Looks like the DC job is Mallory's to lose. Illini fans are almost universally happy to get rid of him. I'm apprehensive.
Why does it look that way?
Because that's what Adam Rittenberg says on his blog, per Tom Dienhart of Rivals.com. Same with the Illini message boards.
Thanks for the reply & info.I liked the work Vince did while here .. but at the same time, I'm amazed that RI continues to bring in coordinators from BCS programs to be coordinators @ UA. Position coaches on down this seems to be a very experienced staff. One thing I think UA will generally be indebted to Mike Thomas for was adopting the culture that in order to be a big time program (in any sport), you need to act like you are, prepare like you are, resource like you are big time. Almost walk the talk before you walk the walk. There was a blog post a season or so related to hoops (not here at ZN.O) where the guy remarked (& quoted other MAC coaches) about how the Zips walk around the Q like they own the place and they've won the MAC Tourney 5 times running. This was before the break through last March. I think that's the same thing. Be big time .. prepare .. work .. play like you're an elite program. Lose any constraints brought upon yourself by thinking within the confines of being a MAC school. The fall might just be interesting.Go Zips!

I'm pretty disappointed about hiring Mallory, but I'll give him his fair shot.In other news, Lane Kiffin is bolting Tennessee for USC! I hope the fallout does not effect Browning's spot here at UA.ESPN LinkAs an aside, has there EVER been a crazier off-season in the NCAA football coaching ranks?
I don't think that Kiffin bolting affects Browning's status, so long as he signed a contract already, and I'm assuming he has because it would be dumb to announce anything without one.Of course if Tennessee does come knocking they'll have to pay the full buyout fee, which I would think should pretty significant this early on.As far as the coaching carousel goes, it's been one crazy year. I would hope that the coaching staff can take advantage by nabbing some prospects who aren't too enamored with their new coaches.

:P most of us thought that hiring Harris/Montgomery last year would push the offense over the top...lots of these lower level coaches either look good or not on paper...ianello is short on hc experience but is bringing in assts with some good looking backgrounds..who knows?...whats on the field is what counts...

Yep, that was Ray Mernagh's column in the MACReportonline. Nice read if you haven't seen it. Dambrot brings confidence, and victory, to the Zips. Here's a quote from the article "Nate Linhart, a kid one Zip fan said on a public message board back in his freshman year "wasn't a D-1 player" is winning MAC Tournament MVP honors." OK, own up, who was it? ;)

I give Harris and Montgomery a small pass. They had QB problems. You won't be successful on offense without a solid QB. That position didn't sure up until the middle of the season. That will not be a problem next year. PN16 should be solid. Now if this staff can mix in a solid running game with PN16...sky is the limit IMO. I'm hoping our bread and butter running play is not a hand off in the shotgun with PN16 running next to the RB!?!

here,here..don't think so though..ianello i don't think will be wedded to the spread...he needs to find a solid rb and tight end in the spring/summer... hopefully the t.e. will be more a part of the offense..i hope some of these hires who have 'recruiter' after their names can actually 'coach 'em up, on the field..unlike the last regime...the defense still worries..vince o would be a good keep...

I was told Vince Okruch was hired as our safeties and special teams coach.
You were also told "WOO HOO!" (by me).
Say it's so!!!
Fear the moustache! TM (I'm working on the logo and t-shirts)We might need to honor him the way the Steelers honored Ken Anderson a couple weeks ago.1127278.jpeg

These positions will be fine. What we will need are WRs that can get open and catch the ball down field. Does anyone know who that will be?I'd like to see the TE in the offense more. For example, they need to block well if the Zips can get the ball down by the endzone.
