Newman, McNeil or LaVonne?

Kish (confirmed) ............... As of yesterday's meetings, McNeil was a no show

Running low on H-back/TE's ............... Siebel is no longer on the team, Kish move to OLine leaves like 5 of 8 from 2015 roster (Williams, Cagle, Junk, Martin, Gauthney)........... With no confirmation yet regarding McNeil

A loyal Zip nation poster informs me that it was standing room only in the O-Lineman meeting room !!! With a handful of new faces...

What do you mean by this? Was it a recruiting day? Or was this just a meeting of all the OL on the Zips' roster?

"A handful of new faces..." Were these transfer students?

Currently on Roster:

  • Nathan Bischof - SVSM
  • Brock Boxenm- Beaver County, PA
  • Michael Buddenburg - Massillon
  • Stephen Erickson - Sherrodsville
  • Nick Fazio - Streetsboro
  • Mitchell Hlay - Richfield
  • DJ Jones - Ravenna
  • Travonte Junius - SVSM
  • Shawn Kirk - Alliance
  • Jerome Lane - Firestone
  • Deon' Tae Moore - Kenmore
  • Brian Reinke - Copley
  • Dylan Seibel - Uniontown
  • Christopher Spruill - Maple Heights
  • Zachary Sweat - Canton
  • Chuck Turfe - Canton
  • Brennan Williams - Firestone
  • Newman Williams - SVSM
  • Austin Wolf - Lebanon

This does not include seniors, transfers, kids from the Columbus, Cincinnati, or Cleveland areas. Clearly we can't get local kids.

I'm not sure if this is serious or sarcasm.

Of that list, Boxen is from Western Pa. That isn't local. If you are trying to say that is local, why not include Woodson, Guiser or the other WPa guys? I would agree that WPa, historically, has been Akron's best out of state area.

Turfe is from Canton ... Michigan, and a walk on. Lebanon (Wolfe) is outside of Cincinnati.

Of the local guys. All are walkons, outside of Ericksen, Hlay, Junius, Lane, Moore and Newman Williams.

Obviously, Bowden has been able to make some inroads to get 10 local starters off the school's first ever 8 win and bowl winning team. I'm just a bit perplexed that it hasn't translated to getting even more of the higher tier local kids to buy in.

Right now, there are probably 50 HS recruits from NEO committed to FBS schools. Not one is committed to Akron. That is mind boggling.

Granted, there are some local transfers who will take up scholarships (and I don't mind that approach, especially since the recent results have been good), but I thought TB would be able to a better job of being able to sell this program to local HS recruits this year. Right now, it appears it is the opposite since there are none, and he has been able to pull in some local kids who has other options in his first 3-4 classes.

TB has stated over and over that he consider W PA part of the local recruiting area. Monroeville (Woodson) is probably an hour or more east of where Boxen is from, which is very close to the OH border. Guiser is further east than Woodson. I picked what I considered to be a reason able distance.

I am not really sure what you are looking for. If Newman Williams us a walk-on, give me 10 more of his talent level and I wild be happy. I could care less if a kid is in scholarship or a walk-on. One poster wants Bowden to find more local diamonds in the rough the you want more local scholarship kids.

It takes more than 1 good year to improve recruiting and these kids started the recruiting process with a 5-7 team, not an 8-5 team. On top of that, it takes more than wins to attract kids. Kids look at the size of crowds we draw. Having the lowest attendance in college football in 2014 didn't help us there. TB is doing his best to win the local schools over and the articles posted at the end of the season indicate he's gained a lot of ground there. Prior to TB, there were no relationships with these schools.

I also think it's ridiculous to complain about something when we don't know who we have verbals from and who we don't. Using social media is spotty, at best, and these recruiting websites, overall, Do a fairly poor job tracking Group of 5 prospects

I have a student who is a sophomore being recruited by other MAC programs (he has talked to me because of all my Akron stuff, and I occasionally talk about football during football season). I asked him what he thought about Akron; beginning of the year he didn't care at all for it. At the end of the season he now has a "wait and see" approach towards Akron.

He's a pretty good player, but I think his view of Akron should answer that question.

Couple of points .......... I know that my son DIDN'T want to stay around the area . So maybe some of these kids want to get away from the area (no offense at all to the area) unless of course they get an OSU scholly

I did some rough math to look at the number of OHIO kids (not NEO, but the state, which has a lot of talent and recruiting competition):

From 2015 roster only:

Fresh and RS Fr - 14 of 35 from Ohio or 40%

Soph or RS Soph- 12 of 19 from Ohio or 61%

Jr or RS Junior - 10 of 23 from Ohio or 43%

Total Ohio players on 2015 roster (not seniors) - 36 of 77 or 47%

Again that is just Ohio, not PA or surrounding States.

Total Ohio Players on the 2010 Roster was 39 of 84 or 46%

So I would ask a couple of questions .........

1. Is this a good percentage from Ohio ? That's up to opinion I guess

2. Is the current in state talent on the current roster better than back in 2010 ?

I feel it's much easier to say Akron needs to get more high quality players from NEO than for them to actually do it. It is quite possibly the heaviest recruited area in the entire B1G and MAC. Not to mention you have national programs like Notre Dame and Alabama peaking their head in. Akron needs to get to the point that it becomes a more desirable destination than a Purdue or a Illinois, but playing in an empty stadium with the majority of their games being broadcasted on watchespn isn't going to cut it.

Larry Williams only job is to fill InfoCision. If anything else were remotely close in importance, we'd have kept Wistercill. Bowden has given him something to sell, so it's on him to get attendance moving in a positive direction.

Bowden took unarguably the worst football program in D-1 to an 8-5 record and a bowl win within 4 years. So we know the impossible can be accomplished.

I'd expect a good AD, with creativity and a plan, can get attendance to 15k+ average butts-in-seats within the next 4 years. That should be what is expected.

I feel those are fair expectations and would provide a huge boost to recruiting efforts. I like the way Akron football is trending and getting from where we were to where we hope to be takes time.

Next weekend is a big visit weekend (and the last before signing day)

Kato Nelson and his teammate WR Jahcour Pearson (who recently decommited from NIU)

Armond Weh Weh - JUCO running back

And I sure hope a whole lot more ...........

Kato and Jahcour would be a nice package together! I think the fact that they are making the official visit here on the last weekend before signing day is a good thing.

Weh Weh is starting to accumulate offers from other G5 teams. Looks like we are his only visit between now and signing day.
