up and go forward with limited thinking. On OLineman doesn't have to be the most talented to smash up on someone.
-
I don't have a problem with running to the short side of the field if they can make the blocking numbers work. I don't see the games, but if we are having trouble blocking the strong safety, then lining up strong to the field and running backside isn't a bad idea if they can make it work. At some point, player have to perform. OU has always been good at counting the numbers and running away from the strong side. Looks like we aren't as good as them at doing it...or much else.
-
Is that all?Let's assume that with attrition, there are 4.5 years worth of players on a team. That's 19 people per class year with 85 scholarships. We play a four man front so we use 9 linemen counting the 5 offensive linemen. That's 41% of the starting 22 players on offense and defense. Only recruiting six is between 1 and 2 fewer than we need to recruit just to keep the numbers even. TW might want to rethink that answer.

Dave WalkoskiThis is the kind of guy we need. Long time coach at MAC level and in the MAC. Comes from the Toledo program which was successful. If not him, would Toledo Tom want to get back in coaching?
-
I don't want the guy from App State. I was just trying to tie JZ84's example to him.
