mes102 Posted October 28, 2013 Report Posted October 28, 2013 Lady Zips marketing theme for 2013-2014 Here's their media day press conference: One big note is Sina King is out for the season with an injury. It will be hard to replace her consistent double-double numbers this season, but there's some younger players that can hopefully combine to give the numbers King was projected to get this season. Expect Anita Brown to start in the Taylor Ruper starting spot in the rotation. I expect Plybon to be contending for quality minutes mid-MAC season. Kest seems to like Scipio, but with Cassell and Barilla at that position, she probably won't see much time this season on the floor. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted October 28, 2013 Report Posted October 28, 2013 What a joke that Kacie Cassel didn't make the All-MAC teams. Not even third team or honorable mention. All she did was lead the entire NCAA in assists per game. Quote

Exactly, and with the new rules and the 10 second backcourt violation finally in effect for women's hoops, that will help this team score MORE points. They're a very good FT shooting team, and also can pressure at times. With Tecca as healthy as she's ever been, this team can be so scary(if everyone else stays healthy), you may see them scoring 80, 90, and even 100 points on a regular basis this season. Cassell had complete command of that offense last season, and with one last full offseason for her senior season, I expect her to average close to 10 assists per game, if not more. Quote

Adding the time line will be huge. Too many teams would milk 20 or 25 seconds dribbling around in the backcourt before trying to score. Too many teams that would love to win a game by a score of 2-0. It will be hard to replace her consistent double-double numbers this season, but there's some younger players that can hopefully combine to give the numbers King was projected to get this season. Two things: (1) The Sina King loss is tough. Lots of returning starters from last year, and that's a big loss of talent/chemistry for a team hoping to finally get that MAC title. (2) A Google search of "Sina King" yielded an unexpected result. Quote
Dave in Green Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 Charlie Cole would be proud! I miss that guy...he was such a great competitor, sportsman, and "villain." Amen. The people who've made the biggest impressions on me throughout my life have been the biggest characters, and Charlie Coles was a giant among basketball coaching characters. Quote

Zach, I watch 20-30 NCAA D-1 and D-2 women's games a season (for like 25 years) and I have never seen a team do what you say, except when they have the final shot, under 30 seconds remaining. I just don't see the rule change making much difference -- unless some teams decide to press full-court now. And unfortunately, I suspect it will bring about even more blowouts than in the past -- and the women's game is a lot more troubled with blowouts than the mens game. Quote

Sina King suffered life threatening blood clots in her legs. Stop the unwarranted rumor mongering. Since I am on campus nearly every day I had the opportunity to speak with Sina (A most delightful young woman) on many occasions. Though cleared by doctors to play, a decision in the best interest of Sina was made to medical red shirt her. Sina gets an opportunity to work toward her Masters on the Zippers nickel. She deserves it. Quote
MDZip Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 So the ladies pretty much equal the men's pre-season prediction with a 1st place MAC East finish (who would have thought the Zips would eventually be the team to eliminate the Bowling Green stranglehold on the East? Kudos to Coach Kest and the team) and two first teamers. Makes the loss of Sina King even more painful, kind of like losing Quincy Diggs from the men's team last year. Still a good team, but had the potential to be a very, very good team. Having lost a senior season to injury once myself, really feel badly for Sina King. Quote
Dr Z Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 BREAKTHROO, I like it. I might have went gold on the ROO, but still well done. Quote
mes102 Posted November 2, 2013 Author Report Posted November 2, 2013 Lady Zips up 41-19 at the half over DII Lake Erie College. Coach Kest not happy with the defensive effort according to the radio call. - Hannah Plybon got the start. I knew she was going to be good enough to start as a true freshman, but thought this early in her career that Coach Kest might of went with a sophomore to start. Only exhibition, so possibly just starting her today to see what she could contribute. Minutes/Points/Rebounds/Assists in first half: Luburgh -16/16/1/2 Tecca- 15/14/4/2 Cassell- 15/0/0/3 Plybon- 14/4/1/1 Young- 10/1/4/1 Gibson- 10/0/2/2 Brown- 7/2/2/2 Nunan- 5/2/0/0 Barilla- 4/2/0/0 Ricketts- 4/0/0/0 Guyton- 0/-/-/- Simone- 0/-/-/- Scipio- 0/-/-/- Quote
ZachTheZip Posted November 2, 2013 Report Posted November 2, 2013 Really not much we can learn from this game. It mostly serves coach Kest by giving her film to make the players work harder on defense. Quote

It mostly serves coach Kest by giving her film to make the players work harder on defense. You can still get an idea on what the rotation could be for the regular season in these exhibition games. Also gives you a chance to see the true freshmen play that most likely will get red-shirt to give you what the future holds for the program as well. Quote

mes102 Posted November 9, 2013 Author Report Posted November 9, 2013 Lady Zips play a really good Tennessee Tech team on Tuesday at a weird tip-off time. Overall, just a weird tip-off time for both Akron basketball teams that morning(MBB: 3am ET, WBB: 10:30am ET). Need a solid outing and win on Tuesday to get the momentum when playing #14 Dayton that Friday. Quote

GoZips Posted November 10, 2013 Report Posted November 10, 2013 The Lady Zips opened their season with a "cream" puff; blowing them out 98-69 (Florida Atlantic). Our neighbors to the south choked on this tough cookie, barely escaping with a 91-88 win. Yep, the Buckeyes flattened Florida Atlantic, the same Florida Atlantic, by three points. You still think the Lady Zips aren't worth your time and a few shekels? Quote

You still think the Lady Zips aren't worth your time and a few shekels? Oswho is in a whole rebuilding phase down in Cowlumbus. Someone told me their current coach would of recruited Plybon really hard, but he wasn't there during her recruiting, and Foster wouldn't even consider DIII or DIV players in Ohio. They're trying to broaden their recruiting in Ohio, but the MAC schools are stepping up. There's another recruit that Akron is going after that may be as good of a recruit as Plybon was for Akron.
