Zipgrad01
Let this be a reminder to everyone that the decisions you make not only hurts you but your family, teammates the community and your fellow students. I hope CJ gets some much needed help. For every action comes a reaction! We all need to focus on the positive and put these distractions aside, we've got plenty of season to right the ship. JD is not the problem,at the end of the day players need to accept responsibility. JD addressed the coaching problem with hiring two good coaches in Harris and Montgomery. Go Zips!!I'm sorry, but there is just no way that JD is coming out of this without taking at least some of the blame. It's his ship. He's the captain. When the ship starts taking on water people are inevitably going to start looking at the captain. There is just no way that he's coming out of this unscathed. Especially with a new AD and the massive investment that the University just put into the program.on point..the new sheriff in town...er AD did NOT come here to put up with this and won't...he has no allegiance to the staff nor should he...hell he is not going to shoot himself in the foot by taking on somebody else's mess...unless brookhart et al perform a heretofore unseen miracle we will likely get to start all over again next year...It wouldn't be all that big of a surprise if we were starting all over again in the next few weeks. No way do they get rid of JD before the end of the season, unless it is to promote a guy like Walt Harris. Firing a coach during the season typically kills a recruiting class and I dont think that the university wants to set themselves even further behind. Quickzips
Recruits and players are going to leave the program or look elsewhere any time there is a coaching change. In that matter there really isn't a "good" time to make a coaching change. If it is plainly obvious that the coach is a lame duck you should cut ties now and move forward as such. ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net
The board has been rallying to the Zips today but I have to agree with the few who are posting that if the team really eats dust this Saturday, I will not be the least bit surprised if Wistrcill lets JD go before the end of the weekend. Again, lest we forget, Infocision needs mucho butts in the seats. To think that this coaching staff and team will be allowed to limp through more games is folly. The universe to JD:"The good news is that you're facilities are going to become absolutely first rate, beautiful! You will also have an AD over you who is going to SELL the hell out of thte program. The bad news is that because of the above-noted good news, you will immediately be on the hot seat, before you ever get to the 2009 MAC schedule. And by hot, I mean red sizzling hot. Oh, before I forget, your team is going to lose two of three to start the season. Oh, and by the way, your senior QB is going to break it off in your back side. Baller, I see where you're coming from, and dude I buy my tickets and cheer as loudly as anyone at the park. I'm a graduate who, after living away for most of the last 20 years, moved back here and care about my alma mater as much as anyone here. I also own a house in the city of Akron, so my future financial well-being is directly tied to the fate of this city. It makes no sense to me that when some here raise issues with coaching and on-field performance, as well as the larger context in which those issues play out, we are considered to be spewing hatred or are disloyal the team. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

InTheZone
I got it confirmed this morning that Jac was in fact caught stealing from his teammates and coaches, and had been doing so for a long time. What a POS. I could never have even thought about stealing from my teammates, they were closer to me than my family. When you spend that much time with a group of guys and bleed and sweat and go to battle with them every Saturday, it creates a bond stronger than blood, but I guess that's only true for guys who aren't worthless thugs like Jacquemain. And from a senior QB, a guy who's supposed to be leading the team, wow, I can't even imagine how he could live with himself. I'm not sure why JD said it wasn't a criminal matter, because thievery, regardless of where it's done and who it's done to, is still a crime, and a worse crime than normal in this case IMO. Unimaginable to me how he could do that.

Captain Kangaroo
The whole "Elevate Walt Harris to Head Coach next week" thing is absurd. So our new AD...he's been here all of 3 weeks...is going to fire a coach who began the season 1-3, with games against 2 Big Ten teams and the #1 team in the MAC? No f-ing chance.Ok...say he does fire JD after a 1-3 start to the season. He goes up to Walt Harris and says:"Hey...I just fired your friend...the guy that gave you a chance to get back into football when no one else really would...now I need someone to replace him. I think you'd do a great job. Would you like to coach the Akron Zips?"I could see Harris' reaction being -- "You fired my friend after you've known him for three weeks?! And now you want me to replace him? What happens to me if I go 1-3 in my next four games? Are you insane? Do you think I don't have a soul? Look...I'm still pulling in $800,000 this year from Stanford. I don't need the money, and I CERTAINLY don't need the aggravation?! Keep it."Unless he quits, JD is here for the remainder of the year. The chances of him getting fired range somewhere between Blutarski's GPA and Jacquemain's chances of a mid-season nomination for Team Captain. The schedule gets ridiculously easier over the next several weeks. He has every opportunity to win 6 more games and keep his job. I think he has the talent on the field to do it. It is up to him to come up with the game plans and adjustments to do it. He needs to change his motto from "3 More Feet" to "Six More Wins." That's what he really needs. ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net
