Zips football history book

I could care less whether or not Tressel wrote the forward. I guess the only argument against it is Dennison being the best choice. The argument against that is a book lasts forever and 25 years from now Tressel will no longer be at tOSU and Dennison will only be remembered as the guy who once coached at Akron. Using Tressel is more forward looking. In the end, publishers publish to make money. Like it or not, the Tressel name will sell books. In fact, if I published the book, I would mention that Tressel wrote the forward or introduction or whatever he wrote on the cover. Seems we are making a mountain out of a molehill to me. The NCAA is the real enemy, not larger conferences and the teams within them.

The thing is that Heisman isn't currently the face of another program. He's not out there doing everything he can to promote another school, one that he left Akron looking for "greener pastures".I can badmouth Tressel all I want. The more he gets involved in this stuff, the more Akron is viewed as a little school that he's patronizing because he has a token connection to it. It makes us look worse, blatently trying to cash in on somebody who's shouldn't even be thinking about us while he has another job. To think that this will create more Akron fans is absurd. Nobody will stat following Akron even casually, if anyting it will draw more people to OSU while putting Akron even more as a red-headed stepchild of a Big Ten school.I don't care if he cheers for the program or follows us or whatever. He needs to stop this. He can cheer for the Zips all he wants once he is retired and takes the nuts off his chest.

Yeah, I am sure all the Ohio football fans that would potentially buy this book give a rats ass what Jim Dennison has to say. 95% of them have never heard of the guy. I know it breaks your heart, but everyone knows Jim Tressel.
So zip37 says "AMEN" to that, huh? Pretty amazing. I though he respected Dennison? To me it reads like a hard bitch slap to the Zips fans who would be interested in what Dennison had to say. If zip37 doesn't give a rat's ass about what Dennison has to say, then I may have to rethink my position too.
To the person that mentioned Jason Taylor.......I hear you on that one. He would have been a great one. The problem is, not everyone knows him unless they follow the NFL.
News f.l.a.s.h. -- There is no one purchasing a book detailing the History of Akron Football that doesn't know Jason Taylor. It is no wonder some people on this board dislike Ohio State fans. How can you not, when they enter and Akron Zips Message Board to throw tantrums towards Akron Zips fans? Someone wrote a book on the history of Akron Zips football, but OSU fan's ego says the target audience for that book doesn't "give a rat's ass what Jim Dennison has to say?" Makes perfect sense. People that buy a book written about University of Akron Football History MUST want to read what Jim Tressel thinks. Not Jim Dennison. Yep.Call Zips fans Morons...crybabies...whatever. You've apparently got some enthusiastic support in high places on Zips Nation when you do so. Knock yourself out.I have 15...20...who knows how many good friends who are also Ohio State fans. Many of them participate on the board. They all respect that this is a Zips fan site. I wish all OSU fans did likewise. I remain disappointed that a book on Akron football History needed to resort to a foreword from an Ohio State coach to sell books. But it isn't my book. If it was, Dennison, Faust or Taylor would probably have been given a pencil and paper for their thoughts. And as I said earlier, I'll probably still buy a copy.I hope the author enjoys the free press they received today.

I am so excited that this book is available. Does anybody know if it will be available in the new team shop? I have to have this thing, and it's about time. Now, I just need to find a fitting place for this at my house. Do we have a icon of a smilie beating a dead horse? I mean, I really think it was a shame that someone pointing out that such a long overdue book was being published has yet again resulted in two pages of the usual back and forth. It really has killed this thread. Next time, I suggest moving it to the smack section and you guys can make whatever arrangements you want to fight it out over there. Here, I did it for you:http://zipsnation.org/forums//index.php?showtopic=14455

more importantly, who reads the foreword?
Good catch. Well done....
haha I mean no offense, but you all look pretty stupid calling it the forward.
We've all looked much more stupid on other topics. See the latest posts on the scoreboard and light poles. Our Hall of Fame stupidity is resides in our parking posts.

I was in the bookstore earlier this week and the book is already on the shelves.
Thanks Zip N' Dots! I'll pick one up on Monday.I have the outmost respect for Tressel, as do seemingly most of the people who have followed his career. That doesn't mean I have to like his selection to author of the foreword to this book. Actually while I am basically an un-apologetic Buckeye anti-fan, it's Jim's association with longtime nemesis YSU that really bugs me with this selection. His Penguin teams kicked our butts and as a Zip fan I have bad memories of those meetings. I also feel that the UA program should be able to have a summary publication that can stand on its own merit. Sure (as GP1 points out) there may be relatively few high moments to celebrate in Zip football history, but every program deserves a publication like this for hardcore fans. And let's face it, Tressel is a footnote of a footnote in UA football history, regardless of the commendable acts he's undertaken towards the University. I'm sure glad this book's available, irrespective of the controversial foreword.

