Zips vs. Marshall- 12/17/16

They play a pretty small front court. Their starting PF comes in at 6'5, but puts up pretty solid numbers 12.5 points 6.8 boards on 60% shooting. Kwan needs to exploit his size in the post. Something he failed to do against Gonzaga. Their starting C is 6'7 217lbs, but has missed the last 4 games due to an abdominal injury. No clue if he will be healthy by Saturday. The guy starting in his place comes in at 6'9 222, but has only played about 15 minutes each game accumulating at least 4 fouls in each. Nobody has the size to handle Big Dog 1 on 1.

Their 3 starting guards each average 31.8 minutes per game or more (Elmore, Loop, and Browning). Jon Elmore is the only player in D1 basketball averaging 23+ points and 7+ assists. 62 of 65 of Loop's shot attempts have come from 3 and he is shooting .484 from 3. Browning is their 2nd leading scorer and posts efficient numbers a cross the board (.495 FG%, .400 3P%, and .909 FT%).

Edit:Offensively we just need to keep doing what we've been doing and feed Big Dog. They will have no option but to bring the double. We should be able to bait them into fouls in the process. Defensively I'd have Robotham and Williams (when he's on the court) babysit their 3 point specialist and have Antino and Ivey guard their dynamic play making guards.

Greetings from WV. I'm bringing a group up for the game on the 17th. I've taken a cursory glance at tickets and all I'm seeing is upper level on line. Is it difficult getting tickets on lower level? I'm seeing the visitor's section is L. Any advice?

Thanks for any responses in advance and good luck.

Lower level is sold out to season ticket holders.

You may be able to get tickets through Marshall in that corner section behind your team bench (I am assuming that is the Section L you are referencing).  There are seats there for families and supporter of the visitors.  But for the most part, Hilltopper's information about the lower section being sold out to season ticket holders before the start of the season is correct.

If you can't get L level tickets don't worry.  The arena's not very big so there aren't many bad seats in the house.  However, if you want to save your backside from sitting on bleachers, make sure to purchase seats in the Upper Reserved section.  I believe they're only $5 more, IIRC.

The only really bad seats are the upper level seats at the track level where can't see the floor over the top railing of the glass partition.

If you are not high enough to see over that black line, you will get annoyed quickly.

Thank you very much guys. I'm bringing seven people up for the game and look forward to visiting.

A little info about our team. The coach is Dan D'antoni, the brother of NBA coach Mike D'antoni now at Houston. He is in his third season at Marshall. As you noted above this team is talented at the guard position, especially with Jon Elmore who is averaging top 10 numbers nationally for both scoring and assists. Jon isn't overly athletic but can hurt you both shooting and taking it to the basket. The weakness of this team is definitely in the paint. We return senior Ryan Taylor who is very athletic, but at 6'5" he struggles with foul trouble defending in the paint. Our problems down low has been exacerbated by the absence of our starting center, Thompson. He has been out for several games with a torn stomach muscle. Fortunately he is expected to return to the lineup against you guys Saturday. In his absence we started a 6'9" European (Penava) who has length and athleticism but is thin and lacks strength. He can run the floor and make an occasional three-pointer as well as finish pick and rolls but sometimes has trouble finishing underneath due to his lack of strength. He too struggles with foul trouble. We bring freshman guard Allison off the bench as well. One of last years top players, Burks is sitting out first semester due to academics and isn't expected back till the game after our game Saturday.

I think the  game comes down to differences in style. We run a very fast paced offense and put up a ton of shots. We never post up our bigs and their points usually comes from drives and pick and rolls. When we are on our game we can score some points. Unfortunately we are still a few players short underneath and defend poorly in the paint. Having Thompson back will definitely help. But I'm going to assume you guys will try to exploit that weakness and try to pound it down low early and put us in foul trouble. When we get in foul trouble we play very soft underneath.

You guys are a good team and we have had our struggles on the road this year, especially with our center being out. This probably gives you guys the edge and I suspect you will be favored in the game by 6-8 points. I look forward to coming up and thanks for the info.

For some reason, I'm a little worried about this one.  Hope I am wrong.  Our years old inability to stop penetration by quick guards has me worried.

It should be a little of a contrast of styles with Marshall pushing the ball and chucking up shots while the Zips run a more deliberate structured offense.

Wow, that was an entertaining game.  Marshall sure runs the floor and moves the ball.  If they have one or two even average big men, they could be really dangerous.  They will win a lot of games.

Zips did a nice job on Elmore.  Antino didn't do a lot offensively, but really worked hard on Elmore.  I really liked the surprise 2-3 zone the Zips threw in there unexpectedly.  It seemed to catch Marshall a little by surprise too.  We also handled the 1-2-2 press pretty well.

Nice rebound after the tough ones against Creighton and Gonzaga.
