Sergeant Zip
From Deadspin A search of the Akron Municipal Court records shows Abreu was charged today with two third-degree felonies of drug trafficking and drug abuse. In Ohio, third-degree marijuana trafficking is charged when the amount in question is between one and five kilograms. The third-degree felony charge of aggravated possession includes "a presumption for a prison term." http://deadspin.com/5989346/star-akron-gua...ficking-chargesJosh Cribbs was charged with a 5th degree felony for "trafficking in marijuana." He was cleared after pleading guilty to marijuana possession.
LZIp
Yeah..im sure somebody wanted to throw away at a very minimum $4300 worth of drugs just to bust him.
Spin
SO, let's take the "innocent until proven guilty" route. How long until he is acquitted? Long after the season is over? Either way, we're screwed.
ZachTheZip
That's what I was wondering. If he sold to cops, or if someone said they got their stash from AA. If he did sell to cops, then just skip my "innocent until proven guilty" thread. Nothing indicates that he has actually sold anything. He signed for a package, and was promptly arrested. If he has been selling, I think it would have been listed with the other charges we've heard.
Zipgrad01
I have a very hard time believing that these drugs just happened to show up at Abreu's house when the cops had a sting going on. I hope I am wrong, but it sounds like they have been on to him for a while. The timing though, is amazing.
akronzips71
That's what I was wondering. If he sold to cops, or if someone said they got their stash from AA. If he did sell to cops, then just skip my "innocent until proven guilty" thread. According to what has been stated here, a drug dog hit on a package addressed to him. It was delivered and he accepted it. That is all we know for now. To make that case, they are going to have to establish who sent the package, and that AA in some way solicited the transaction. For all we know sitting here, he ordered sneakers on line and they put drugs into the box with the sneakers. And I challenge all of you to this: Lets say you get a package, which you may or may not have been expecting. You open the box, and it contains a pound of pot which you were NOT expecting. So what do you do? Call UPS and say you got the wrong package? Call the Police and report it, and possibly get arrested because they can? Flush the pot and call it a day? Sit there crapping your pants that the thugs will figure out who they sent it to by accident and will come looking for their drugs? Maybe you sit there for a few minutes thinking about your options when the Police crash in the door. Or maybe not. Just saying.....

I hope I am wrong, but it sounds like they have been on to him for a while. The timing though, is amazing. You are assuming fact not in evidence. The "sting" was that they delivered the packing knowing it contained pot. There is no reference so far to selling, confidential informants or anything else. Just a drug dog hitting on a package and AA accepting delivery. Now prove beyond a reasonable doubt he knew what was in the package before he opened it. w00t
In ten years I'll bump this thread and we'll all laugh that we once lost our starting PG for the season because he signed for a package that contained something that everyone can now buy at Wal-Mart (can you buy that crap at Wal-Mart in Colorado already?)... then hopefully we'll all cry because a couple of our own fans actually wished ill on him. I'm pissed at him for being stupid and letting the team and the fans down, but for the life of me I can't fathom why anyone here would want bad things to happen to him. originalrowdy
I'm telling you from my professional experience, for law enforcement to pull that bust off would require that Abreu and whoever he dealt with to have done this for quite some time. This is not a one-time thing and Abreu got unlucky. He would have had to do this multiple times and they have been tracking him. I'm worried that if he got nailed, whether he involved any teammates. dre22era
Everyone take a deep breath. I did 30 years in Law Enforcement and I have seen this before. They will need to be able to prove he knew what was in the package. Maybe they can. Maybe they can't. Anyone can send a package to anyone. Do not condemn him yet. At least let's see what the evidence shows. If it was delievered in the mail hes also looking at federal charges

skip-zip
From what I have seen so far, the "selling" is based on the quantity, not an actual sale. No. "Selling" would have been a lower charge. It's "Trafficking" (a much higher charge), because it's assumed that you are into big time selling because of the amount.

It's "Trafficking" (a much higher charge), because it's assumed that you are into big time selling because of the amount. For some perspective, a 3rd degree felony trafficking requires 1-5kg of the drug. That's 2.2-11lbs.

a-zip
Did you just compare the level of privilege of A-Rod and Lance Armstrong (another guy clearly about as in love with himself as you are) to Abreu? I don't even know how to respond to that. No, you are missing my point. I DO NOT HAVE SYMPATHY and will not pray for the people my kids go to see play, watch on TV and wait for their autographs. Each one of the people mentioned above has done something illegal. Their impact, based on their fame, has varying degrees but their impact is negative all the same. Why should I care so much about them. All I am saying is that I care more about the people/kids they influence (negatively).

RowdyZip
I think the saddest part of all of this is that the kid, if proven guilty, has ruined his life over something that is legal in several other states.

You used two guys with a net worth of nine figures each to make a point about a college kid whose net worth is probably his scholarship. Go hose yourself. If I was less charitable I'd say I hope your kid grows up to be the editor of High Times... but I'm better than you so I won't LOL.

RowdyZip
Sort of. Still illegal in our country. Right. Feds trump state laws, but still, no matter how you feel about pot, there should probably be more consistency in the laws on the books. Zipgrad01
My only hope is that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and that he accepted the package for this Austin Durgala guy. He looks like a class act. Why would he be hanging out with a punk like that?

akronzips71
"Alex Abreu, 21, was arrested for trafficking in marijuana and possession of marijuana at a resident on East Dartmore Street. Akron police said a drug sniffing dog detected the smell of marijuana at a delivery terminal and an undercover officer made the delivery. Once Abreu accepted the package, he was arrested. Read more: http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/news/local_new...2MuUxanWB" No observations, no sale. Just acceptance of a package. Do not be shocked when he walks. It may be probable cause for an arrest, it is far far from what is needed for a conviction. Unless they can tie him to the sender, he takes the stand and says: "I received the box and got arrested. I had no idea what was in it." Not gulity
Spin
OK, benefit of the doubt. Still, our season is wrecked. Not to mention the University's reputation. If he is innocent, and I hope he is, we will find out with one short sentence on the last page of the Beacon Journal sport section on a Wednesday.
