Dave in Green Posted October 2, 2013 Report Posted October 2, 2013 It's official that Oregon State will be without their leading rebounder from last season when they play the Zips in the Diamond Head Classic. Oregon State coach Craig Robinson said Tuesday that Eric Moreland has been suspended for the Beavers' first 14 regular-season games and that Devon Collier will sit out the season opener. The 6-foot-10 Moreland averaged 9.4 points and a team-leading 10.6 rebounds a game last season. Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted October 2, 2013 Report Posted October 2, 2013 When college players whine that they should be paid, do any of them consider they're getting free trips to Hawai'i and Puerto Rico while most other students are working at the Student Union? Quote

MDZip Posted November 11, 2013 Report Posted November 11, 2013 So if the Zips beat Oregon St., that win is going to look a whole lot less impressive. Coppin St. downs Oregon St. at Oregon St. Dammit. Quote

legendofzippy Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 The Diamond Head Classic Facebook page posted a graphic that's pretty cool. Akron comes off very well I think. This link should hopefully work: Diamond Head Classic Quote
LZIp Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 unfortunately, I cant read hardly any of that. Quote

It may be temporarily unavailable, the link you clicked on may have expired, or you may not have permission to view this page. edit: Whoops, it helps to log in! lol IAC -- you can let me know if you plan to attend, as it doesn't look like much of a throng. I'm still hoping to have some giant heads available to wave. Does anyone have experience with those devices? Quote
Z.I.P. Posted November 15, 2013 Author Report Posted November 15, 2013 Vote in the poll. We're only getting three percent in the favorite's race! Barely ahead of the home team. Quote
Z.I.P. Posted November 27, 2013 Author Report Posted November 27, 2013 Not sure whether anyone has seen our opening opponent, Oregon State play yet (was the Maryland game televised?), but I did have an opportunity to see them last night versus a very weak (average D-II caliber) Southern Illinois-Edwardsville team. I think this is SIUE's first year in Division I. The Beavs basically ran away with superior athletic talent over the first 15 minutes, getting up I think by 28 and coasting to a 52-28 halftime lead, but then kind of fell asleep and allowed the slower opponent to cut the lead in half in the second half before securing a 101-81 victory. OSU is a team that can score a lot of points in a hurry -- either from the perimeter or the interior. They have a 6-4 guard Roberto Nelson who's averaging almost 30PPG (games of 36, 24, 31 17 and 24 last nite) and 6-8 PF Devon Collier who's had at least 3 games of +20 pts this year. For the benefit of coaches, I shall provide what is Oregon State's Achilles heel: They play a soft 1-3-1 zone defense, allowing the opponent to shoot over, or to lob the ball down low against what appears a rather lazy defense. I'm looking forward to seeing how Tree handles this set-up, whether we are able to pass the ball both ways, and just how many points we can put up vs the Beavers. Honestly, I feel like we might have to score 90 to win this game -- but am confident of our ability to do so -- or potentially to use our defensive pressure to slow up the river rats and allow us the use of the low post game. Too bad Zeke didn't have a chance to play against this team -- I think a double-double would have been guaranteed. Quote
Z.I.P. Posted December 14, 2013 Author Report Posted December 14, 2013 FINALLY, I have a legitimate reason for not taking the wife to Hawaii for the Diamond Head Classic. Yet greater justification for our meister to not visit the Kingdom of Ka Pa'e 'aina 'o Hawai'i Nei for the holidays: Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports on Friday the 13th of December (what a propitious date!) that plans are going Full Speed Ahead for a visit by President Barack Obama to the Stan Sheriff Center, almost certainly for the 2:30 PM game between our Zips and the Oregon State Beavducks, or whatever. The news is raising the possibility that the game could be transformed from a neutral game contest before 2000-3000 fans, to potentially the first sellout of 10,100 seat Sheriff Center in many years. Good thing meister doesn't need tix, but if he did, well, maybe I could make arrangements through my Hawaii Democratic Party channels. Quote

I like the p.s.: We're looking into the Sheriff Center policy on giant heads. (Christmas) tree, kd, bo, and sc (santa claus, whoelse?) Not necessarily in that order Quote
