Parents of players, and people with way too much interest in high school football. No group can be more petty or willing to tear someone down because something good is happening to someone else instead of "their" player.

This "Dennis offer" was a big topic of discussion around the fire on Saturday night. The word that is spreading in my area is that Bill Dennis did in fact call in a favor. He is friends with one of the coaches on Akron's staff and the offer has 1 big stipulation. The kid can't accept it. Ha. What I'm hearing is that they offered him as a favor to try and generate some interest from other schools.

I've followed college football for quite a while. I've never heard of such a thing.

Well I hope it works. A four year scholarship to play on the scout squad seems a little extreme.

Maybe I am being a little harsh as he plays on a team that is always terrible. Only time will tell I guess.

Dennis' stats at Rittman don't exactly jump off the page, but he obviously had intangibles colleges are looking for. He caught 31 passes for 221 yards and five touchdowns for a Rittman team that finished 2-8 last fall.

However, the athletic Dennis has attended a number of college camps where he's been able to demonstrate his talents.

Dennis has been hand-timed at 4.49 in the 40 at the BGSU football camp. He set the Rittman school track records in the 200-meter dash (22.6) and 400 (50.49) as a sophomore, but was slowed by a pulled hamstring most of his junior track season.

I was thinking about it last night and concluded my anti-Rittman bias was definitely showing. I am going to try and keep an open mind until I can see Dennis first hand when the Falcons play the Indians this fall.

When I read your previous post, "This is a bit puzzling. I am all for UA bringing in talent from Wayne County, but I must be missing something here. I hope I am wrong"

my first thought was man this guy must be really be anti-Rittman to write such a harsh comment. Glad to see you have reconsidered.

As someone with no dog in the fight, I can assure you that this is an unimpressive pickup, and is not the result of parents with sour grapes.

I mean that as no slight to Dennis, but 220 yards on a season ... I'm pretty sure Harris has a GAME in his career with those yardage numbers.

See for yourself. Check that "highlight" reel. That kid is not a D1 college player, period.

Seeing that this is your first post, I have a feeling that you do have a dog in this fight. :D

I don't, but this topic was posted on a message board where I am a member. I don't have any ties to any players, though.

However, I do have a relative that is a coach in the conference (different team). As such, I've seen Dennis play a few times. It was a giant running joke among many people across the conference that the coach (Dennis' dad) tried to showcase his son ... which didn't work well. That highlight reel is pretty indicative of the "good" plays I saw out of him. He's not tall or particularly fast on the field. He doesn't play strong. His leaping ability is nothing exceptional.

Don't get me wrong. He's an athlete. Just not a D1 college football athlete.

Everyone keeps talking about Berger and Dennis both playing in the same league. Something is definitely wrong here. Does anybody know if Berger is actually playing for us? Did he go play for another team? I dont see him on the roster. I looked it up. Blake dennis had 220 yeards receiving last year. Berger had 1378. He also had 79 catches. He had 42 catches for 750 yards as a junior. He was a 1st team All-Ohio player and the MVP of the North/South game. How is it possible that we give a scholarship to Dennis and let a player like Berger get away. I just dont get it. This has to be a mistake

This was what I was alluding to in my posts. They did indeed play in the same conference -- the Wayne County Athletic League. Those numbers, while not COMPLETELY indicative of the disparity between the players, are certainly telling.

Berger had a (much) better QB and a more pass-oriented offense at Norwayne, so there were certainly reasons for his numbers looking at least a little better, all else being equal. I mean, we are comparing two players whose teams have gone 27-2 and 3-17, respectively, over the last two seasons. Obviously, one team is scoring more, which will inevitably lead to that team's players having better numbers (at least, as a general rule).

However, even if we take away the numbers, and we just look at game film, it's pretty obvious which player has the higher-caliber talent. Both are athletes. One is a better football player.

Honestly, that Norwayne (Berger, Harris) team's receivers were pretty special anyway. As a player, I never had any love for Norwayne, and the years since have given me no reason to cheer for them until playoff time (gotta cheer for the conference team), but watching them has made me a believer in the talent on that team.

Having also seen Rittman (Dennis' school) ... I don't know how the offer came about, but it doesn't seem to be based on football talent.

For what it's worth, since they do play in the same conference, they play head-to-head every year. Norwayne has outscored Rittman in the head-to-head games the last two years by a score of 130-7.

This has got to be a joke. Am I missing something here? I've watched this kids highlight video 10 times. It's a joke. Where is this great route running and speed? I've watched the highlight films of every other committ we've gotten and I'm impressed. This is pathetic. Is Dennis related to one of our coaches?
