Z.I.P.
Good, but no parade or BIG celebration? Separate from other sporting events? I'm disappointed. +++ Where's that Mayor Pasquatelli guy? Doesn't he wanna be associated with a national champion? Might get him another 4 or 6 years in office! It's a conference basketball game, not an exhibition or a tune-up game against a D-III team. I'd expect something similar to the little presentation when Zippy won mascot of the year. Doing this during a conference basketball game is a good idea since there will already be a crowd of maybe 4,000 people, and the soccer fans should make that larger. It will increase the basketball game attendance, and the two crowds combined will create a great atmosphere for the recognition. A separate celebration wouldn't draw like this, and a good enough draw for a parade is just wishful thinking.
Zip_ME87
I just hope that they do this at half time and not at a 2 minute timeout. If this is being done at a basketball game, then it should be the entire halftime show so they can show highlights on the video board. They should show highlights from throughout the season as well as the NCAA Tournament games, and the "This is Akron" video or any update they may have produced. Winning the Zips' first team national championship is SIGNIFICANT and deserves more than a 2-minute timeout for celebration.

Dr Z
What does this topic have to do with Football? I moved it to basketball since this is supposed to happen during a basketball game. I remember when coach Lolla would come out during half time and bounce a ball off his knee for entertainment. Now the team is celebrating a national title during this time. How far they have come! Wasn't the Zippy mascot of the year celebration done as a pre-game festivity? If I remember correctly? I remember him being lowered on a cable from the rafters. Maybe our coach could volunteer to do the same, and be lowered while sporting his new hairdo. I expect that this will be a bigger deal than a 2-minute intermission show. And I think halftime is better than pre-game, since more people will be in their seats at that time.

Not sure if it is like the NFL draft where the players actually attend. I think I'll check on that ...

I guess they are all leaving for Baltimore Thursday morning? I don't know, that seems pretty rushed. I hope the whole team is there Wednesday night. Personally I think they deserve a huge ceremony, not just part of a halftime show, but maybe it will be real nice and I will be wrong about it not being good enough. Wouldn't you rather have the celebration in the JAR where there is a crowd of possibly 4,000+ or so already there for the basketball game? I'm sure some of you may have been dreaming of some sort of downtown ticker tape parade, with people hanging out of downtown office windows yelling and screaming, and players in limos waving to the crowds, and masses of people partying in the streets. I'd wish for that too, but I know anything of that magnitude is far from realistic. A halftime show during a basketball game at the JAR is really the only option. yazan07
I read your earlier posts, and I do see your point. I agree with you that this is probably the best option for having the most people at a ceremony for the soccer team. However, over 1,000 fans showed up on a snowy Tuesday afternoon during finals week to attend a send off party for the team, I think a recognition ceremony at an appropriate time would draw a really large crowd, maybe not 4,000, but still a large amount. I just feel like it is a bit of an insult to this team who just accomplished a huge feat to honor them at someone else's event. In no way did I really expect a parade, because as many people care about the soccer team, I'm not quite sure its enough for a parade. Though, I want to hear Porter speak, I want to some of the players speak, I want something huge for this team. To me, a huge event for the soccer team doesn't necessarily mean the largest number of people we can get, it means the largest number of people we can get who are coming to see the soccer team, not who just happen to be at a basketball game and the soccer team is there and that is it. Athletics has used half times as a way to honor teams in the past, I think, and they are always just kind of okay. If this ceremony is huge, I will maybe be pleased, we'll see. Also, I know OU is a big opponent who will probably draw a good crowd, but if this has to be done at a basketball game, wouldn't we get more people there at a weekend game as oppose to a Wednesday game? Or is this a scheduling thing to schedule around the combine, the draft, etc.
skip-zip
Good thoughts. I like the weekend game idea myself. But, since Ken+ would already be a near-sellout with the basketball crowd alone, it might just be that the OU game was really the only other option. But, I would have stil loved to see the Ken+ fans have to sit through that.

It's because an accomplishment on the level of a national collegiate championship deserves a celebration that serves the entire city of Akron, not just the university community. My city of Honolulu held a parade for Brian Clay, the Olympic decathlon champion and the Little League team that won the LLWS. Not more than a couple hundred people besides the downtown workers showed, but that was not the point. This team, and the City of Akron deserve to celebrate their NCAA Champs. infofan
To add to my original post. And I dont know why the university is being so tight lipped about this ( nothing yet on GOZIPS.com). Officially there is a tribute to the soccer team at halftime of the OU game wednesday. Also- and this should please Yaz and others. An insider at the city of Akron says "The University is planning the principal celebration for the men's soccer team at the JAR later in the month. We are holding January 18, 21, and 22 on the mayor's calendar for such an event right now. He will be involved. " Some people Im sure will start posting the mayor has no business being involved and that tarnishes the event. But bottom line im glad the university is planning an event period! The team and the fans deserve it.
