MDZip
I didn't see anyone reference this from the Plain Dealer. Scuttlebutt II: Word is, the league's interest in UMass for football is a big leverage stick aimed at the Temple Owls. Temple must decide by the first of the year if it wants to extend its allegiance to the MAC for football, or end it after the 2012 season. If the decision is to stay, then UMass will be welcomed to partner with the Owls, and (hopefully) the MAC will see fit to (a) get both to sign a long-term deal and (B ) have a seven-figure buyout clause for both if they leave early. The fallout would be another team added to a small MAC post-season bowl pool (three guaranteed) and Bowling Green once again becomes the pawn, moving from the MAC East Division back to the MAC West, where it began when the league first went to divisional play in 1997. If Temple opts to end its association with the MAC, UMass would be put on the back burner until the league found another team, preferably one interested in all-sports status, which would then put some pressure on the Minutemen to join the league in all sports as well. MDZip
Interesting that this news is let just as the MAC is considering expansion. GP1 will be happy. Dollar General expanding - to annouce 6,000 jobs. Of course that also reminds me of this. By the way, Temple was supposed to announce their intentions of continuing with the MAC by January 1st. Anyone hear anything? Nothing on the MAC web site.

Anyone hear anything? Nothing on the MAC web site. I tend to get the credit for calling the MAC the Dollar General of conferences, but it is actually the luckiest woman in the world, Mrs. GP1 who said, "Being commissioner of the MAC would be like being VP of Marketing for Dollar General. You could convince people to come to your store once to shop, but once they see the crap you are selling they won't come back." She said that a couple of years ago after the UofA vs. Miami football game that ended in something like a 3-0 score on national tv so all of America could see it. In the current economic situation, it appears Dollar General is doing well....at least better than the MAC. When things turn around though, straight to Target. In pure economic terms, there has always been a market for bad stores like Dollar General. In my home town 30+ years ago, we had a store call Ben Franklin that was the Dollar General of the day. I'm not sure there ever has been or will there be a market for bad D-1A football. In fact, when Mrs. GP1 compared the MAC to Dollar General, it was probably an insult to Dollar General. Nothing on the MAC web site. I used to think the ACC would be a good fit for Temple, but with the resurgence of Florida State, VA Tech still being good and UNC coming along, I don't see why they would want to bring down the quality of their league while it is on the upswing. The Big East needs to decide what to do and soon. Temple might fall back there by accident. At the end of the day, Temple has a pretty good set up in the MAC. They have everything they need to be a top program in the league and they are in a solid basketball conference. There doesn't seem to be a reason for them to change right now. Lee Adams
Bad move if it is football only. If they bring men's soccer and/or men's hoops along with them very good move. If they go football only with a significant scheduling agreement for soccer and hoops ok move. Umass is not going to 'step down' in basketball to come to the MAC. In 5 years they might be in the MAC championship game in fball.
Lee Adams
Ya,everyone would like Navy/Army on the football side. Why would they come to a crap coference like the MAC for that? They can go to better bowl games on their own.

johnnyzip84
Looks like a done deal. http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/in...husetts_fo.html Nice find. Now that UMass will be joining for football, we'll have to wait and see whether the MAC might need to find a Temple replacement to eventually become a 14 team league. It would seem as though a lot hinges on what happens to Villanova's Big East football prospects (see comments to the article).
ZachTheZip
If UMass is joining, then the MAC must be confident that Temple won't leave. I don't like the idea of North-South divisions, however.

Really wouldn't change much from what I can tell. East - Akron, Buffalo, Can't, Miami, Ohio, Temple, UMass West - Ball State, BGSU, CMU, EMU, NIU, Toledo, WMU In a North South allignment it would likely be: North - NIU, WMU, CMU, EMU, Toledo, BGSU, Buffalo South - Akron, Can't, Miami, Ball State, Ohio, Temple, UMass So We would have Ball State and they would get Buffalo, Akron would then have its three rivals (Can't, Miami, and Ohio). If you look at the map, there isn't any other way to do a North South division.

Captain Kangaroo
Next time Z-guins stops by our board, it will be interesting to see how he spins this one. Yet another 1-AA program steps up to the 1-A plate, while YSU football is content to try and achieve "tallest midget" status with whomever remains at the kiddie level. But, they complain MAC programs won't come to YSU to play them? UMass just showed them how it's done...on the field, not whining on a message board. Fall trips to New England will be fun. I look forward to it. Is UMass football any good? Probably middle-of-the-pack-MAC if they began playing today. It will be sad to see them surpass the Zips after 2 seasons at the 1-A level (2012), when we've been at it for 25 years. Don't let it happen, iCoach. My understanding is that FB division reconfiguration would be done such that Temple and UMass are NOT in the same division. Having them in the same division would double the excess travel burden for the other teams in the division. Look for Temple & UMass to be in opposite divisions when it's all played out. Go Zips! Captain Kangaroo
How long has it taken Temple to play @ the JAR? They joined in 2005, and I don't recall ever seeing them grace our hallowed court? Thus the "UMass must play 2 MAC schools per year on the road" stipulation doesn't excite me all too much. Zeke will be in his 4th season with the Celtics before we ever see an AirTran flight dropping UMass players off on the CAK tarmac.
