Zips look to strengthen STVM pipeline

My point is that he is not that great of a football player. Not top 10 ranking IMO.

good point. See Mich commit Michael Ferns out of St. Clairsville. I personally do not know alot about Booker, besides that he is a big time recruit. But if it based on athleticism and speed rather than football playing ability, Ferns is in a similar boat.

thread title fail by me. Who is STVM?

STVM is the abbreviation for Saint Vincent-Saint Mary.

STVM is the Catholic high school in Akron that has produced many, many quality players and coaches over the years.

Coach Dambrot once coached basketball at STVM and had a young player affectionately nicknamed "the King" or LBJ

who now plays for the Miami Heat in the NBA.

Capice?

lol. Im aware of all of the connections. I've just always used SVSM or simply St V. Maybe wrong, but I am not an Akron native.

Story from ABJ.

It was noted above that Dante Booker is a physical freak, but, IMHO, Newman Williams is the best player on the team. With his height and athleticism, Dante has more "up side." But in the STVM games I've seen Newman has been far-and-away the most productive player on the field. Even on offense, if STVM needs critical yards, they don't give the ball to Paris Campbell, they hand the ball off to Newman Williams. He's a beast.

Michael Ferns out of St. Clairsville.

Little known fact (I think). St. Clairsville is the only high school go have two Zips players go on to the NFL: Shawn Vincent and Robert Lyons. Interestingly, their position coach back in the 80s is Mike Woodford, the Zips DB coach now.

True. But at least STV plays tough competition. Ferns plays in a weak area and he hasn't been tested.

I see Booker never starting. At least not at LB. Maybe he grows a little and moves to DE.

Thanks for the share. I am from the area.

Is that why you were questioning Ferns? Have you seen him play? I haven't but he seems like a solid recruit.

Yes. Ferns blew up between his sophomore and junior seasons (I believe) at some camps. He then accumulated offers from great schools all over the country. Note that I am not trying to hate and wish him the best. Because its uncommon for a kid form our area to be such a touted recruit (probably biggest since Joey Galloway?), many people have paid close attention and share a similar opinion to me. I've caught a few games, including the state championship game a year ago, and, in my opinion, he just doesn't make the plays you would expect out of a recruit of his ranking, or really any plays at all. When I've watched many other players on the team stuck out more than him, but isn't necessarily a bad thing. Both WRs from last season went D1 (one to Purdue, one to Ohio), and the RB who graduates this year is going to YSU.

Ferns is a great person, has hard work-ethic, and is a great athlete, but I am not impressed by the football player Michael Ferns. I would assume coaches like Saban, Meyer, Hoke, etc know a little more than me, but we will see I guess lol.

Sorry to go off topic.

I don't think one more off topic comment is worth a new thread. We have a top 10 WR from our HS headed to Iowa State next year. He is a big, athletic kid with speed, but I would have rated him as a DB. He runs down field and the QB heaves a ball in his direction and he closes to make a catch. It just looks more like a DB going after an int. Maybe he shows route running skills in camps where there are better QB's. I hope they redshirt this kid; so you all can see him when ISU visits Akron.(Wait a min. that game may be in '19.)

Good info on Ferns, thanks. Seems like a good kid. I don't like scUM, but hope he does well.

Dante Booker was being questioned, but I don't know about that one. Bill Greene is a good follow on Twitter and he posted this last week:

@BillBankGreene 22 Nov

Dante Booker just played the best game I've seen from a defensive player this season. St Vincent rolled over Hubbard. Looking to repeat.

He fidgets too much between plays. Always adjusting something about his uniform or pads. It may seem like a petty thing to pick on, but I don't like that kind of nervousness in a player. To me, it is a sign of a lack of confidence. He was a really good high school player, but not BCS level. Michigan will be wasting a scholarship with him. A little too passive as well. He made a horrible error in committing to Michigan while in 10th grade. High school coaches should do a better job of steering kids away from early decision such as that.

I have a relative who coached this guy in high school. He was one of the best high school LBs I have ever seen..tough, fast, smart, "a nose for the ball", etc. He couldn't get on the field at MSU much at all. He was way better than Ferns in high school playing against much better top tier competition around Columbus and just wasn't able to make the next step. Some guys just don't make the transition well.

St. Clairsville has a kid by the last name of Stewart who just finished his 10th grade season. I saw he was on the sidelines before the Penn State game last weekend. Keep an eye on him.

You're suggesting a coach tells a player not to accept a full-ride from a school like Michigan? As a coach you'd have a very short career.

He doesn't have anything in writing yet. The only offer that matters is the letter of intent. Verbals don't count.

I'm suggesting he advise his players to keep their options open when they are in 10th grade.
