Dr Z
My annual golf trip is scheduled at the same time. I wish this game was recorded and replayed like bigger schools. I'm pretty sure ND does it, I wonder if Rob will bring that idea with him? Other schools spring game tv schedule
ZachTheZip
Only 318 people are coming for sure, and half of that is the football team. That's about on par with attendance for the last game of the season.

Any spring game is about the most pointless thing a fan could go to. It's like going to watch a practice and the marketing department should not advertise boring events. Anyone who has been to a college football practice would see how boring they actually are. If 318 people go to the spring game, then there are 318 people with nothing better to do on a Saturday. Wake me when the real games start.
ZachTheZip
The final broadcast of Zips Live for the year is tonight, covering the spring game. Sure, spring games are meaningless, but they are an opportunity to make money. One that the University is not taking advantage of at all. Some schools advertise heavily and get tens of thousands of people paying lots of money to watch a scrimmage. Akron has free parking, free attendance, free festival admittance. The only thing not free is the food and drink. Ten people paying for tickets makes more money than 300 people getting in for free.

You miss the point of the spring game (and I don't know that other schools charge, you'd have to show me that somewhere) the spring game is about accessibility of the team to the fans. You charge for this and non shows up. It's a "hey look at the future of your team" and a "we know you're hungry for football so here's a taste". I am excited to see the new players, possible new schemes....heck...im excited just to see football again. Who cares if its only a scrimmage. Its still fun to be at the stadium, possible tailgaiting with friends and seeing other znation friends. Go Zips! Be positive guys, this year will be fun. johnnyzip84
I know it's just a spring game, but I'm eager to get there on Saturday regardless. It looks like Randy Greenwood is getting a look at RB. Go Zips Link

Wake me when the real games start. Maybe ANY spring game in the MAC is pointless, but not for BCS schools. There its a way to raise a little petty cash ($100+K) minimum. That covers a whole seasons worth of athletic tape. And its a way some fans who can't get into a real game can get some semblance of a game day experience. I cannot argue against the UofA making money on out of season practices/games for sports. Any extra cash would be helpful. Maybe to finally finish the team shop. Unless you like seeing more vacant store fronts on Exchange St. However, there is a world of difference in paying $10-20 to see OSU, Cinnci and Notre Dame players practice and The Zips practice. In big BCS schools' spring games, you (as a fan) are seeing the AAA farm team of the NFL for certain players. You can say "I saw/talked to/got autograpgh of Player X, before he was a star." Its like watching that Santana kid catch for the Aeros last year. In Zips' spring games, we go cuz we like college sports; specifically, Akron Zips football. We reconnect with friends, tailgate again when its nice out and bask in the enjoyment of being a fan(atic). Do you think a profit of significant amount could be made if there was a $5 admission charge? Unless the UofA would have attendence in the high thousands, dont think its worth the effort. Just my 2cents.

johnnyzip84
It looks like a number of guys are going to miss the scrimmage due to injuries, including Harvey, Broderick Alexander, and a few offensive linemen. RI says he'd rather play a split squad format but the injuries are a problem. He expects to get there eventually, but I recall JD saying the same thing. johnnyzip84
as usual... weather shitty This might be your most telling post yet. I was just out for a nice, slightly brisk, run and it's VERY acceptable football weather out there. We all know the old saying regarding people who fall into "glass half empty" of "glass half full" categories. I'd like add two more categories. Here are the four I propose. 1) Glass half empty - those of us who are generally somewhat pessimistic 2) Glass half full- those of us who are generally somewhat optimistic 3) Glass is overflowing - that rare breed who thinks that anything is possible (my last boss was like this....I don't wish that on anybody) 4) Glass is bone dry, on the precipice of shattering into a billion tiny shards before igniting into a massive fireball and finally being fused into a charred, horrific and grotesque remnant of itself. Go Zips!

Go Zips! I just finished up a 5K and, ironically, I was about to post essentially the same senitment as Lee. I would suggest anyone attending the game today to dress in layers and wear your winter clothes - coat, gloves & skull cap. When I was finishing up the run it was beginning to snow. The wind will cut right through you. It was rough running in it. It'll be even worse just sitting out in it. So go to the game & see what iCoach has in store, but bundle up!!! InTheZone
The quick and dirty: -Wasn't all that impressed with Nicely. He has a nice arm but has accuracy issues and struggles in his ability to make the correct reads and get the ball off. While this could somewhat be expected of a young QB, I was hoping he'd be farther along at this point. No wonder Ianello isn't handing him the job yet. -Alex Allen looks fully healthy and ready to close out his career spanning over more than half the decade in a big way. - The offensive line looks night and day better than last year, at least the first unit. Their footwork in pass protection was solid (yea I watch those kinds of things, I'm a nerd), they were getting out of their stance quicker and looked more forceful at the point of attack. Browning has done a great job this spring. - Shawn Lemon has found a natural home in the 4-3. Look for big things out of him in '10.
johnnyzip84
OK, I will admit I was a little harsh on Lee earlier. The weather wan't so great after all. I made the mistake of believing the forecasts that indicated only a slight chance of precipitation. It actually seemed to get a little colder as the game went along too. At least it never really came down.
