I'm Jealous of NIU

Lets do it then. If the we beat Marshall, ZipsNation should pull money together and put the ad in. The only problem is that the ABJ would probably forget to put it in, or find some other way to mess it up.

More Marshall fans would probably see the ad if it was in a Huntington newspaper.

I doubt more than a handful of them subscribe to the ABJ.

There's some history behind this. Last time I was in Chicago I saw big billboards around town billing Northwestern as "Chicago's Big Ten Team." Meanwhile the University of Illinois has the most alumni in the Chicago area. Even Indiana-based Notre Dame was thrown into the conversation. NIU started getting attention after they went to the Orange Bowl. There was a big debate in local sports media about who is Chicago's real college football team.

What's the message? We lost to an average PSU Team but we want OSU? How about we win before you guys get delusional....and not just Marshall. N Illinois has history of winning recently...we didnt even win our last game.

Let us know when we can do it, I'm in for $50 as well.

C'mon Cap'n...you don't need my opinion to be delusional about Akron's team you're clearly on your way all by yourself (I will admit you might actually just be ahead of the curve here too).

I was simply trying to be a little realistic. I was also asking a question about the ad...who are we calling out if we beat Marshal? Are we calling out Pitt, OSU, the MAC? It seems a bit cocky for a team that couldn't beat a very beatable Penn State team and has not had much recent success in football to call anyone out. Shouldn't we at least finish .500 one year before we get cocky? I understand N. Illinois calling out Illinois. They have the best track record recently of schools in Illinois. We don't have the best track record recently of the program within 15 miles of us....sucks to hear that doesn't it but we aren't too far removed from the worst coaching hire in possibly the history of college football and three putrid seasons. I see no reason to be a cocky is my point or to put out an ad telling someone they are next.

If you read my post, there was nothing cocky about it. In fact it contains a very realistic qualifier:

"Assuming that we won the prerequisite games."

Could you ever see anyone in Akron having the balls to do an "equivalent" to this?

Assuming, of course that we won the prerequisite games...

Reminds me of the old Cincinnati ads of a few years ago.

You are taking a fun thread completely out of context, and telling everyone what they obviously already know.

The question is: "If Akron won the prerequisite football games, wouldn't it be fun to see an add like NIU's run in a local paper?" Would any local alumni have the balls to run it, in Akron -- "The Heart of Buckeye Country"?

Was anyone else at the JAR when that "Zippy - Thriller" video ran, and Zippy introduced everyone to "Brutus Blackeye"? Everyone was clapping along to the video until... Zippy nailed Brutus in the face with the basketball. Then half the crowd sat in stunned silence, while the other half cheered. That 3-second snapshot spoke volumes about "Zips Fans."

I LOVED those Cincinnati radio ads about OSWho a few years ago. Excellent. Again, they serve as a great example of what we SHOULD be. Being in Cincinnati recently also confirmed this. I saw tons of shirts down there that said bUCeye State....with the UC being the Cincinnati logo. They couldn't care less about the Suckeyes, and we need to develop that attitude here. Cincinnati has done it, why not in Akron?

To answer your question, no, I don't see it happening here..but it should.

I do not think setting the sights a little smaller and targeting the conference is an issue. BG = reigning MAC champs and expected to be good for a while. That's what I mentioned the Sentinel (their local paper).

Checked their site out and couldn't find a quote. Awaiting a reply to my email.

Heck yes if the Zips ever accomplished what NIU has accomplished I'd kick in something to see an ad like that. Everyone here would. We all agree that they have to get there first before we start collecting money. With Coach Bowden there's at least a prayer now that was never there before. It's time to replace decades of pessimism with at least a sliver of cautious optimism.

Completely agree. I'm even willing to pitch in more than 50 if need be. But we gotta get there first of course.

We always gotta expect results first and foremost, but you've got to realize that in my short fandom of the Zips, there's been very little to celebrate when it comes to football. I know basketball and soccer have been good, but football is my personal favorite, and I've been so desperate for something to go our way for once. I'd like to see more interaction of the Alumni with the UA community, and it starts with having conversations like this.

Hell, we should consider it for the basketball team too, if they can reach that level too.
