Zips @ Ohio U 2-4-15

I wish I could share your optimism, I really do, but I just don't see us as a team that is built to blow anybody out. I will say that when one of our wings gets really hot we have a chance to defeat somebody soundly, it just hasn't happened enough. I think the spread is where it should be.

Maybe not on the road, but UA beat the hell out of WMU and BGSU at home.

The “Zips Win!” jinx is not nearly as strong in hoops as it is in football. That’s a plus :)

I’m with The Hip Zip from the standpoint that the 2014-2015 Zips are going to have to prove to me they can win COMFORTABLY on the road before I start to expect it, regardless of the opposition.

I think a key to the game will be the foul situation with Ndour and Pat. If Pat gets in early foul trouble, this game may quickly turn into one the Zips can only win by shooting a high percentage. That’s been a struggle lately, so I really hope Pat doesn’t get a 2nd foul early in the game.

If the past is December 23 then yes! Green Bean Willis went wild! http://www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/122314aaa.html

I see in that game that the Kitties established their inside game in the first half and then hit most of their 3s in the second half. For the game OU hit 70% of their 2s and 41.7% of their 3s. This season they're relying more on the inside game than previous editions. Sure, in any given game one of their guards could always go off from outside the arc, and the Zips have to guard against that. But in most games they're relying less on 3-point shooting than we're used to seeing in recent seasons, so stopping their inside game early should be the first priority.

I'll be interested in this matchup. From the little I've seen, I like Ndour's game. Not sure how the matchup will go, but I do know, of the multiple whistles blown on PF34, most of them will be turri-BULL. #wahref

From The Athens Messenger:

... Phillips, who coached against Akron two years ago when Treadwell and Zeke Marshall were both Zips, said he’s familiar with how Akron operates. Akron is essentially the same team it was before Treadwell’s dismissal, and that team was a preseason favorite in the East Division.

“Losing Tree has affected them, but they haven’t used it as a crutch or an excuse. I certainly have respect for that,” Phillips said. “They’ve gone out and battled every night.”

So, while the Zips have hit more 3-pointers this season (9.0 per game), it’s still going to come down to inside play Taylor said.

“It’s going to be a physical game. At the end of the day, the game is going to be won on the defensive side and who is going to rebound the ball,” he said. “It’s that simple. It’s like that every game we play them.” ...

The only thing that concerns me about this matchup is that, with Maurice, they are far more athletic than us in the paint. He probably won't have trouble getting around Big Dog, Pat, and Jake. If this means he has a big night, the perimeter guys could capitalize from it, and make it a 70 to 80 point game, which would be difficult for us to win on the road.

I see this as OUs only path to victory.

I've been wondering why Stevie Taylor as taken such a fall.?? I always liked him from the first time I saw him backing up DJ Cooper. I've watched a couple OU games where he didn't get many minutes at all. It appears from afar that he has maybe sulked under Saul Phillips and they simply have not functioned well together. I just don't know what is going on with him, this should have been his team. Agree that Ndour is a beast. He's fun to watch play and has a motor that just never stops. He's one of the three best "bigs " in the MAC East that I've seen and he'll play professionally somewhere.

Agree also with MD Zip that this rivalry seems to have slipped a bit. I loved it when the 'Cats were really tough and these two teams fought like Hell for 40 minutes. They hated us and we hated them. I sure hope we see a good old fashioned battle in front of a large and spirited crowd at the Convo. Many times I've taken the long trip down there and have seen the best of Zip teams come up empty. it was just about impossible to go down there and steal one. Now,not so much though road wins are gold in this conference and are hard earned. I take nothing for granted and expect a very close game that can go either way.

Maybe Jake gets peek at those O U jerseys and goes off again.????????

Akron 68

OU 65

Stevie began the season as the starting PG but terrible shot selection and bad execution got him benched. He and Bean both prefer to dribble down the court and chuck up a hero 3 without attempting to pass it into the post first, and when you're shooting 22% from 3 on the season like Stevie is those decisions are killer.

As for the rivalry slipping a bit I think that's just a perception thing for Zips fans because Jim Christian lost 5 out of the last 6, its been a while since you guys have felt the agony of defeat. But if you look at those 6 games individually everyone of them was a thriller. Hoping for another Convo Classic tonight. Good luck..

Dave, I'm willing to agree with you that the Bobbies are more dependent on their inside game this year -- however I'd use that fact as evidence for why they have a losing record! Their inside game is IMO less threatening than their jump shooting. They're too small to match up favorably with Akron -- or many other teams I the league, and should be using their guard play more. I would say with the addition of the new Taylor, they have one of the very best guard combinations in the MAC. But, good luck to coach Saul. He has three years to produce...blah. blah. blah! ;)