You are one of the biggest hardheads on this board and you completely missed the whole point of what I wrote. I know you like to get all high and mighty and up on your "UA is the greatest thing since sliced bread" soapbox, so I am sorry I actually use some reasoning to debate what people on here say. If you dont like it, tough.I came to UA in 1996 and I have no idea who in the hell Jim Dennison is. My point was...unless you are an OLD TIME Zips fan you dont know the guy. He doesnt speak to me because he wasnt a known comodity. As for Jason Taylor, the majority of friends that I have had no idea that he went to UA. He wasnt a big time college player, so he slid under the radar. If, as you say, the point of this book is to sell it to Zips fans then I think that is short sighted. The point is to INCREASE awareness and interest in the program, not just sell to old timers that know Jim Dennison and Jason Taylor. As for your other rhetoric that you spewed.....1. Am I an OSU fan? Yup, I have been since I started watching football at age 5. It is all I knew growing up, so sue me.2. Am I a Buckeye honk? Nope. I find a lot of shortcomings in that program and I voice those to OSU people when we have discussions.3. I didnt go to OSU. I could have, but I wanted to go to Akron because it was was the school that fit me. I have no loyalty issues. I am a zip and I have been since 1996. I get frustrated a hell with this program, but I get even more frustrated with people like you that belittle and attack every post I make because you are incappable of seeing past the fact that I also root for OSU. OH NO!!! When it all comes down to it, I root for my school over OSU.You know....this is so stupid. I have no reason to defend myself to anyone, especially the pricks on this board like you and Zips Win, etc.... If you want to kick me off, fine. I really couldnt care less about having discussions with people like you that are jealous hearted of successful schools, defensive and just plain intellectually dishonest. I will get off my soapbox now. Good day

I hadn't read the foreward until I saw this thread. I liked it. My thoughts are it is being sold on the UA campus in the B&N Bookstore. Current students may not know the connection we have with Jim Tressel and I have no problem with Tressel writing the foreward as long as it gets students interested in the Zips product. Heisman is a great story as well. Why be upset with our past and who was once here no matter where they are now. People always reach out to the well-known alumni and friends because it helps in getting the word out to those average fans and potential new ones.We really just need to get over ourselves and embrace what we have to offer. There is great tradition here, why hide it?

Not that you need it, or want it, but...I defend Zipgrad on this. Some of you are making a huge deal about nothing. And some of you are incapable of distingquishing between the University of Akron student that supports his team, but likes what he rooted for as a kid, and the University of Akron student that get's an education and wears Buckeyes garb the entire time and treats UA Athletics as glorified High School.

I came to Akron after coach Dennison's time also. When I was a senior at Akron I sat at a game with a guy that played for Dennison. The way he described coach Dennison, you would have thought he was his father. Just one example. I'm guessing there are many more. IMO he would have been an excellent choice to write. As head coach of the Zips, Dennison established himself as the winningest coach in Akron football history, with a 13 year record of 80 wins, 62 losses and two ties. He was the first Zip gridiron coach to win ten games in a season, and the first to play for a national championship. He also became the first and only Zip Football Coach to be named Ohio Coach of the Year and Kodak National College Coach of the Year in 1976. In 1982, Dennison added the Ohio Valley Coach of the Year Award to his list of accomplishments.During his tenure as the Zips Head Coach, he produced three of the six best records in Akron football history, 10-3 in 1976, 8-3 in 1983 and 8-4 in 1985. The ‘85 team, his last, finished ranked 10th nationally and earned an NCAA I-AA playoff berth. Dennison has recruited or coached countless All-Americans, and numerous all-conference players. He is also proud of his 82% graduation rate at Akron. In 2002 and 2005, he was named NAIA Northeast Region Sports-Turf NACDA Athletic Director of the Year and was named NAIA Region IX Athletic Director of the Year in 2004 and 2005. In 2003 he became a charter member of the University of Akron Ring of Honor and in 2007 he received the University of Akron Alumni Honor Award.A passionate believer in positive mental attitude (PMA), Dennison is called upon to deliver his message about motivation and goal setting. Jim and his wife Sue are parents of a daughter, Mrs. Denise Morrow, and three sons, Jim, Greg and Matt and have ten grandchildren. The Dennison’s reside in Norton.

Ohio State fans are sooooo cute when they're angry. There is no fear of being banned, ZipGrad01. It would be too crippling to the board. You bring so very much to the table...I think our site would fold if we lost your valuable insight.Beyond that -- You know you can't live without reading ZipsNation.

Bought my copy today. I liked what Tressel wrote, even though it's hardly half a page, it seemed very heartfelt and sincere. It's also kind of cool to read the articles from the Buchtelite from the 1800's and the interesting vocabulary and diction used at the time. Kudos to Ms. Kaloz for taking the initiative to compile all of the information for this book, it's really a pretty awesome thing for any Akron, or college football fan to have. Heck, I just learned from it that originally a touchdown used to be worth four points and a field goal worth five, kind of interesting stuff for any football fan I would imagine.
