New Stadium

Okay, I'm pretty much a nerd & can't ever get enough of the new stadium talk. So, here's the latest I've heard while @ Panini's last night:Location: just where we've been expecting - NE corner of Exchange & Brown - entire block. All the old ratty eyesore structures are going to be bulldozed under!!! Entire block starting from scratch!Groundbreaking: THIS SUMMER!!! What is pending is whether current property owners are going to sell or whether UA must take eminent domain actions.Capacity: opening w/ 25 - 30k; expandable up to 60k!!!Seating: chairback seating in lower reserved. Bleacher seating above.Style: "Classic. Red brick. First class. Beautiful!"Cool Feature: A Winking Lizard Restaurant built into the stadium off Exchange Street!Cool Feature II: Just like we've heard, new student dorms are part of the project, with many rooms overlooking the football field - ala, the warehouse overlooking right field @ Camden Yards.Cool Feature III: Jason Taylor is donating a ton of $$$ for an alumni party balcony.Proximity to the Field House: connected.I'm completely amped about this project! I'm a college football junkie & can't wait to have a marquee program here @ Akron!!! The foundation is being laid for a future of dominance!!! I feel this new stadium will be of more significance to downtown re-development than even the beautiful Canal Park was!!! If anyone has any more information, I'd love to know what you've got! Keep me & everyone in The Nationl posted on any future developments!!!

This is the best report on the project yet. The facts are almost 100% correct (the seating will be a little bigger).

All I can say is WOW. No facilities in the MAC would even come close. There is no question we would be in position to dominate the conference for years to come. After a serious reality check with the hoops team against Nevada yesterday, it is great that there is hope that someday zips athletics will be able to compete with the big boys.

ground breaking this summer, but property owners haven't sold yet?uhm.........Any time anyone ever gets wind of a big project, it's extremely common for a portion of them to ask WAY TOO MUCH for their property, and you end up in a struggle. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your perspective), there is eminent domain, and eminent domain for stadiums and arenas is often do-able, because while they are not exactly pure civil construction, they are usually not considered in the same light as private venture either. Even pro sporting venues which really are just a business interest are considered a community asset. But, my point is, I wouldn't expect haggling over price and then a sledge hammer emminent domain action all in the space of a few months. It usually takes a lot more time then that, especially with appeals (and associated injunctions, etc).In other words, if they are breaking ground this summer, then those property deals had better be done already.PS: I'm upset if it's happening too soon. That means construction planning has already been done, and it's too late to propose my cantalever suspension retractable dome concept.

I've just heard from a reliable source that there is going to be an additional feature to the new stadium that nobody has talked about yet.It is going to be the "Dwight Smith Mardi Gras Plaza" in honor of him playing for the Saints. The following will take place on the plaza. Starting three hours before each game, fans will be served watered downed hurricanes full of the worst type of sweet drink mix and cheap rum possible. Once the fans are boozed up, they will all be given blue and gold beaded necklaces. Each time the Zips score a TD, the cheerleaders will flush their b**bs towards Dwight Smith Mardi Gras Plaza and the drunken fans will throw the necklaces to the cheerleaders. At the end of the third quarter or after each fan has thrown up :puke: , which ever comes first, the plaza will be shut down and a team of horse back police will clear the plaza. It's true.............well, only as true as the speculation we have about the stadium.

Thanks for the update BlueandGold. This pretty much goes along with what I heard a few weeks ago from an inside source speaking at a luncheon. Unfortunately all I was told was regarding location, seating, integral dorms, and cost. Thats all good information, but no discussion about a Winking Lizard restuarant or Jason Taylor alumni party deck. This is really going to be a first class facility. I can't wait to transfer my season tickets to the new place! Any ideas on what they might name it? I say Proenza Field.

Did your friend a Rotary mentiion anything about Dwight Smith Mardi Gras Plaza? I would rather have that than a Winking Lizard........

Charlie Fry needs to convince lerner to get the browns to play a preseason game there when it opens. It would give exposure to the stadium, and get people familiar with it who otherwise might not have...and potentially sell some zips football tickets. Although, something tells me that a brand new on-campus stadium will sell out the first few season no matter what, regardless of how the team is doing at the time.

Maybe they can call it "breaking ground" if you consider the demolion of the buildings on the already acquired properties as breaking ground. Real estate transfers are public info and may be reviewed at the Summit County Recorder's office (also available on line). I don't have time to check them out myself, but anyone else is free to.

There is no way the Browns will ever play an exhibition game at our new stadium unless it seats about 60k. :CK_brew: That represents the # of season ticket holders who are forced to buy preseason games as part of their package. The best we could ever hope for is some sort of scrimmage during training camp. :macc:

It appears the land that has already been acquired is being leveled. Hopefully the few remaining "hold-out" slum lords will be forced to sell their properties because they will essentially be on "islands."

Don't you think that Mr. Lerner has better things to do with his time than listen to the hired help about how to run his team?

On most web pages, a post like this would keep a thread going for days with photos and other funny posts. This was great ammunition for a thread. Think about it, it had a fake plaza named after a former Zip, drunk fans, cheerleaders exposing themselves, vomiting and mounted police clearing away a drunk mob. In addition, Mardi Gras is going on right now so recent photos would be available. Further, I wrote the post. That means guys like Z-P could come in and cry about what an a-hole I am and JP Morgan (who doesn't know that the internet is for three things...... goofing off, j@cking off and researching information) could cry about how classless the post is like he did about my Gloria James post.Within each person is something called a sense of humor. GP...do you talk (er, post?) just to hear yourself (er, see?) yourself speak (er, type?). Yeah, you get my point. Quit bein goofy and absorb everyone else's excitement and optimism. As for the new stadium, only thing that bugs me is a lack of places for tailgating. Along with Browns games at the Muny lots and tailgating along the airport fence @ the rubber bowl have provided some of the best times over the last few years of my life. Anyone else concerned about this aspect? Yeah, I know the benefits to the on campus new facility outweight this, but parking WILL be an issue.

I thought your post was somewhat humerous, but not enough to make me laugh out loud. I think I might have picked up and ran with it were it made in a new thread. This one has a life of it's own. The topic, while not earth shatteringly important, holds interest and relavance to many of us, which is why it should stay on topic.

Ah-hem. Uh, how do I say this? I started this thread & UAM just sent me a very polite private message telling me that almost all of the information I posted regarding the new stadium project is incorrect. Sorry. In my defense, though, I got all that info from a UA staff person helping run the party @ Panini's!?!? So I don't know if he was a bit 'tippsy,' or what? But, for the sake of integrity I thought I should let you all know. And thanks, UAM, for not making me look like an idiot on the board & ruthlessly exposing my ignorance!!!But anyway... Go Zips!!!

or they are trying to cover until all of the land is bought..... you never know :screwks:
it's a little late for that. The best thing to have done was to have bought up the land in stealth before anyone caught wind of development plans. Then, they could have got the land for market value. It would have been even better to have formed a front organization to do the purchasing. When a land owner knows a big university is trying to buy them out, the price goes way up. This was handled wrong.
