Soccer Celebration falls way short of team accomplishment

Recommended Posts

Last nights soccer celebration was a big disappointment. How could you not have atleast a 5 minute video going over all the teams we beat and post National Championship interviews? Why wasn't the players introduced individually? Atleast Coach Porter spoke to the fans. And tuesdays celebration is at 5:30, not many people who work will be able to attend that, why so early? Why isn't there a banquet like there was for the basketball team when they made the NCAA tournament a few years ago? Seeing how poorly this was done, I will have a hard time believing the Athletic Department will take the initiative to rename the street next to the field house National Champions Way and the street next to the stadium Porter's Place as was mentioned on a post recently by Zips Win. Maybe my expectation level is just too high.

Yes, I think it was.

Remember, this is UofA Athletics you're talking about. When have they EVER done anything right? Or heck when have they ever shown common sense?

I was told by Barley House management, the University were trying to get the City of Akron involved in throwing a parade, followed up with a celebration at the Barley House with videos and recognition of the Team players. I guess that must of fizzled out, although its a bit cold for a parade, but I would of been there.

I hear you, I'd be there no doubt as well.

At least they are giving out free hats on Tuesday (from what i've heard).

I'm not a soccer fan, but I am a Zips Sports fan, and I have to admit that I expected a little more too.

I hope you soccer nuts get a little more of what you may be wanting next Tuesday....I really do. And I hope enough people show up to make it worth having. But, I have had several discussions on this topic with people over the last several days, and I keep hearing the same thing...."We all enjoyed winning a national title in something, but It's Soccer we're talking about here".

What really matters, and all that I really want out of any "celebration is

To tell the players who are leaving... THANKS for bringing us a National Championship. THANKS for coming to Akron. BEST WISHES for your future. I wish you MUCH SUCCESS.

and those who are staying... See you in the Spring , at least for a few games, no matter where they are played, and I look forward to and will be there next season! Go Zips!

Links to a couple of YouTube videos (my apologies if the second one has already been posted in another thread) ...

After watching the YouTube videos, looks as if it was just a short display of recognition and thanks. I think or I hope Tuesday is much better.

the posters around campus say free hats, posters, autographs, pop, and chips....you guys have a lot to complain about

I'm going to complain because I can't get off of work to go to it tuesday. So now I don't know how I'm going to be able to know what happens/see it at it's entirety without paying for it or something...

are you saying it's the athletic dept's fault for scheduling it in the evening? were they supposed to make it during the day or something?

this video link sucks. Stuck at work and wanted to listen, but the audio is so quiet that I have to crank it all the way up just to hear anything. That and there doesn't seem like there's much "production" going on

Did i expect much more from the U? No... but I didn't it'd be this bad...

**EDIT**

15 minutes later, things got better. Finally some worthwhile video. Quality sucks, but I'll take it.

Too those of you who organized tonights events  . That was the recognition that the :NCAAC: deserved. Everything was perfect. From the introduction video ( which I want to get my hands on), to the team introductions, to Dr. Proenza's emotional speech, to a farewell to the eight Zips who are moving on, to Porter's speech, everything was well done. Here's to hoping we can do this again next year! :NCAAC:

Glad to hear it was so well done. How was the attendance? I wasn't able to make it - had to coach a kid's basketball team practice.

I'd say 1700 or so at least. Hard to judge, but both lower reserved areas were full and the entire floor had folding chairs covering it and they were full. Also some of upper levels on east, west and south.

Great turnout. I had a blast down on the floor in the first few rows with some other Rowdies. The Mayor finally got something right too, giving that key to the city to CP.

It was an awesome event. Very well done. Thanks to the Athletics Department for ensuring that all of the 8 players who are leaving were there. It was great to be able to thank and congratulate everyone and to wish them well.

For anyone who is interested (and can't wait until the Fall, like me)... when I asked, Caleb told me that the Spring (exhibition) schedule is set, and there will be 3 home games this year...Xavier, Cleveland State, and Maryland. [i don't know who the Zips are playing away.]
