Hilltopper
Bettencourt played a good game tonite. He really provided a spark off the bench and did a good job on #10. The switch to the 1-3-1 was the difference in the game.
ZachTheZip
Attendance was 5,400. The JAR was as loud as I've ever heard it. Student attendance over 800. Most for a game not involving Can't State. We'll break that record in seven days.
akronzips71
Coming back from 20 down teaches a team that they're never out of it. This will pay dividends later in the season if the Zips get way down in a critical game. Buffalo came out aggressive and the refs didn't call the first foul on them until past the midway point of the first half. That and every ball hitting net gave them huge confidence early. Great move by Coach Dambrot to go to the zone defense. Buffalo acted like they'd never seen one before and couldn't figure it out. Absolutely love the way Kretzer hustles on every play. He was everywhere, tipping the ball away, saving it from going out of bounds, rebounding his own missed shot, hitting a pair of huge 3s. Never thought I'd see Coach Dambrot leave a true freshman in the game during crunch time. Kretzer is as close to Nate Linhart as any Zips player I've seen in a long time. Absolutely hated the tech on Zeke for hanging on the rim. He was hanging because the Buffalo players mauled him as he went up for the dunk. Two minutes earlier a Buffalo player hung on the rim at the other end even longer, and no T. BS. That's what it was? On the audio French said it was for taunting. That one almost sunk us. But everyone hangs on the rim, and I really didn't see that on the video. It just looked like a dunk in traffic.
Dave in Green
Zeke taunting? Well that would be a new one. They didn't announce the reason for the T at the JAR, but everyone assumed it was for hanging on the rim. Perhaps Zeke said something to one of the Buffalo players who mauled him on his way up for the dunk, and it was interpreted as taunting. Maybe GameChngr44 will let us know what really happened. phil
I was at the game and assumed it was taunting. KD went crazy and would not let go of the ball as he yelled at the ref who made the call. I thought the ref was going to give him a T. I guess things even out when a Buffalo player took a shot in the paint with about 40 seconds left and it looked like he got fouled but the refs did not call it. The Buffalo coach went crazy. You have to KD credit for going to the zone. Buffalo could not penetrate and they had constant pressure at the 3 line. I don't think they scored more than a couple of baskets against the zone. KD went back to the man with about 3 minutes left and after Buffalo scored he went right back to the zone. When Alex is bad this team stuggles. On the first 2 possession Alex missed a layup and an open 6 footer and then followed with a turnover. He had a bad first half but a great 2nd half. I agree with a previous post. Being up by 4 points with 2 minutes left in the game is not a time to sit on the clock and have Alex Dribble until there is only 10 seconds left. This team struggles to score with only 10 seconds to work a play. It resulted in a time clock violation and the momentum shifted to Buffalo and they made a 3. Finally, we lost the ball twice on inbounds play lobbing the ball to our centers. It is time for a new inbounds play.! Great game to watch and great crowd!! RowdyZip
We're in the position where we are going to get everyone's best shot. We need to realize that. This.
Quickzips
I'll echo some other's thoughts here: I've not seen a crowd at the JAR that large and that into any game other than Can't in the decade I've been following the program. The volume in the second half when Kretzer and Walsh were hitting those threes rivals anything I've ever heard in that arena. Say what you will about our fanbase. When they decide to show up, they know how to bring it. Wish we could get more of that. You can say a lot of things about Zeke, both good and bad, but when he's up against a legit low-post scorer he brings his hard hat and his lunch pail. Not a lot of guys can shut down McCrae the way Zeke did tonight. On the flip side that tech was absolute horse kah kah, but at least it seemed to spark the Zips. More of the extended 1-3-1 zone please. I've never seen a single defensive adjustment so thoroughly fluster an opponent. Buffalo had no idea what to do when we went to that zone. It wasn't just that we went to the zone, we extended it out to about 25 feet, and it shut down their 3 point shooting. Great coaching by KD. Kretzer has gotten some flack for his recent shooting slump, but there is a reason KD leaves him out there for big minutes despite him being a freshman. The kid competes at a very high level. Going to be very fun to watch 3 more years of him. Another guy who has taken some flack all year who had a nice game tonight was Betancourt. He stepped up an played some nice minutes as the backup PG. Most troubling trend I am seeing right now is the Zips struggles to cleanly inbound the ball from their own baseline. I counted at least 3 dumb turnovers on inbound plays under our own basket. Buffalo overplayed Zeke and Pat and forced some bad turnovers down there. Have to get that cleaned up. Just as worrying for me is our perimeter defense. I really wish we had a defensive stopper like Q back on this team. I just don't have confidence in Gilliam, Walsh, Deji or McAdams to clamp down on a teams best 3 point shooter when we need it.

I watched that dunk a few times and just don't see anything wrong. Could have been something he said, but physically it only could have been hanging on the rim. The ironic thing was a Buffalo player had a similar dunk at the other end a few minutes earlier. Had a dunk, hung on for about 10 seconds longer than Zeke, got the and-1 call, and proceeded to yell something at one of the Akron players. Crazy after I think I've seen it all by MAC officials, they do something even more bizarre. But hey we won and I'm happy about that.
FromdaBurgh
Hey family...so let me put everyones speculation concerning Zekes T...he yelled at the player GET OFF ME...as he was coming down and the ref decided to call the T! The player called Zeke a "female dog"..but as you saw Zeke maintained his composure and we are now 6-0!
zippy5
Ah I thought he kinda elbowed/shoved the guy he dunked on when he came down. Good to see some fire from zeke.
johnnyzip84
Ah I thought he kinda elbowed/shoved the guy he dunked on when he came down. Good to see some fire from zeke I thought I saw something like that also, and frankly I was glad to see it. It must be incredibly frustrating to get hacked, held, shoved etc on half of your shot attempts. The dude was hanging all over him on the dunk. I bet the ref just heard some words and thought it was taunting so he gave him the T. I was not worried about Zeke losing his composure, KD was the guy would would not give the ref the ball back and he was the one yelling at the ref for the call. ZippyforPresident
Awesome atmosphere tonight. Those guys showed serious heart coming back like that after falling behind by 20 early on. A lot of teams would have folded after getting down that big early, coming back like that shows a lot of mental toughness. Also, the 1-3-1 was the difference tonight. Fantastic adjustment. Who knew it was Buffalo's kryptonite? Great job getting the W tonight Zips. Let's keep this thing going!

As I just pointed out in the appropriately named Testicular Fortitude thread, the defender was groping Zeke from the beginning to the end of that play, ending up with his left elbow disappearing in the groin area between Zeke's legs after he finally released the rim. The technical should have been called on the defender.
LZIp
I think it's finally time for a couple of people on here to put the "LeBron doesn't help Akron basketball" theory to bed. How did he help? The 1500 bobbleheads drew 5400 people? Akron basketball winning consistently helps Akron basketball.
