ndzeigler
Not sure if this has been brought up yet, but is it possible that President Proenza is grooming his successor in Jim Tressel? Just a thought...
Dave in Green
The key to this is that the Tressel hire has little to do with athletics. It has everything to do with the Vision 2020 plan. Who better to have engaging Ohio then probably the most recognizable face the state has to offer? Other then the haters on here, most people see Tressel as a legend. He is an alumnus, an iconic figure for the state, and has multiple connections with people of influence. I am glad this is happening, and it will be interesting to see the direction the University takes. Proenza has always wanted bigger and better for this University and this community. Good example of Think Big. Some of the other reactions to this hiring have been classic think small. Tressel's first assignment of raising funds for a new basketball arena is just the tip of the iceberg. As good things begin to come out of this, I'm sure that many of the doubters will start to get it. But no matter how much good Tressel does for UA, I expect to be reading posts five years from now from one or two diehards who just think this is all wrong. We don't know yet. I think we live in a society where people have very short memories. How do we even know if he will be working for UofA next year at this time? How do we know this just isn't a place to stop for a few months while he finds something else? I remain very skeptical. Yet, open minded about the whole thing. $200,000 isn't much money for a person who was used to making much, much more. I don't see this as a long term gig for the guy. NewZipsFan
Yeah, hope they cleared this with Coach Bowden. Absolutely. Coach Bowden has know Tressel for 30 years. Coach Bowden is not going to feel threatened by anyone, especially someone who has been as successful as Tressel. Our coach is always open to new ideas, but will always make his own decisions. yazan07
Another funny way to look at this is that arguably, our football coach isn't the best football coach working at the University of Akron. Not intended to be a slam to Bowden, but you know what I mean.
NewZipsFan
Watch it here. Tressel’s new title is "vice president for strategic engagement." $200,000 to make headlines? One of the better marketing ideas. He will be raising money. This President has a bold vision, and the guts to actually implement it. I, for one, am very impressed and very excited! K92
Dr. Z is right. $200,000 is a drop in the bucket for the exposure the University is getting for this hire. Very cheap advertising. Many more football fans are going to actually pay attention to, and possibly even converse with their Super Bowl party buddies about the UA commercial now. I am somewhat skeptical, but the exposure is great.

"We don't know yet" is not a bad position to take on many issues because we really don't know for sure how much of anything is going to work out in the long term. I just happen to personally believe from everything I know on the subject that there's a great likelihood that this move will produce a good return on investment for both parties, regardless of how long the partnership lasts. I also believe there's a fair chance it could last for more than a year or two. A lot will depend on what Tressel really wants to accomplish over what is likely to be his final decade of professional work. I don't think any of us knows enough about the inner workings of the man to predict that with 100% accuracy. Trying to evaluate everything in Tressel's life on the basis of football coaching overlooks the fact that there may be much more to the man than just looking for the highest-paying football job. Not intended to be a slam to Bowden, but you know what I mean. I will disagree with that one..... I personally think that OSU underachieved with arguably the most talented QB. They did not put him in the proper scheme for him to be as successful as he should have been. Obviously, this is the recent past. I don't think it's necessary to even start those comparisons. It's apples and oranges. Tressel is not ALLOWED near football, so let's appreciate what he will bring to Akron -- hopefully a lot of $$$$$. xu9697
I'm a huge Tressel fan and still an OSU fan. However, I will say that, while I think this is great, I am a little disappointed at the timing. I wish this could have happened in a couple weeks from now and not taken focus off Bowden and this class of players. I guess it all rolls into one big happy thing, but, since he is not starting until May 1, I find the timing a bit odd.

zen
nothing to lose (but 200k$) and high potential upside to bringing in Tressel? Joel Hammond at Crain's thinks there is indeed risk being under the NCAA's watchful eye. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/201...OGS04/120209949

While UA's discussions with Tressel were a pretty well-kept secret, you just can't keep something like this under cover for too long. Vague rumors have been floating around for weeks, and in recent days some of the street talk was starting to get close to revealing specifics. Once the decision was made, I don't think UA had any choice but to formally announce it immediately.

Let'sGoZips94
I am VERY impressed with how Proenza is approaching his 2020 plan. As stated in an earlier post, who better to highlight this plan other than Jim Tressel? Really nobody. The guy owns NEO. He has many many many many MANY connections. The job position is a complicated title for the person who can take this university to the next level, whether that be a bigger conference, new arenas, better academics, or anything else in the 2020 plan. On a side note, on campus we now have Terry Bowden, his brother, Terrell Buckley, Jim Tressel, Keith Dambrot, Caleb Porter, Chuck Amato, and sometimes Bobby Bowden (not working here, but still will be on campus at times). Yeah, I'd say Akron is the place to be. It must REALLY suck to go to Can't State.
