I probably should have put this in the CMU thread, in retrospect. This is an awesome idea and we probably have Larry Williams and maybe Bernie to thank.

Larry's ties back to the Browns are extensive.  It goes beyond Bernie.  But, Mr. Kosar seemed to be having a great time mingling with fans out in the parking lot prior to the game.  It's a shame that he clearly shows the signs of an ex-player who got knocked around a bit.

I see they only have 354 followers on Twitter. I'm all for anything that gets a few more fans into the stands, but realistically how many extra people will this attract? How big is their following?

Edit: Also, what's the story behind Bernie taking an interest in Akron football? He's a Youngstown kid who went and played for the U. Obviously I like that he's taken an interest, but am just curious why all of a sudden?

Not that its a huge difference, but its 500 something followers actually. Even if it only brings a hundred then I think its a success. Its a chance to get serious football fans interested in a program that plays decent football and is close to home.

Also I am not sure if is something else that shows Bernie is "taking an interest"in the program, but I wouldn't call attending 1 game in which I am presuming he was invited by Larry Williams that. But if there is something I missed, then great!

Is there more to the organization than Twitter? And it makes a big difference if those backers have money. ?

I can't remember where, but I think Bernie's interest is tied to being teammates with Williams. I am sure the whole turn-around story helps, too.

Correct.  And Bernie has not been the only one who's been around here.

This connection between current Akron Football, and the memorable 80s era of the Cleveland Browns could really impact our support.  You never know.  But just like any publicity effort of this kind, you run with it and see what happens.  You have nothing to lose.

500 members probably equals at least 2,000 potential customers, assuming family and friends.

These people are football fans used to paying $100.00 for game tickets, big money for parking, sitting in nosebleed seats and watching their team get waxed every week.

At the Zips game they will be getting tickets at 1/10th the Browns' price, great seats, field access, a shirt, cheap parking with tailgating... and a chance to see "their" team actually win.

I hope it works out, and they have a great experience. If so, the dividends will only multiply in the future.

^This, you have nothing to lose at this point. What I would like to see(and I know it will never happen) is go directly after Browns Fans to go to Zips Games via Advertising...

This is unique enough it deserves it's own thread. Great idea. Bernie is very active on Twitter, I bet he would love to hear from Zip fans. We need to get him some Zips gear! Get him in the booth with French! Let him do some color commentary on anything Zips football related.

Apparently the game time is still TBD...

Television will dictate time. They have to let the Zips know at least 12 days prior to the game.

.

I believe that he was in the booth with the ESPN guys for a short time after he was inside the stadium, but I do not know if he ever went on the air with Frenchy.

Keep something in mind.  I know that some Cleveland sports fans idolize him, and I don't want to be mean, but the guy can barely speak anymore.  That might be why we don't see him on any Cleveland broadcasts anymore these days.  So, I only wonder how limited his use might be in some of the areas you suggest.  But I like your thinking.

He did halftime with Larry Williams and spoke about the Zips and Browns, no commentary during the game. While his speech isn't perfect, his football mind is still sharp. I love listening to him speak about football, he is a wealth of football knowledge. He still does a show on channel 19. He lost his commentary job when he told the truth about the Rams, and numbskull Fisher cried.

Getting rid of Bernie/Donovan calling the Browns games was the worst thing the Browns could do. Listening to Mike Patrick and Solomon Wilcots is unbearable. It almost seems like they do zero research before the games and just show up.

Dr. Z....thanks for the additional info.

I have to tell you.  In this broadcast you posted from last year, he sounds so much better than he sounded a couple of Saturdays ago.  I couldn't tell you why.  I'm certainly not knowledgeable about anything related to his issues other than what gets mentioned from time to time in the media.

I will be honest, he didn't sound that great on ESPN3. Maybe it was an anomaly.
