MDZip
It might not be completely random but CNN just listed Akron Ohio as the 10th most affordable place to live in the country.
Dr Z
Not really that "random", but since today is opening day, from the PD. Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney will throw the ceremonial first pitch. The tradition of the Carney family attending home openers spans three generations and nearly 60 years, according to ESPN. "My dad introduced me to basically everything I like still as an adult -- music, sports, baseball and comedy," said Carney, of Akron. "I remember clearly the first time my brothers and I played catch. It was summer 1987 and we all became hooked on baseball. All of us played Little League for the next few years and would drive to the games listening to (Indians broadcaster) Herb Score."
skip-zip
Dr Z, you just reminded me to post this one. Did anyone else watch the USA vs. Guatemala soccer game the other night? The play-by-play guy mentioned how much Yedlin has blossomed since playing at "The University of Ak-Ron" in his European-pronunciation voice. I watched the entire game, and I think it was the only time that any player's college affiliation was ever mentioned.
Dr Z
I was at the US Open in Oakmont yesterday. One of the marshals walks over to me and points at my shirt "did you go to Akron...I taught biology there for 35 years"

MDZip
From a story in the Washington Post about the greater influx of Middle Eastern women in the Olympic games Akron was a training ground for a weightlifter from the UAE. Note her reference to "James LeBron".

I was watching the Iowa game and thought I heard "Akron" as well, but it is actually "Akrum." Akrum Wadley. I had to check it myself! Here's Iowa's roster. http://www.hawkeyesports.com/roster.aspx?path=football&roster=224&sort=position Btw, I love the way Iowa displays their online roster. Well done. ZippyforPresident
Not exactly a random reference to Akron, but a new show highlighting our fair city on Western Reserve PBS: Akron, Ohio shines on new PBS TV show: "Around Akron with Blue Green" October 3rd @ 9pm
ZippyRulz
Not real random either, but found this ad in a 1970 Life magazine http://zipsnation.org/forums/uploads/monthly_2016_09/large.DSCN6771.JPG.2be701750813bd99aa63b55f29423237.JPG

LZIp
The parents of potentially the top QB taken in this year's draft met at UA. Quote Trubisky might have been born to play football. His parents met as flag football teammates at the University of Akron. Jeanne was a three-sport high school athlete, Dave played four sports. The genes passed on. http://mmqb.si.com/mmqb/2016/12/21/nfl-draft-2017-mitch-trubisky-north-carolina-tar-heels-quarterback
skip-zip
So, I'm watching SportsCenter this morning. And they are showing the Dancing Potato at the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl yesterday. And the girl narrating the clip says, ".....as Akron takes on Utah State......" I think she's a year off
skip-zip
I almost forgot about this one.... On the Browns Pregame Show on TV 19 on Saturday, Bernie was talking about Philip Rivers being coached by Chuck Amato, who is now the DC at The University of Akron.......and then added that this is also where his old Browns teammate Larry Williams is now the Athletic Director. MDZip
I can't find a clip but Sportscenter showed a moment during an Ohio State game where Dan Dakich was an announcer and he talked about how much he hated mascots and specifically called out Zippy for annoying him once during an Akron-BGSU game. Go Zippy! :-)
