Z.I.P.
Surprised no one has mentioned this?If was a popular topic at the spring game tailgate.Very sad to hear about the passing of Joe Curl -- who I knew from his days at Stephen F. Austin prior to joining the Cougars for a long and successful run. As I recall, one of Coach Kest's first major wins was vs Houston in a game @ Akron. Was hoping when I read the heading that she would take the Gonzaga job, which is being eyed by Hawaii coach Laura Beaman. In any case. best wishes and mahalos to coach Kest. You never know, maybe she'll stay...

skip-zip
After hitting a success "Goal"?? And after losing a big group of Seniors? If that's not the perfect time to move along if you've been considering it, there probably isn't one. If that's not the perfect time to move along if you've been considering it, there probably isn't one.Timing is everything. This may not be the time to move on. Jodi brings in her best recruiting class ever. Fearful that if she leaves she will take her prize recruit (Alli Ball) with her. That would sting. There are plenty of good candidates to replace her, since she has the Lady Zips on top. For my money Glenn Box would make a great follow on coach. Jodi is likely to invite him to Houston. Sad. mes102
I've been saying this for a little over 14 months now. Once this team made it to the NCAA tournament, I expected her to leave. If I was the AD, I would be having discussions with Kest, Jackson, and Box right now. I would try everything I can to keep either Jackson or Box here as the head coach. Possibly bring Jakubick as an assistant. I don't think this team will miss that much with either Jackson or Box here. The team went to another level when Ruffing left and Box came in. Jackson is the heart and soul of the recruiting process at Akron. Not Kest.It eventually was going to happen, but we'll see.If Kest doesn't leave for another two years, I would throw Ayla Guzzardo's name into the hat. I just feel she needs another year or two before fully taking over a program.
mes102
A very reliable person told me this may not be a done deal. The person in that blog may only be connecting the dots to past hires(Pfau as the women's soccer coach from Akron to Houston, Mack, etc). I agree with MES102 that the AD needs to be taking better care of Jodi. IMHO it took way too long for her contract to be extended as I think it was recently. They should be reworking that again after winning the MAC Tourney.
mes102
Good. From what I heard, she was offered the job. She turned it down. She's from Northeast Ohio(went to Mayfield HS)and coached at schools in the Northeast Ohio/Northwest Pennsylvania area. She may be at Akron for the long run. But the AD needs to do what he can to keep her here. Especially when the recruiting classes are arguably her best EVERY year. The intriguing part about this graduation class of Cassell, Young, Luburgh, Guyton, and Tecca. When they came to Akron(Tecca with Ruper actually), people thought it was a good class, but just solid. No one thought they would be this good. But they got better while they were at Akron. This incoming recruiting class, if they get better while they're at Akron, look out. skip-zip
I'll breathe a sigh of relief.....for now.Lets face it, throwing money around when it comes to the women's basketball program is not really an option for a school like Akron. Between Title IX requirements, and lack of attendance or TV revenue, the program is already a huge drain on the budget.

Throwing money around for a women's basketball program is not a viable option for about every school in the NCAA excluding say 4 or 5. mes102
Lets face it, throwing money around when it comes to the women's basketball program is not really an option for a school like Akron. I never said the AD should throw money around towards the women's basketball program. I'm talking about the things the fans don't see that the AD has to take care of with Coach Kest. For example, talking to Coach Kest directly when asked by Coach Kest, instead of sending an assistant AD to talk to her. Which that example I just mentioned is one of the reasons a certain coach decided to leave Akron. My statement was more about doing the things he didn't do for the coach that left so another coach doesn't leave.

Who knew?Thank you for that, Cap'n. At the risk of offending the hard helmeted, I can't help wondering how those 14 could be more of a drain than the 75 scholarships for another money-losing sport. I'm not (on this occasion) suggesting dropping any sports, but just wondering how one sport can have such redundancy compared to any other -- and no, I'm not referring to the men's futbol team, they only get 9.5 grants-in-aid. I enjoy the women's basketball team and the job Coach Kest has done, but give me a break on the football bashing. There is a reason football is king. Do we want to compare the importance of football to say...Women's Tennis, Baseball, or Rifle? There is most definitely a distinction of importance.I wonder why Maryland didn't cut football instead of those 13 other sports before joining the B1G? Maybe they're expecting that to happen regularly as a member of the B1G. http://www.umterps.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=208133544
