WE GOT SCREWED

Twenty-four previous posts in this thread. Nary a one mentioned that not once was Miami called for HOLDING.

Nada, zilch, zero and all that; no holding calls not even where the Zip defender was literally tackled right in

front of a referee. Shameless.

To say that the officials did not influence the outcome of the game is ludicrous. The officials determined the

outcome beyond a reasonable doubt. This conference has to go. Time to actively pursue the Big East.

That kind of officiating is completely unwarranted and deserves a CRIMINAL investigation.

While I agree that Akron's defense is woeful, this team is a solid three touchdowns better than Miami if the

game is fairly officiated. The botched false pass interference is mute because the Zips scored immediately

after the loss of down.

More important are two "gem'me" touchdowns "awarded" to Miami. One at the end of each half.

More important still are blatant bad calls of unnecessary roughness for hard hits. Football is not tiddly winks.

No player is wearing a pink tutu and ballet slippers. If anyone complains of helmet to helmet contact or

spearing, go review the game film and watch the Miami QB spearing at the end of at least of two of his runs.

He was never flagged.

The referees called a one sided game whether deliberately or unintentionally. They deserve a strong reprimand from the league. No one's excellent play should ever be penalized. It should be rewarded.

Game ball to Akron.

If the answer to bad officials is the Big East, it was a stupid question. TheBig East has historically been the most blatantly corrupt league in the country. To pretend otherwise show an ignorance of that league.

Better to play for a "corrupt" league than a league that no one even cares about.

The Big East is quickly becoming both.

I just get a kick out of the Big East being the solution to all of our problems.

How do we cure AIDS? The Big East

Solve the national debt? The Big East

Teenage pregnancy problem? The Big East

Etc.

Baby steps. It's not like we're in position to lobby for a spot in the Big 10. The Big East (and whatever it turns into over the next 10 years) is still a better option than the MAC. More diversity in team location, more TV, etc. It may be on a downswing, but it will always be better than the MAC.

The question isn't whether the BE is a better conference. The question is whether or not the Zips would be better off. We have a better shot at getting good in the Mac than the BE.

I'm not impressed by the Big Least anymore. I was more impressed when it had Pitt, WVU, Cincy, Syracuse, Louisville. (I'm not just looking at football and I know not all of those schools have/are leaving).

Their new footprint only adds a lot of travel to the teams, and prevents a lot of fans from travelling to the games. Would Houston and SMU really help us recruit in Texas? What did UCF do for the MAC? Who's going on a roadie to Boise or SD to see football? Does it really help all the other Zips teams to travel to New England several times a year?

I'm not impressed.

Anybody see what happened at midfield right after the game? One of the Akron lineman was walking toward the official who made the bad calls and was yelling at him. One of the UAPD ran over got between the official and the player and escorted the official off the field. There were also a couple of swings taken between an Akron player and a a Miami player(#9).

That was as intense a game as I have been at in the last 4 years. Good to see from Akron. Has to be frustrating though.

Nobody is apologizing for the officials. It was a poorly called/controlled game on their part. And,in the end the 2 calls allowed Miami to score.

However,it is frustrating to see the defense taking substitution penalties and at times being obviously confused and out of position during the 5th game into the season. That is not all lack of talent. I don't know how much Coach Bowden inserts himself into the defensive side of things. But,given what the offense is doing,it might only take a couple stops during the game to turn the scoreboard around. Saturday against BGSU will be a good time to do it.

He put himself in that position by burning his timeouts earlier in the half. It seems like every time Dysert had trouble getting an audible called because of the noise, we bailed him out with a TO. :wall:

It wasn't very smart to use up our timeouts earlier in the half. They were used on a 3rd-1 and 3rd-4, both times it backfired and Miami was able to get 15+ yard plays to convert for first down.

Really we only have two options to move up, the Big East and CUSA. Both are much better than the MAC. We are NEVER going to be an ACC or BigTen team, so it's a critical time to take whatever we can get. I'd rather be playing Houston or SMU on saturdays, than the crappy Eastern Michigan, Buffalo, and Bowling Green schools of the MAC. Fan travel really isn't something that worries me. Right now do we have to worry about fans traveling to Boise, when they don't even want to travel to InfoCision to watch a home game? I think CUSA is the only conference that would take us at this point. But the BE has added the markets of Houston, Dallas, Orlando, Memphis, and Philadelphia with their recent expansions. I'd would make sense to add Cleveland/Akron to that list.

Terrible Defense, but those 2 or 3 personal fouls on us at the end should not have been called.

I officiate soccer and I've been taught to not call a foul in the box unless it's "a good one" b/c it's such a big call to make and you have to be certain.

The same principle should be applied for close football games like the one yesterday.

Let the players play

Exactly.

Let the players play the dadgum game. Did anyone's helmet fly off in any of those supposed "personal foul" hits? NO. Let's not forget the other personal foul on the previous drive (I think it was their previous drive)? They were clearly shoulder pad to shoulder pad HARD hits. Why were all of those calls made by the line judge on Miami's sideline??

I was "schooled" by several long time Zips fans at the game who told me, "Miami ALWAYS gets the calls.. their the darling of the MAC".. Being new to the MAC, I did not know this history. The whole thing made me ill.

No one can expect this team to go from worst to first in less than half a season (ok - except me - the perennial glass FULL person) - so yes - our defense gave up a ton of points and yards -- cudos to Miami for a great game plan.. but when it was coming down to the wire - these kids were making stops (i.e 4th and 1s at Tennessee as well as last night) - but the refs made horrific calls that determined the outcome. I agree that is sucks we didn't have time outs left -- but they called them earlier in the half when they needed to. Again - if those bad calls weren't made - I believe the defense would have stopped them - we had the momentum - and you could see it and feel it.

I just feel sick for those players... But Coach Bowden will build them back up - and they will be ready for BG - no doubt about it.

You have just described what has become of officiating in football these days. It used to be refs were on the field to mostly enforce rules, they actually see, in a fair manner. Now, some rules are in place to change the "culture" of the game. Head-to-head contact is one of them.

Not every rule is administered exactly the same. For example, holding could be called on every play, but isn't unless it impacts the outcome of a play. Other penalties either happen or they don't....False start is that type of penalty. Head-to-head contact is another rule that should be administered like a false start, either happens or doesn't happen. If hit happens, then there is a penalty. In the case of the Zips, it didn't happen, but since rules are now in place to change the culture in lieu of punishing the breaking of a rule, it happens without any definitive evidence for it happening. Refs are now punishing teams for possibly breaking rules instead of actually breaking rules. It's all a bunch of BS and football is becoming increasing difficult to watch because of it.

I am talking about "The U" as in Miami (FL), and all of their 300 fans.

Let me get this straight...you say the Akron Zips outdraw the Miami Hurricanes in attendance? In football? American football, right? Even though they have had some well publicized attendance issues, they outdraw Akron by a large margin.

If it is irrelevant why is Can't always making such a big deal about hitting their marks? Not trying to be smart, just wondering.

Would the NCAA ever reprimand the Zips or someone like Eastern Michigan for not averaging 15k per home date, or is that all propaganda?

Here's an article about this issue from last year from the perspective of Ball State and Can't.

I can go back even farther than that I went back and found the thread from two years ago on Can't States attendance issues and they used the Wagon Wheel game(for their only sellout in the history of that dump they call a stadium).

The only reason I remember is because they put a whole marketing campaign together to get to the number.
