GoZips
The 2016-17 schedule due out soon. Word is that is it is complete and ready for publication. Only one MEAC/SWAC team on Akron's home schedule. Coppin State comes to the JAR. Two excellent mid-majors are new to the home schedule; American University and Georgia Southern. . Purportedly two mid-majors come as part of the Savanna Tournament. However, I did read that Georgia Southern is one of those two schools. The team is in its ten practice schedule for the Bahamas trip. A lot of playing time will go to the red shirt Freshmen and the two Freshmen newbies. I believe that you are going to love "Big Mike" Hughes. At six-nine and ample girth he tends to dominate the low post. Big Mike is a player. Just one player, Aaron Jackson, is still recovering from off season surgery. Aaron is nearly finished with his rehab. Just as George gushed over Josh Williams growth spurt up to a solid six-two so too did Danny Utomi add at least two inches as Danny is now slightly taller and bulkier than Aaron Jackson. Josh and Danny are expected to provide the fire power to replace Reggie and Jake. Most of the players are spending extra time in the gym and the weight room. They look good. <Insert disclaimer here> and, Go Zips
wadszip
Let's not get carried away with calling American and Georgia Southern "excellent" mid-majors. American was 12-19 last year and ranked No. 302 in the KenPom rankings (below Bethune-Cookman). Georgia Southern (14-17) was a little better at 199, and at least it's a Sun Belt school. Hopefully, both will be improved this year.
ZachTheZip
Once again, absolutely no reason for casual fans to attend a home game until MAC season. But keep complaining about low fan support. Edited August 3, 2016 by ZachTheZip

zippy5
At some point I feel like I'm going to lose interest watching the same story each year. Hope not.
zippy5
I mean seriously. Beat up on Malone/Walsh/JCU Go to tourney - put up a decent game with a top 25 team, fizzle out in the last ten minutes. Beat up on cupcakes for 2 months. Win 10-12 MAC games.*** Maybe win on a Saturday in March and go to the dance If step #5 is a success, See step #2 for final step ***Strong possibility that a top scorer will be suspended/removed from team during this stretch Before anyone jumps on me, I realize this is a good problem to have. kreed5120
Honestly, the casual fan doesn't know the difference between a Valpo and American University. Any team that is a big enough name to draw in a meaningful number of additional ticket sales wouldn't agree to play at the JAR.

That's why we have to sacrifice some of these games and go on the road for some opportunities to knock off some teams that WOULD matter to the casual fan. That's the only solution.
clarkwgriswold
I sure hope Bethune-Cookman and Lipscomb are back. I can pay for my season tickets just by scalping my tickets for those two highlight games.

I agree the casual Akron fan doesn't know the difference between Valpo and American, but those "fans" wear Ohio State gear and don't come to games anyhow. To the real Akron fans, the ones that actually buy tickets, attend games, and fund the Program, they know Valpo would be an awesome opponent: 20+ wins, year-in-year-out. NCAA appearance 2 of the past 3 seasons, with the lone "miss" being an NIT appearance where they made it to the finals. I can't imagine how excited I'd be about Zips basketball if we could have a 3-year run like that one. I know...Valparaiso doesn't have a football team...blah blah blah... We could get a home-home with Valpo if we wanted it. So there must be another reason we don't play. Reviewing how Valpo's fared over the past 3 seasons with the Zips recent post-season resume...I can probably guess what it is.

wadszip
A Valpo-like team would be an awesome addition. Though, I wouldn't be upset at all if KD has them blacklisted after the hatchet job the Zips got out there in this game: http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/boxscores/2011-11-18-valparaiso.html I don't like to complain about officials, but this is the one game were I can't be convinced the fix wasn't in (I believe it was Horizon refs at Valpo). Looking at the box score still makes me want to puke. 31-14 foul differential; 38-7 foul shot discrepancy; Zeke fouled out in 11 minutes, Harney in 23, Tree with four fouls in 22 minutes ... while their two stiff big men who were hacking like crazy were called for 1 combined foul in 69 minutes between them. zippy5
That's the one. 4,000 with students on Holiday. I don't have to look up the rest of the OOC schedule to see how that compares. I had a lot of fun that night.
