Captain Kangaroo
Looks like Mike Cochran got the boot after only 1 season on the job? Cochran going to Youngstown State - did he get the boot or did he quit??? Interesting. He was a Girard kid who played for YSU, so Youngstown is his home. But Akron is 50 minutes from Youngstown...so there's no "I wanted to move back home for family reasons" excuse. Who knows...who cares.... I am excited to have "The Johnnyzips84 Impostor" as out new S & C Coach!

To me, we looked slower, weaker, and undersized even against MAC competition and on level with Gardner-Webb.

I still hold to the opinion that the firing of Dan Bailey was RI's mistake #1 in a long list of them. Coach Bailey had guys here performing above their level of talent for a decade. He knew better than any strength coach around how to take the undersized kids you get at a place like Akron and build them up into legit D1 players. That expertise was sorely and obviously missed last year as I can honestly say I didn't see one kid who transformed himself from '09 to '10. MDZip
I think we're seeing an entirely different philosphy if we can pull it off. Dr. Z as defensive coordinator, JohnnyZ as S&C, the Capt as head of marketing? If we can take Ianello's salary and split it up maybe we can keep everyone employed full-time and split the head coaching duties. I see a record setting season - can you say 0-12? He was hired to do that, wasn't he?

I love my Zips...love the stadium...love football Saturdays...love the tailgating...but I hate the vibe of the football program right now...not just the losing, but the whole all-encompassing vibe. Wistersil jerking me around with his 5k Donor lot thing still irks me. I hate that my AD was so stupid. I hate that the golf outing was cancelled...and if they bring it back this season, I'll probably skip it. I hate that good people are abandoning the Zips in year #3 of a brand new stadium. But they're being driven away. I can't blame them. There's no excuse for Saturday's in Akron not being an absolute Party...and instead there's about 39 of us who kept the place from looking like a complete morgue last season. I feel if I stay away, I'm quitting on UA. And that's not fair to the players. So I'll be there again this fall. But my heart's not in it like it has been in the past. I've endured 1-win seasons before. I can deal with them. But getting s&%t on during a 1-win season...that sucks.

Well put. I don't think TW is up for the job. He has made one bad decision after another starting with the Reno issue, which should have been a big red flag for everyone. Other than the soccer program, I'm concerned about the general direction (or lack of direction) of all the athletic programs. We can and should be better than what we are in all sports. This is not a good time for Akron sports. That football stadium cannot continue to sit empty and we need to start winning. If not, it will become unforgiveable to the people of Akron and it will take years to recover. There was a hiring committee that hired him. I wonder what they were thinking when they hired him. Who was on that committee?

Dr Z
There was a hiring committee that hired him. I wonder what they were thinking when they hired him. Who was on that committee?Great question. My committee was very small, and our research was very low scale, but we had a much better candidate. We would have taken a little heat in the beginning for not opening up a large scale "search", but there was no need. My candidate was right for the job and his results and dedication would have spoke volumes.

I don't necessarily see it the same way. I feel the program has stopped being loyal to me, the average fan. They make a terrible hire, get terrible results, build a staff of all fired coaches that can't get jobs anywhere decent and they give no reason to hope for better results. What hurts the most is that guys like you, GP1 and most others on this board hold fast to a vision that we should be the class of the MAC with an exciting future in all sports. The only way to bring change is to show I won't support this type of program. What hurts the most is to see the quality of the team on the field. They are below Akron standards and show little hope of playing good football, under i Coach, let alone win.

They are below Akron standards and show little hope of playing good football, under i Coach, let alone win. I wouldn't even say I expect to be the class of the MAC in all sports every year. There are too many good programs for that to be the case. Every once in a while would work for now. Is the team below Akron standards? Heck yes! And our standards aren't even that high. Winning six games a year should be our lowest standard. Never finishing below third in the MAC East should be our lowest standard. The golf outings, parking and off the field stuff is not important to me because I can't participate in them any longer. All I want is for this program to win more than they lose. Make it worth me investing three and a half hours on my weekends to go to a bar and watch them on some network I can't get at home. I'm not asking for much right now. Make it so I can go to McHale's with my UofA clothes on in the fall and when someone asks me, "How are they doing this year?", my answer in October isn't, "Not so good, they are 0-6." College football is second to religion in the south. When your team is bad, for whatever reason, it reflects badly on you. There is too much potential for this program to be this bad for this long. ZachTheZip
We're having a great discussion here, but it probably deserves its own thread. As for the strength coach, maybe he can take this idea from Mizzou. Practicing in bare feet to strengthen the foot and ankle muscles.
