the 2011 schedule has been released and looks beast. definitely pumped for the home matches against some quality teams. hoping for more media coverage too!

on a slightly downward note, The Jack is no more. Its now called the "Cub Cadet Field".

Also announced recently was a partnership between The University of Akron and Cub Cadet, the premier brand of Cleveland-based MTD Products, which will rename the Zips' new, state-of-the-art grass soccer field Cub Cadet Field.

Formerly known as Lee R. Jackson Field, the new soccer field and complex underwent a complete and remarkable transformation during 2010 to effectively establish it as a premier example of a model natural grass playing field. Renovations were significant and included installing a new field base, drainage and irrigation system, special natural grass surface, grandstands, stadium seating, and an advanced lighting system to accommodate requirements for national media and television coverage.

The new Cub Cadet Field serves as the home playing field for the 2010 NCAA national champion UA men's soccer program as well as the women's program.

On the plus side, I'm sure that means the athletics budget has a bit more $ to play with. Hopefully they can get more from all of their sponsors since they are the reigning national champs.

im hoping this money gets used to finish the facility and the money originally intended for the facility can be directed towards other areas of athletics...

you know where im referring and its NOT the unicorn basketball arena.

Sweet schedule! Lots of quality OOC opponents.:rock: Wonder how many have the potential for national TV exposure via FSN?

I particularly like the matches against UCSB, UNM, St. Louis, and Wake. We will once again have the opportunity to crown ourselves champions of the Big Ten.

Since we trail so distantly in the all-time series, I was hoping we'd have scheduled IU. There is always the revenge factor in playing NW again, and I wouldn't complain about seeing a few Big East opponents sprinkled in either. I would love to see UCLA or Portland and their soccer rich traditions too. Perhaps on future schedules. :D Kudos to Coach Porter and the rest of the staff.

:NCAAC:

I don't, actually. To what area(s) are you referring? Baseball?

that "coach" we have that supposedly leads a team of football (american) players.

Are you crazy...you want to give him more money? :D

I know, buy out his contract. I really hate the idea of throwing good money after bad rather that rewarding those who deserve it...basketball, for example (Men's and Women's).

My only disappointment is that the games in SoCal don't line up better with Chivas schedule. September 1 & 3 at Cal St Northridge provides an opportunity to see Chivas on August 27th (but I would miss the Aug 27th game at home vs Cleveland State). I guess I will aim for the UCSB game on October 5th which means Chivas USA v Phila Union on Oct 2nd. Z.I.P. - are you considering either of these time frames?

The playing surface will be called Cub Cadet Field but the stadium has yet to be named. One major Akron company is interested. The odds of additional seating for this upcoming season are very low. The big focus is to secure funding for restrooms. concessions and a team shop that could also be used by softball, baseball and track. Look for the facilities to be positioned behind the east goal and alongside the softball field fence. A proposal for funding support is on the desk of several companies of which one is said to be interested in supporting. Maybe we good sell naming rights. How about the Zipsnation.org :john: Crappers?

That actually isn't a bad idea. I would throw in some money for that.

I would also fork over some dough...perhaps we could raise additional monies from naming rights for the seats :lol:

BTW: My grandson (DeAndre Yedlin) was recruited by botn New Mexico and Cal Poly so those games will give him extra incentive

Waaaaay too early to make plans. However, no one else has mentioned this -- the UCSB game is now scheduled for Wednesday, rather than Friday. That means it will probably not be televised. All FSC's games last year (and year be4) were Friday nite games. That's sad. Interesting to see Cal Poly on schedule. Maybe in 2012 "we" could do a Central Coast tour with games @Poly and UCSB. Oh, okay, it might be time for the Gauchos to head to Akron. Can you guys supply tortillas for Big Mike and the Locos. :P (assuming that they will throw them despite the UA clean sheet!) :D

BTW -- Zip_ME87 -- Chivas is now at their lowest point in team history. Their game on Sat vs TFC is the first home game in years to not be televised by Fox Sports West. Pre-empted by World Poker Tour! That's pretty bad.

Just wondered if you were considering the UCSB or Northridge tournament at all.

Thanks for the information on Chivas. That's too bad because they are fun to watch...from what I've seen, they seem to do fine at getting the ball near and into the box, but just don't seem to have the touch or combination to put it in the net. They then seem to either get frustrated or sloppy (due to pushing too hard to score) and leave themselves vulnerable.

Soccer fans, here's the latest update on Z.I.P.'s plans for the 2011 season:

University of Hawai'i announced their schedule this week, and as I am a benefactor :P I may be obligated to attend road games which happen to fall perfectly in between the Akron games vs the Cal State schools from Sept 1-4. Four games in four days! That may be too much to pass up. :D Unfortunately, there is no pro futbol at the Home Depot Center during this time unless I arrive several days earlier -- which I won't rule out.

Is there anyone else on the board considering or planning to attend the Northridge tournament?

My first trip into the San Fernando Valley, but from looks, not much choice in Lodging. There's a HoJo Express about two miles south of campus. Cheap @ $70/nt, if I don't stay with relatives. I have to travel to Hawaii women's games in Irvine and Long Beach on Fri/Sunday.
