Chauncey Was Out - Now Back, and Kicking @ss

Makes me think back to a few seasons ago when we were talking about how fortunate the Zips were to go through whole seasons with minimal player time lost to injuries, suspension, etc. Seems like it's all catching up this season -- Q gone, Tree and Nick missing the first three games, Rico's ankle, Walsh's injury, and now Chauncey. The Zips are deep enough to handle the early MAC schedule, and the extra PT for some players will pay off later in the season. But the Zips will really need everyone healthy when they go up against OU in a little more than three weeks.

Two weeks? Good luck with that.

I know he is young and athletic, but I had my knee scoped two years ago and no way I would be running two weeks later.

But good luck, I hope he can do it.

Didn't Abreu have the same thing last season? If I recall correctly he was back at it in less than 2 weeks. And effective too.

Rico was out two weeks after his knee surgery last season and came back against VCU of all teams. He handled the VCU pressure defense pretty well so soon after surgery. Assuming that Chauncey's injury is no worse than Rico's, he could recover just as quickly.

Rest assured Chauncey is a tough guy and had the surgery already last week and came through with flying colors. Great surgeon and trainers and coaching staff expect nothing but the best for him and his family ask for your prayers that he will be elevated and strengthen to be better focused mind body and spirit wise. He has been playing hurt for a while but finally he realized he needed surgery and all parties involved were in agreement this was needed for a better Chauncey and team. The blessing was that he didn't give further damage as it would have taking longer to heal. So lets see if the best is yet to come...Go Zips

Thanks for the update lumberjack and my thoughts and prayers are with him. It will be great to have him back at full strength for the meat of the schedule and especially into the post-season. Go Zips!

Great comments. I chatted with Chauncey Sunday and he echoed the same thoughts. His re-hab has already begun

@lumberjack, many thanks to you for sharing this news with all Zips fans. It was painful to me to watch Chauncey trying to tough it out on the floor with an obviously hurting knee, and despite playing his hardest not being able to perform at the highest level we know he's capable of when he's completely healthy. It was a smart decision to go for minor surgery before something went wrong and major surgery was required. Looking forward to seeing Chauncey back at 100% as soon as he fully heals.

  • 2 weeks later...

I watched the game last night via the stream so it may be misleading but I thought Chauncey looked like he was getting around well. It was nice to see him back on the court. I'm hoping this week provides him an opportunity to get back into the flow and get comfortable. His stats aren't always visible in the box score but I think his leadership on the court and communication when he is out there is valuable.

I agree that he looked good out there last night. I think he needs to get into condition now. It's hard to stay fit when you're recovering from knee surgery.

Getting back into shape is a part of recovery, and arguably the most difficult part of it.

I would contend he is in good enough shape to play the handful of minutes he's getting. Harney's improved play is eating into Chauncey's minutes.

Was the final shot of the 2nd half a contributing factor to Chauncey's limited 2nd half minutes? Or did Walsh fall asleep at the wheel? I couldn't tell.

Whoever had that assignment, it seemed clear to me that he was getting an earful as Dambrot ran across the court to yell at him.

I watched online but my impression was that Chauncey seemed to be struggling with his ability to change directions on defense.

..... I watched online but my impression was that Chauncey seemed to be struggling with his ability to change directions on defense.

It also looked that way to me from my seat in the JAR. Last season Chauncey had more speed, quickness and explosiveness. He could not only knock down 3s but drive around his man into the lane for easy layups, slams and short jumpers. At the beginning of this season, I fully expected Chauncey to take over Q's role of driving the lane and taking it to the rim. But with his knee problem, Chauncey has scored exactly 20 2-point field goals in 22 games played -- less than a single 2-point field goal per game played. Needless to say, this also has to be affecting his ability to defend.
