Jerome Lane

The passes that have given Jerome the most difficulty seem to be the ones with high velocity that are thrown into his body. The balls that are thrown above him he actually snags with considerable skill and reasonable consistency. This is why I hope they start to throw more of the “jump ball” type of plays to him in the red zone, as opposed to trying Pratt almost exclusively in these situations.

Like that catch he made with two guys covering him at EMU, just throw it where only he can get to it and he can make the catch nearly 100% of the time.

Could Lane be the playmaker we've been looking for?

I think Jerome's ceiling is high. If I were Jerome, I would seek some kind of summer working out program with a professional. I think he is only scratching the surface. He has natural seperatlon ability. It would be a huge benefit for him to learn all the nuances of route running and professional catching techniques. I would contact these former MAC players.

If you don't appreciate Jerome, and you are at a game, take a few series and watch him run all his routes. Don't watch the ball, just watch him. Post back in this thread and let us know how many times he was covered.

I am very excited about the combination of Woodson and Lane. These guys will have 2 more years to develop together. We have really only begun to scratch the surface with them. I agree, with the idea of him getting some summer coaching to develop some of the skills Bowden has mentioned. I think it is fair to say that we have discovered the playmaker and hat's off to the coach's for having the vision for this. Let's hope his success at Akron leads the way for other local talent to come to Akron.

I am very encouraged by Lane's performance so far. He has played great for being thrown into an unfamiliar position. It took big balls to switch Jerome to offense because I think he had a pretty high ceiling on defense also.

Kudos to the staff for having the cojones.

Agreed. I'm more impressed by the unselfishness of Jerome willing to move from an area of strength, to an area of weakness. Like you state, he was having good success where he was. He must have a lot of confidence in his abilities. GREAT image BTW.

I wouldn't be surprised if the staff put him in on defense a couple of times this week to cause havoc like he did last year against BG. Like, on third and medium and long when you know they'll throw.

They've actually been quietly doing that (playing him at rush end on passing downs, 1 or 2 times per game) all year. I'd say he's due for an impact play on D.

Could be - if he is able to create a turnover on one of his rushes, that could be huge. Would like to see him and Marcus at LE and RE in these situations.

Indeed. Just have to avoid the stupid penalties on defense as a whole, and the D can ruffle the Falcons' feathers like no team has done yet this year.

I am actually curious to see if the staff is tempted to move him back to defense next year with all the talent we are losing on that side of the ball.

Possibly so, but I think every team that wants to be really good needs at least two guys like that. Is there a second one waiting in the wings?

Moving your biggest playmaker, especially when talent on offense is extremely limited, to the other side of the ball doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

We have a lot of talent coming, up, too. Brock Boxen is playing solidly and Brian Bell is going to be the real deal. Gilbert and Hauser have looked good and I saw John Rachal hit a guy so hard it knocked the ball loose after a catch last year on his first down of the season. It was one of the hardest hits I have seen from the Zips.

I would think it would be hard to switch him back after the early success we have had with him at WR. Excitement was a missing component from the Zips offense and he has helped bring it.

I know this is a Jerome Lane thread, but it would be remiss to mention that Imani Davis has really stepped up his game, too. He is consistently making solid catches and been outstanding after the catch. Really nice to see a piece of the puzzle that has been frustrating finally come together.

The two MAC players I suggested above did a piece that will air on Fox Sunday morning pregame. Interesting relationship.

This is so tough, because Jerome is such a talented athlete who can help us in several areas.

I'd like to see him play a little bit of receiver, and a little bit as a 3rd down pass rusher. I'll stick with that unless I see a point where he's dependable enough catching the ball in a number of pass route situations to where we must have him as an every-down receiver.

Last year, I felt like he had a super high ceiling as a pass rusher. Now I think he has the same potential as a receiver. I think the best thing for the coaching staff is to wait and see how this latest phase develops, and adjust his areas of contribution accordingly.

Lane has the tools to the the best WR in Akron history. Size + speed + hops, and elusive in the open field.

The fact that Pratt () , Davis and Wolf have also become viable receiving options will help keep the Jerome's coverage honest.

McNeil is also starting to see some balls thrown his way.

The 2015 Zips have an offense? Who'da thunk it?

Is this due to someone can get the ball to them?