Ah, but Cap'n, are you completely confident that Proenza is going to give Wistrcill any of the leeway that you infer? Is it not just as likely that even if Wistrcill were willing to muddle through a half-assed season, that from his perch High Atop Infocision Stadium (where the fireplace will soon be lit as the weather changes) Proenza will become incensed at the lack of traction being gained by this program in their first and only inaugural season at the New House? <<<---I defy you to come up with a better run-on than that by the way.I think that Wistrcill was hired more for his marketing acumen than for anything else, and is it not safe to assume that Proenza and the board are going to exert much more influence over the program than they ever have in the past? How does 6-6 or 7-5 do anything to move this program in the right directions? 6-6 or 7-5 are simply more of the same. Same crappy product, shiny new digs. It doesn't work. Who buys into that? Well some of us are tired of consistent mediocrity! And we were FAVORED to beat Indiana! So many people have accepted this crap for so long, but now we want more! We see good athletes coming in, good coaches coming in, the new stadium, which obviously doesn't help; butwe don't see any improvement on the field. Captain Kangaroo
i think some are missing the point. The 1-3 record is only part of the problem. To some it seems the program is out of control. As an Ohio State fan who has seen real "out of control" behavior, I hope you have laughed in the face of anyone inferring the Zips football program is "out of control." The Zips starting QB was kicked off the team. That's disappointing, but hardly unheard of in college athletics. Indiana's starting QB was kicked off the Hoosier squad this summer. It happens. Maybe it stands out because JD has had so few character issues during his tenure? The "recruiting violation" will prove to be irrelevant. Take this to the bank -- the infraction alleged against the program has Z-E-R-O chance of losing a single scholarship. It has a realistic chance of generating no penalty whatsoever. The mainstream media sickend me with their portrayal of the Zips program this past week. Most lumped the alleged infraction along with the QB story to make it appear a coach paid the QB cash. I know this because I heard it 4 times before 9am at work Thursday, and from several people at my bowling league Thursday night. I hope when this plays-out, if the program is found clean, that the media goes after that story with as much zeal as it did with their misleading headlines last week.*Note* - This will likely be the last time I comment on this situation until the investigation is completed. The Zips problem is stopping the run with the 3-3-5. And moving the chains on offense. The other stuff is all BS. As GP1's tag line says -- "...you want it to be one way, but it's the other." JD should be fired for one reason and one reason only....the team isn't winning with a great deal of good MAC talent. Like CK said, play physical and stop the run. Play physical and get yards on first down.Walt Harris is working at UofA because he bought a century home in Pittsburgh that is being gutted and fixed up. He needs somewhere to live and something to do for a year. Whether JD is here or not next year, Harris will not be. You don't fix up a century home in Pittsburgh to live in Akron. Harris could consult for the Steelers or something once he gets back to Pittsburgh. He is also older than he looks and may be able to retire. It is not like JD is doing idiotic things like Lane Kiffin. For "some" to say this team is "out of control" would be completely inaccurate. It starts with leadership at the top and I say a college football program is out of control when its leader is. See examples below:After spending $140 on drinks and tips at a strip club, you then have about $1,000 in food and drink charged to your bill by a woman named Destiny (who is not your wife) who is staying in your hotel room. Also having several students say they've seen you getting sloshed at bars near campus. Mike PriceYou built your career as a football coach on lies. George O'LearyHaving your honor-roll student, a homecoming queen and an honorable mention all-county kicker, verbally abused and molested by teammates. Then justify it by saying she is an awful player. Also, use sex and alcohol to recruit football players. Gary BarnettSending e-mails to your boosters, but only after they paid $1,200 to receive them. The e-mails, dubbed "The VIP Connection," contained news about players' injuries, their academic standing and your blunt assessments of their skills. Dennis FranchioneYou oversee a series of rule violations, including academic fraud and a scheme where players were paid up to four times the prevailing wage for jobs with a firm owned by mega wealthy and ultra-personable Marshall booster Marshall Reynolds. 1999 MAC Coach of the year Bob PruettBecause you are such an alcoholic, your attorneys fight (and lost) your DUI conviction on the grounds that a toxicology report showed traces of GHB (date rap drug) in your system (unfortunately for OU this ended all coverage of OU football for 2006). Frank SolichYou oversee 107 violations at Florida bargained down to 59 and three years probation - Charley PellYou have to forfeit 31 scholarships at Miami (FL) and have a postseason ban - Dennis EricksonYou receive the "Death Penalty" at SMU = the loss of 55 scholarships - Bobby Collins, Ron MeyerLying about and then admitting an affair with your secretary (although he wasn't fired at Alabama until his team began to lose regularly)- Mike DuBoseYou have one of the most lucrative coaching contracts in the nation ($2 million) when you sign an under-the-radar $250,000 agreement with Rutgers’ marketing agent to pay you for “personal services” (Again, this didn't matter because he won). Greg SchianoThere is only one cure, which I hinted at earlier. See Rich Rod... a couple of "big" wins and these "issues" don't matter as much. Win 400 games and it really doesn't matter what the heck you do to win, just ask Bobby Bowden.Football is big business.
