Captain Kangaroo
I see we've got an 11am start time so we can be on the coveted ESPNU? Sucks to be me. My basketball team takes the floor at noon. I hope there are other families out there who don't get to attend due to their kid's Saturday morning activities. It'll make me feel better. Jalapeño Zippy
I may be in the same boat Captain. Waiting for my son's schedule but he will be tipping off this Saturday with his first game...I just don't know the time. Please be at 8 or 9. Please, Please, Please... GP1
What is wrong with you people? Do I have to solve every problem? Listen, when I was growing up, my father missed a lot of my events because he was working and putting food on the table. I never once complained because I knew it was how we ate. Solution = Tell your kids you have to work and can't attend their games. Go to the Zips game instead. The kids will never know. If the kids complain, ask them if they like to eat. If they say yes, tell them your working is how they get to eat. They will understand. Problem solved.
Dave in Green
Problem solved or worse problem created by lying to your kids? Now every father whose kid reads ZN.o is going to have to explain to them that daddy would never take the advice of that no good scoundrel GP1 and lie to them. This is great but I must admit GP1's calculated story was fantastic as well. If my little guy wasn't such a die hard, more than me at times I think, I would porbably go without him. But he knows the entire schedule, which games are home, which games are away and which games are supposed to be on TV. He loves him some Zips. And I love the memories that the Zips have created for me with him!

For those without kids, I can pass along that Saturday mornings are usually full of kid's games, music/dance lessons, etc. Football and basketball games in the morning are not family-friendly. Ask me in 5 years, when my son is off to college, and I won't be grousing. But at his point in my life, missing an all-too-rare non-cupcake opponent at the JAR due to an 11am tip-off kinda sucks. You guys from the south are way too sensitive. Have some sweet tea, some pork cracklin's, scratch on a washboard and relax.

skip-zip
I have to agree with all of you that this game time is ridiculous. Saturday daytime kids activities are common. I understand playing football and basketball on odd weekday nights in order to meet TV schedules, but Saturday mornings don't cut it. Dave in Green
We all agree that the starting time is not ideal. The real question is whether the tradeoff for national television is worth a few sacrifices to help elevate the program. This is really the same issue as the Zips' messed-up early schedule this season. It was a terrible strain on the team, and some on this forum complained for weeks. But it resulted in more national TV and future invitations to more prestigious tournaments. Would everyone be willing to trade a more even schedule and more regular starting times in exchange for less national TV and less prestigious tournaments like the Zips used to get? GP1
@Dave, I'll go one step further. Getting selected to play on ESPN as often as we are now is a sign of how far the program has come. We are a MAC program "in demand" for ESPN. They have an 11 AM slot open and they want to fill it with Akron. To me, that says a lot of good about the program. Absolutely. But as I said, it's still not the same as accepting a weekday evening football game, as we've done in the past. Or, getting to play a South Carolina or Iowa State in Hawaii on an NFL football night. This is an intra-conference game, on a Sat. morning, on ESPNU. If you live in the Eastern time zone, you are doing something else at this time, and most of the rest of the country is just waking up. The Zips still have a way to go to be in demand for prime time national TV. But you don't get there overnight from being previously ignored. You have to earn your way by putting on a good show in whatever time slot they initially give you. Zips need to put on a really good show Saturday. One step at a time. Dave in Green
@johnnyzip84, I absolutely agree with you. If the Zips look past Miami to Toledo they could be in big trouble. In fact I almost posted earlier that starting a Toledo thread before the Miami game was over might bring bad luck. In this case, my one step at a time comment was strictly focused on the national TV aspect, which the Miami game lacks.

skip-zip
Looking forward to see how the Zips defend Rian. I'll say this... When I first saw him 2 years ago at the JAR, I thought he totally had that WOW factor. In just one viewing of his performance, I thought I was seeing the most gifted guard in the MAC, and he was only a sophomore. I'll be curious to see where he's at two years later. I just hope he doesn't WOW me this time.

I just hope he doesn't WOW me this time. A couple of years ago he was pretty much a one trick pony for the Rockets and could drop 30 pts on any given night. Now he is surrounded with four other guys that can put the ball in the hole. I've seen the Rockets play four times this year and he doesn't always seem to look to score like he did back then. I'm very impressed with their center Boothe. He's got strength inside and can also step out and hit the jumper. Drummond and Weatherspoon also have great offensive skills. I've never been a fan of Juice Brown but on occasion he can beat you as well. On top of that the Rockets do have some depth off the bench. Obviously, the Rockets can't defend very well but they can easily outscore their defensive liabilities against most teams. It will take a very crisp and clean offensive game, meaning LOW TURNOVERS, to beat them. However, lets take care of the sweaters first. akzipper
671 tickets available per backthezips.com It pulls the numbers from ticketmaster, which I believe isn't really accurate. I doubt we see more than 4,000 at the game.

Dr Z
Jay Bilas has Toledo ranked #68. Toledo has a top-10 offense in KenPom.com but a defense rated outside the top 250. Toledo's schedule has not helped the cause, with only one win against a team rated in the top 100. This is a good team, but it has to do well in MAC play to garner some national acclaim.
