Hilltopper Posted October 1, 2015 Report Posted October 1, 2015 This guy was our #1 target for this recruiting season. He was at the Pitt game for an official visit. He is 6'8" 270lbs. He is #21http://www.hudl.com/v/1u7cs Quote

akronzips71 Posted October 1, 2015 Report Posted October 1, 2015 Looks like a pretty good football player too, surprised he did not get some D1 FB offers.Very impressive video. Looks like the Second Coming of Tree, with a little Zeke mixed in.Now if he would only grow another three inches......... Quote

Dr Z Posted October 1, 2015 Report Posted October 1, 2015 Foot injury in December.Looks raw. Hope he is coachable. He will need to be a lot more active in the Mac. Quote
Dave in Green Posted October 2, 2015 Report Posted October 2, 2015 Michael is a classic under-the-radar late bloomer who was barely mentioned anywhere before his sophomore year in HS. The Zips coaching staff has become pretty good at spotting diamonds in the rough before others catch on. One of the few clues to his talent came when the Kansas City Star named him one of their 5 players to watch in Missouri high school boys basketball as a junior last season:Michael Hughes, Liberty North, juniorHughes burst onto the scene as a sophomore, providing a worthy complement to Brinkley Jolly in the post. With Jolly gone, Hughes is in line to shoulder more of the load down low for the Eagles. The rim-protector averaged 12.1 points and 8.7 rebounds per game last season. Quote

Hilltopper Posted October 2, 2015 Report Posted October 2, 2015 Is this per your acquaintances on the coaching staff? We lose Pat after this season and Big Dog the year after. It's pretty obvious we need at least one big man in this recruiting class. I would imagine we will have our sights set on another big guy for next years class. Quote
GoZips Posted October 3, 2015 Report Posted October 3, 2015 Is this per your acquaintances on the coaching staff?I can confirm that Hilltopper not only has good inside contact with the coaching staff,he also posts factual information. The coaches are not even allowed to comment onthe verbal. Micheal is an improved version of Tree. To say that the coaches are pleased with this commit is an under statement. Michealis a man both physically and maturity wise. He is one tough competitor and will benifitfrom college level coaching. The Zips have once again restocked with quality talent. Quote
Dave in Green Posted October 3, 2015 Report Posted October 3, 2015 Finally found a brief scouting report on Michael from a tournament:Michael Hughes 6’8″ (Pumas): Attends Liberty North. A robust 270-pounder who was tough to deal with in the post. Has a nice post up game and a excellent touch. Very active around the glass. One of the top inside players in the tournament, without a doubt. Can't get the current site link to work, but you can read the above in the Google cache for the site at this link. Quote

The Hip Zip Posted December 9, 2015 Report Posted December 9, 2015 Time will tell but I think we have a good one here. Quote
Blue & Gold Posted December 9, 2015 Report Posted December 9, 2015 (edited) He looked great. Wish he hadn't picked up that foul only 2 minutes into the game. He had to play a little soft for the rest of the first half. He's the best passer on the team. Very coordinated & absolutely huge. 6'9" 270. The basketball looks like a grapefruit in his hands. Beast of a rebounder & can get up & down the court just fine. Rim protector. He took two 3-point shots. Made one & the other rimmed out. Sweet & easy stroke from behind the arc, BUT OBVIOUSLY LOOKS RIGHT AT HOME DOWN LOW; we won't have any Kwan aggravation with Michael. His guards weren't very good at getting him the ball down low. I only noticed one nice pass to him down low, and it occurred with just over 2 minutes remaining in the game.I think he finished with 15 points & 10 rebounds, IIRC. i know it was a double-double. zippyfan34 Posted January 12, 2016 Report Posted January 12, 2016 (edited) Update on Michael http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/community/816-north/816-north-sports/article53322655.html.2. Liberty North senior Michael Hughes is a game-changing defenderAs good as Michael Hughes is offensively — and he might be one of the top low-post weapons in the area — he’s arguably even more valuable on the defensive end of the floor.Liberty North defeated Rockhurst 59-48 to win the Cardinal Division of the William Jewell Holiday Classic last week. Hughes had 23 points and 15 rebounds. But his shot-blocking presence on the defensive end of the floor prevented Rockhurst from even sniffing close-range looks. Instead, the Hawklets consistently settled for jumpers, while Hughes lurked in the paint. That’s no coincidence. Edited January 12, 2016 by zippyfan34 Quote
