Miami,

We all know that they are bad this season. Really bad. They might be the worst team in the country this year. I have said form the start that this is an win. After the way the Defense played against NIU, this game should be no problem.

It was long ago and I've put it in a distant memory box, but every time we play Miami U I'm reminded of the 1994 and 1995 games when the late Miami HC, Randy Walker, was shopping himself for a bigger job and he hammered the already down Zips with 50-0 halftime scores in both years. Walker ultimately went to Northwestern and Faust was fired after the 1994 year, never to coach again. I'd like to think it would be fitting if Akron could look back at this Saturday's game as when Zips football turned it around in a karmic payback at the expense of the Redhawks.

I will be happy if we win 2-0. We are far from being able to make statements against anyone.

Akron is rising and Miami is falling. An injury report might help in discussing the outcome, but I like our chances. Miami has had a tough early schedule, like the Zips. Akron is the last of three in row as part of their mid-schedule that I would guess they had penciled in as W's. I'd like to think that they made a mistake inviting us to their homecoming celebration as we would like to help them obtain the distinction of going 0-12 in 13, while we cure a road win famine. I wonder if Gerry will be watching?

There will be fight in dem Redhawks. 0-12 is a real possibility for them and Akron is their last best hope for salvation.

I sat in the box/loge next to Gerry and a group of friends during the Ohio game. Gerry literally had his head buried in his hands several times, then just got so disgusted that he left.

Maybe Notre Dame was on the tube. Anyhow, ole Gerry did hit the record books in a game against Ohio. It was 1994 and the first ever game in Div IA when two 0-10 teams met on the gridiron. Akron won and it was at the Rubber Bowl. Ohio's HC used to be an assistant for Faust and, of course, they were friends. Never thought I'd be looking back at the Faust years with admiration, but he did have a good year or two, however, they always seemed like they should have been better. Even his 7-3-1 team in 1992 should have gone 9-2. Anyhow, I liked the guy. I was at the 2005 Motor City Bowl and he stopped climbing some stairs and smiled and waived at me and my son after I whispered maybe a little too loudly 'hey there goes Gerry Faust'.

Gerry and Ohio's coach, Tom Lichtenberg, had both been fired just prior to that titanic battle. Ohio jumped out to an early lead, then tanked. Ohio had been picked to finish either first or second in the league that year. They won the last four games of the 1993 season...then went 0-11 in 94. Tough to be a Bobcat fan back then.

Weather forecast right now for Oxford: sunny, 63 degrees, 0% chance of rain and winds out of the SW@5-15. Should be a beautiful day for a Redhawk beat-down.

The road trip to Bowling Green was disappointing so four of us are trying it again Saturday. Four-hour drive but should be well worth it - LET'S GO ZIPS!!!

Betcha this game gets "pillow fight of the week" on ESPN's Bottom 10 (which the Zips have somehow avoided this year).

As I suspected. The Zips have still avoided the official list and beating Miami might well keep them off the whole season. Miami is #2 and WMU is #4 although I think WMU is worse than Miami - and WMU has become the first team to be eliminated from bowl consideration. We can make Miami the next.

The Michigan Wolverines know about gravity all too well. After avoiding disaster against Bottom 10 stalwarts Akron and U-Conn't earlier this season, Michigan's luck finally ran out in a 43-40 loss in four overtimes at Penn State on Saturday.

.

.

.

While "Gravity" brought in a whopping $124.3 million at the box office in its first 10 days in theaters, we're guessing ticket sales will be significantly smaller for Saturday's Pillow Fight of the Week between winless Miami (Ohio) and 1-6 Akron. Like Bullock and Clooney in "Gravity," the RedHawks and Zips are tethered to nothing but each other, while spiraling into darkness.

Pretty sure Gerry and Tom coached that game as their records include the result. Our new AD back then, Bobinski (sounds like a clown name), fired Faust at the end of the 1994 season after Gerry recommended him for the job. They knew each other from Notre Dame. Almost went to the 1994 Ohio game with an Acme paper grocery bag (eyes cut out) over my head ala old-time New Orleans NFL fans, but I had something more important to do like unclog a drain.

Anyhow, the earlier 1994 Miami blowout of the Zips seemed to be the final nail in Faust's coffin. I say, win this one for Gerry and the fans (those diehards that are left - most of whom are on Zipsnation).

I'm not sure it's possible for us to consider any opponent "no problem", but this is a great opportunity to finally get a road win. It will have been 5 years by the time this game starts.
