Ellen gives Zips something for their bulletin board

"Toledo (14-2, 2-1) plays at Akron (11-5, 3-0), 11 a.m. Saturday on ESPNU, in what could be the passing of the torch in the Mid-American Conference."

Can someone tweet this to Tree?

That ticks me off. So, after our almost decade-long run of success in the MAC, 7 straight title games, and 2 straight regular season titles, he's suggesting that a team coming off of probation with a 2-1 start should somehow be more highly regarded then us if they win this 1 basketball game?

Thanks for giving us our due respect.

This is the same guy who had Bowling Green as one of the top 5 basketball programs in Ohio. Who cares what he has to say about this game?

His reasoning:UT's entire starting five averages double figures. It has an elite point guard in Julius Brown (13.4 points) who averages 7.2 assists, double what Akron's top two guards had combined. And it has an elite power forward in J.D. Weatherspoon (11.3 points, 6.0 rebounds) to counter Akron's leading scorer and rebounder, Demetrius Treadwell (13.2/ 7.8). It's a contrast in styles for UT and Akron....But where Toledo seems well oiled, scoring 84.2 points a game and shooting 48.6 percent from the floor, the Zips struggle just to make it to the final buzzer on top.Poor decisions inside the final four minutes and suspect foul shooting make every game a nail-biter for Akron."We have to win until we clean these problems up,'' head coach Keith Dambrot said. "It is what it is right now. Eventually we can't make those mistakes. It's going to bite us." And Toledo has the teeth to do it.Sounds like they go with the theory of starting their best players. Some think it's better to finish with your best.FYI

The torch passing comment might be a little early, but I have to agree with his logic, however, this is a team that lost to WMU and barely beat Buffalo so they are no juggernaut. Zips can win this one.

Toledo has an unusually stable lineup. They're one of the few teams in the country where the same 5 starters have started all 16 games. The 5 starters are the team's 5 leading scorers, and all of them have averaged 26-33 minutes per game, with the top players off the bench averaging no more than 16 minutes. So there's been no question from day one about Toledo's lineup, and no performance problems, injuries or other incidents to disrupt the team's stability. All that experience playing together should make them the most cohesive team in the MAC, which makes their struggles against WMU and Buffalo all the more puzzling.

Their struggles are not puzzling at all. When you only have five contributors on a team, neutralizing any of those players has a greater impact on that team's overall performance. Take away two players with defense, and they'll struggle.

The Blade: Styles Differ

“We’re a better transition team,” (point guard Julius) Brown said. “They’re a little tougher team, if you ask me, as far as rebounding and things like that.”

“Unless we play physical, we can’t beat anybody,” Dambrot said.

I'm always interested in how we scheme to get points. Hope we have a plan, and it is not dribbling/passing the shot clock down to minimize Toledo's possessions.

The Zips' advantages:

The Zips know how to win.

The Zips are at home. Big crowd.

Toledo's defense isn't anything special. The Zips outside shooting percentage is very high when they don't have a hand in their face.

"Harney 20 Rule" is in effect.

Forsythe continues to play with energy.

No one at the mid-major level has been able to counteract Tree.

Toledo's Advantages:

They have a star that can pile up a ton of points. The Zips historically let opposing big-time scorers do what they want.

Anyone's press ruins the Zips and creates buckets of turnovers. Toledo's will do the same.

When Betancourt or Evans are on the court, it is 6-on-4 in Toledo's favor.

The Zips will struggle in a close game due to the well-discussed FT shooting and turnovers.

Winning in double OT at OU is no fluke. If Diggs can slow Pearson down, the Zips should win.

In Ohio, you can start serving at 5:30 am (source). You just need to find a place that's open. Back in the day, I know a few rapscallions that would work midnight shift and head to the bar early in the morning. Bars located close to mills.

I see. Was in Wrigleyville for a game this summer and they had all the glasses lined up under the taps at a bar outside the stadium waiting for 10 am. Figured that was the law most places.

This is a legitimate question...why does Elton always disrespect the Zips? Does anyone have any insight on this topic?

That's my point. He seems anxious to dethrone us and discount all of our consistent success with a Toledo team that's come out of nowhere, and is only 2-1 in conference play, and hasn't been all that impressive? Even if we lose, there's still a ton of games left, and Toledo has already shown that they will lose league games this year.

He's relying on selected stats. It's just very, very early to be making that kind of statement, and very disrespectful of our long record of success.
